US-Israel war game rescheduled for autumn

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The top U.S. military officer says the U.S. and Israel will hold a major missile defense exercise in October.

The exercise Austere Challenge '12 was scheduled originally for April but was postponed amid growing talk of Israel preparing to attack Iran over its nuclear program. The odds of an Israeli attack in the near term appear to have lessened.

Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Army Gen. Martin Dempsey told reporters at the Pentagon on Friday that he is unfamiliar with exact details but that the postponed exercise is expected to take place in October.

The exercise is designed to test multiple Israeli and U.S. air defense systems against incoming missiles and rockets from places as far away as Iran.

Geoengineering efforts to mix oxygen into the Deep Baltic should be abandoned

Over the last decade, an average of 60,000 km2 of the Baltic Sea bottom has suffered from hypoxia without enough oxygen to support its normal ecosystem. Several large-scale geo-engineering interventions are currently on the table as proposed solutions to this problem. Researchers from Lund University are calling for geo-engineering efforts that mix oxygen into the Deep Baltic to be abandoned.

In the June 28 edition of Nature, researchers warn of the unforeseen effects of geo-engineering to relieve the lack of oxygen in bottom waters. "Such radical remediation measures promise impressive improvements in water quality on short time scales. They are popular and politically attractive, but they are also potentially dangerous," says Daniel Conley a researcher at Lund University.

Yet geo-engineering schemes are moving forwards. The Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management has announced a plan to build a demonstration wind-turbine-driven pump in the southern Baltic. This is a significant change in current policy to reduce nutrients to the Baltic Sea.

"We are on the pathway to a healthier marine ecosystem. We have scientific knowledge, an active monitoring and assessment program, political organizations in place such as HELCOM, and the countries have agreed upon targets to reduce nutrients in the Baltic Sea Action Plan. We need to let that process work," says Daniel Conley.

"Countries from around the Baltic Sea must immediately implement the national reductions for nutrients that have been agreed upon in the Baltic Sea Action Plan. If actions are postponed further, the situation in the Baltic Sea will continue to worsen," he added.

professional power equipment - 5 Features To Look For In ...

There are many types of spreaders available for commercial use. Some of these professional spreaders are similar to non-commercial consumer models. There are a handful of features that professional spreaders can contain that will give superior results when being used for landscaping on large estates. Not all spreaders have all of the features that are available. Understanding which of these options is important for a given job can be important when selecting a unit.

Overall Construction

Professional spreaders are similar to any type of professional power equipment. They must be durable and able to withstand hours of constant use over the course of many years. A good quality model will contain a strong frame and axle that will last for a very long time. The hopper should be made from very strong plastic. Some designs include a metal hopper that can help to distribute some types of seeds or fertilizers more easily.

Multiple Outlets

Having more than one port in the bottom of the hopper to distribute seeds can generate a more consistent broadcast of materials. Single-port units are prone to irregular spreading that can require the operator to make several narrow passes over the same area. Multiple ports on the unit can help to create more complete coverage as the grains fall downward and bounce off of the impeller blades in different locations.

Calibration Mechanisms

Calibrating professional spreaders usually involves the ability to adjust the distances between the ports and the impellers blades and sometimes the drop rate of the ports. This can be an important feature because it allows the operator to adjust the machine before every use so that normal wear and tear does not reduce the effectiveness of the unit.

Multiple Distribution Patterns

Landscapers who are using professional spreaders usually need to distribute several different types and sizes of materials. This can include large pesticide grains to small grass seeds. The best way to help ensure that all materials are distributed evenly and effectively is to look for a unit that has multiple distribution patterns. This is usually adjusted through a plate between the hopper port and the impeller blades. A range of different patterns will increase the usefulness of the spreader, regardless of what material is in the hopper.

Overspray Protection

Some landscapers might want to look for units that have small guards on the side. These guards are designed to stop granules from being tossed too far into the field. This type of overspray protection can create more accurate seeding patterns in narrow areas such as along a tree line or between garden fixtures.

Home Improvement | Trash to Backyard Treasure | Repurpose

Stop! Don?t throw those old shoes away. This blog can show you how to repurpose your worn-out shoes into a funky flower pot. Read on for this and more projects to spice things up in your backyard with items you once considered ?trash?.

Repurposed Flower Pot Holder

When we wear our shoes out, many of us throw out or donate our old kicks. As good as donating is, it is also good to consider different ways to repurpose your items. It?s possible your donated shoes could turn into someone else?s trash so why not get some extra use out them before you pitch them. Boots are perfect because they are larger and offer more surface area for soil and roots (Dad?s old work boots are ideal).

Other items you can consider for this project include an old beat-up chair. The pot can be easily installed in the seat of the chair or, if you don?t feel like using tools, just set the pot on top of the seat. For a personalized touch, paint the name of the plant on the backrest of the chair like ?Herbs? or ?Orchids?. You could also consider turning those old shutters into a below the window container for flowers. Repurpose old equipment, like a rusty wheelbarrow into a large outdoor planter. The possibilities are endless and all these items can be found discarded around the house or at one of your local junk yards.

Wagon Wheel Wind Chime

If you?re like me, you have a collection of old items. You may not be sure what to do with them, but they?re interesting pieces that you just know will one day find their place. If you have a collection like this then this project is the perfect place to find a home for those promising pieces. If you don?t have old items laying around, you can always visit one of your local junk yards or re-sale shop and pick up some items for free or cheap. Items used in this project could include, but are not limited to old keys, pendants, gears, and chimes.

Don?t let this list deter you from using your imagination. If it can make a sound while clanking against the other pieces and appears durable enough to withstand the clanking, give it a try! Attach your pieces to an old wagon wheel (think small) with wire or even fishing line could work. I prefer fishing line because it is durable and allows for the most movement. You can always double or triple up on the fishing line to make it stronger, but if your pieces seem a bit too heavy you may want to use wire.

Let your imagination do the work for you. If something is old and just sitting around, unused, or you?re going to throw it away ? stop and reconsider the possibilities. For more ideas like this, check out the rest of my Trash to Treasure series on this home improvement blog. Links provided below.

The Latest Real Estate Foreclosure News is In: Equifax - Only Two ...

Jay's notes:? In some markets ( Phoenix ), the best time to buy was last year, in some markets ( Atlanta ), the best time to buy will have been this year, but Equifax is confirming what we are seeing in the marketplace.? New foreclosures and good prices are quickly going away. The smart buyers are snapping things up now to lock in the best cash flows before prices move up. What investors buy now will be very shrewd investments and investors will be thanking themselves in a couple years for every property they picked up.

The number of home owners with severely delinquent mortgages ? 90-plus days past due or in foreclosure ? fell 37 percent in May compared to its peak in January 2010, according to a new report out by Equifax. Seventy percent of those delinquencies are loans opened between 2005 through 2007, Equifax notes in its May National Consumer Credit Trends Report.
"That severe mortgage delinquencies are trending downward is not surprising given generally improving economic conditions," says Amy Crew Cutts, Equifax chief economist.?"What is surprising is that even with the foreclosure moratoriums and the slow resolution of foreclosure backlogs, the downward trend has been a steady, consistent drumbeat of recovery. If this pace continues, we expect the volume of severely delinquent mortgage balances to return to mid-2007 levels by the end of 2014."
According to the report, severely delinquent non-agency loans have seen the largest drops. Non-agency severely delinquent loans fell 45 percent in May to $320 million compared to its peak in January 2010 of $580 million. Meanwhile, agency-sourced mortgages ? those that are backed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the Federal Housing Administration, and Veterans Administration ? declined 9 percent in May to $130 billion compared to its peak in January 2010 of $142 billion.
The report also showed that mortgage write-offs have dropped 28 percent in May from their peak in 2010. Also, home mortgage balances have fallen 12.5 percent to $8.6 trillion compared to its record-setting $9.8 trillion reached in October 2008.

Jelly Bean home screen revealed, automatically accomodates your apps and widgets

It's a pain manually moving apps and widgets on Android screens, ain't it? Well, at Google I/O 2012, the folks in Mountain View have just given us some Jelly Bean salve to soothe that irritation. The latest Android OS automatically arranges onscreen icons around any new widgets or apps you choose to insert. Not only that, but you can also remove any unwanted apps and widgets with a simple swipe up and off the home screen to delete them. A welcome Android addition, to be sure, but it begs the question, when will us non-Nexus owners get to enjoy it?

Link between brain insulin resistance, neuronal stress in worsening Alzheimer's disease

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Rhode Island Hospital researcher Suzanne de la Monte, M.D., has found a link between brain insulin resistance (diabetes) and two other key mediators of neuronal injury that help Alzheimer's disease (AD) to propagate. The research found that once AD is established, therapeutic efforts must also work to reduce toxin production in the brain.

The study, "Dysfunctional Pro-Ceramide, ER Stress, and Insulin/IGF Signaling Networks with Progression of Alzheimer's Disease", is published in the June 22, 2012, supplement of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common degenerative dementias, and more than 115 million new cases are projected worldwide in the next 40 years. There is clinical and experimental evidence that treatment with insulin or insulin sensitizer agents can enhance cognitive function and in some circumstances help slow the rate of cognitive decline in AD. Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases destroy the brain until the patients finally succumb. In order to effectively halt the process of neurodegeneration, the forces that advance and perpetuate the disease, particularly with regard to the progressive worsening of brain insulin/IGF resistance, must be understood.

"Brain insulin resistance (diabetes) is very much like regular diabetes," de la Monte said. "Since the underlying problems continue to be just about the same, we believe that the development of new therapies would be applicable for all types of diabetes, including Alzheimer's disease, which we refer to as Type III diabetes."

She continued, "This study points out that once AD is established, therapeutic efforts should target several different pathways -- not just one. The reason is that a positive feedback loop gets going, making AD progress. We have to break the vicious cycle. Restoring insulin responsiveness and insulin depletion will help, but we need to reduce brain stress and repair the metabolic problems that cause the brain to produce toxins."

Ultimately, these findings will help to expand ways to both detect and treat AD.

Growing evidence supports the concept that AD is fundamentally a metabolic syndrome that leads to abnormalities linked to brain insulin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) resistance. In AD, brain insulin and IGF resistance and deficiencies begin early and worsen with severity of the disease. The rationale behind the progression of the disease is that insulin-resistance dysregulates lipid metabolism and promotes ceramide accumulation, thereby increasing inflammation and lipid metabolism, causing toxic ceramides to accumulate in the brain. The end result is increased stress that threatens the survival and function of neurons in the brain.

The present study was designed to gain a better understanding of how brain insulin resistance becomes progressive and contributes to the neurodegeneration in AD, focusing on the roles of ceramides and stress. The researchers studied the same brain samples used previously to demonstrate progressive impairments in brain insulin/IGF signaling with increasing severity of AD.

The National Institutes of Health funded the study (grant #R01 AA11431, AA12908, AA16126). De la Monte's principal affiliation is Rhode Island Hospital, a member hospital of the Lifespan health system in Rhode Island. She also has an academic appointment at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Their research is fully supported by Rhode Island Hospital and the Lifespan health system.

The Aphorics

I am looking for a descriptive player to play the male counter-part in a roleplay
I would really like to try my hand in. The concept is this: Two assassins in the
modern/fururistic age who work for separate rivalling factions that compete
for the dominacy for the ultimate 'order.' These bounty-hunter organizations
train and send out their best killers to take out corporate and political targets.
The setting is quite modern, set about two-hundred years in the future.

The Aphorics

The world has changed , despite little advancement in technology. The great countries are no longer controlled by the government, they failed about
seventy years ago after WWII. Instead, the world is stabilized by massive corporations and companies that dictate everything; military, health-care, etc.
They are referred to as Aphorics. Seventy-five perfect of the world is under control of Aphorics. Those who claim themselves independent nations and
still practice democracy or any other form of government are viewed as anti-aphorism countries. They are condemned as traitors and rebels and are at
constant war with Aphoric power.

There are eleven Aphoric entities in the world, each who operate their headquarters in one region in the world and control other branching companies
across the globe. These eleven Aphorics rule the world in a secret council of eleven individuals. Outwardly, and towards each-other, they are a unified power.
The entities are as followed:

Saikou Engineering. [Technology, Japan.]
The E.B.K (En Bekymmer Kare). [Healthcare, Switzerland.]
GPCOR (Global Power Corporation) Utilities. [Electricity & Water, Canada.]
Legion. [Military, Israel.]
LUNAR [Space Exploration, Unified Sates (formerly U.S.A)]
T.W.P.O (The World Preservation Order) [Environment & Waste, France.]
Gaia [Agriculture & Exports, Brazil]
The R.R.R (Revolution Research Russia) [Scientific Research, Russia.]
Dogma [Public Education, Germany.]
Aid [Global Social Services, U.K]

GOMM [Global Moderation of Entertainment and Media, China.]

These entities control all other lesser corporations. For instance, Saikou Engineering controls all the technology, production, trade, distribution, and
profit of any other business that deal with (for example) car manufacturers, cell-phone companies, and computer-software. They also deal with the more
extraordinary, such as robotics. The E.B.K controls all the hospitals, pharmacies, global aids, and research. The Leigon is the world's military force, comprised
for the former world's top forces. LUNAR controls anything to do outside the globe, and they have an operating base on the moon. T.W.P.O controls the
state of the environment and the thousands of Waste Management Centres spread out through the world. GPCOR controls any and all forms of power, and
the companies that provide it to the citizens of nations; they use only the most eco-friendly methods. Gaia controls any and everything to do with the production,
and trade of food & livestock, restaurants and food retailers, etc.The R.R.R controls many things: universal Scientology of any kind. The Dogma controls
all schools, colleges, universities, and what people are allowed to be subjected to through education. AIDis the world's global social services and protects what
it can for human rights and safety. GOMM controls all and any form of entertainment, television, music, books, media, etc.

The Nocrosis

The Aphorics are constantly conflicting with each-other and CONSTANTLY competing to to get their way, in every aspect, but they all rely on eachother to exist,
therefore the termination of any is never a valid comprise. Instead, they rely on organizations that are not affiliated with any power, but are permitted to exist.
These organizations train elite agents to perform espionage & assassinations -they are known as the Nocrosis, and there are hundreds of them spread out across
the world.

All Nocrosis powers are secretive and highly elusive, that is why corporations use them. Their work is generally untraceable and cannot be linked to an individual
or employer. For example, if a lesser company working under the R.R.R happened upon a new drug they desired to sell to the E.B.K, and the E.B.K desired the
potential profit of the drug, but the drug's production conflicted with AID's ideals, a company working for the R.R.R need only hire a Nocrosis to terminate the
opposing factor.
Only conflicts on a tremendously large scale ever catch the attention of the Council, however, therefore small scale assassinations never
damage an actual entity as a whole. Rarely. Necrosis deal with other things, as well, such as anti-Aphoric rebels and their politicians, and gang-leaders, etc.

There are two main Nocrosis organizations, Quietus, Oblivion. They are rivalling assassin orders that compete for the favour and profit of employers
across the globe. My character would be from Quietus, and your's from Oblivion. You will be given free reign and on the creation, origins, and operations
of your Order. If you have read this far, thank you.

The Society

Society has changed DRASTICALLY and many new laws have been implemented. For instance, to control the threat of over-population, only married couples are
permitted to copulate and produce -one- child all their life. Offenders are prisoned if convicted. Secondary children are taken by a force known as 'The Requisition.'
The Requisition take multi-offspring and sell them to the military or a Nocrosis; it acts as a strict orphange, school, and training-camp until children come to the
age of 12 for distribution. Agents of a Nocrosis are only ever children taken and raised by The Requisition.

People are once again separated by class. There are four: Elites, Delegates, Artisans, and Vassals. Elites are owners, partners or executives (and their families) of
companies who work underneath an Aphoric. Delegates are those (and their families) who work for Elites or run small businesses that are allied with corporations.
People are not allowed to own private businesses. Artisans are the workers and the backbone of society. Vassals are the poorest of the poor or people unable
to work. Those who can work are taken by the Requisition and sold to Elites as cooks, maids, etc. Homelessness and poverty only exists in anti-aphorism countries.
The Aphorics also view handicaps and impairments as a dangerous threat to the longevity of the human race: if they are born as Elites or Delegates, they are funded
by the E.B.K to be rid of their afflictions. Artisans must pay to have their children checked as 'sound,' and if not, pay to fix their problems, or have them taken away
by the Requisition. Vassals must receive permission by AID to copulate; if they produce weak offspring, the children are taken by the Requisition. In most
circumstances, they are destroyed.

Society has become VERY eco-friendly. Committing any atrocities against nature (such as littering) is a grave offence and punishable by the Requisition. All cities and
towns function under a circular waste-economy and closed-loop concept that revolves around recycling and re-using. Education is available to ALL social Classes, but t
hey are separated by class. There are many other factions as well, such as mafia and gangs that hold the fa?ade of allies of the Aphorics, but secretly deal out drugs,
alcohol, pornography, prostitutes, bars, strip-clubs, etc ( all of which are illegal unless registered under AID). There are also black markets and underground rebel groups
that live in Aphoric nations.

The Requisition

All societies and corporations need a strong and formal law system. The Requisition is a separate and independent force that enforcers all and ever law underneath the
rule of the Aphorics. They oversee taxation, crime, and control a new system of laws and rights. Every Elite, Delegate, and Artisan is obligated to follow their laws, and
they control the lives of Vassals. Depending on social status, a citizen is eligible for levels of 'Service,' which include their health-care, protection, employment, etc. They
pay a certain amount of their wages and heavy tax depending on what package of 'Services' they desire. Vassals are not eligible for this. The Requisition moderates and
controls public behaviour through secret police forces. Magistres appointed by Aphorics speak on behalf of their authority in each city.

Our Story

By now, you should have a clear idea of what sort of world we live in. It is a controlled in every aspect, but we assassins of a Nocrosis - free from law and free from the
Aphroics. We follow a different order, and that is the order of our families. The plot will be centered around two assassins (a man and a woman) who will be ordered
to kill each-other. They are the top killers of Oblivion and Quietus, and can no longer compete. However, the twist is, they know each-other in their alter-life: the life
they pose in society when they aren't on the job. Overtime, they may even be hunted by their own people...
Note: This roleplay will contain adult-content: sexual themes, drugs, language & heavy violence.

Now, there was a LOT to read in there, and probably a bit of information you are still
iffy on. I am here to answer any questions and queries. I am looking for someone who
can post a happy medium of 500-800 words and play the male assassin. Thank you for
reading my idea...I look forward to playing with you!

Differences Between Traditional and Crossover SUVs - ECONTENTZ

With so many SUVs on the market today, it?s easy to get confused about the differences between traditional SUVs and crossover SUVs. What exactly are the differences, and what do they mean to consumers?

Construction technology

Traditional SUVs use body-on-frame technology, meaning the body and frame are built separately. The frame, usually made of steel and borrowed from a truck?s design, supports the powertrain. The body consists of everything else, the parts that we can see. This design provides more protection in collisions than crossover SUVs. And the truck frame causes the vehicle to handle like a truck, which may be challenging for some drivers.

Crossover SUVs follow a unibody design: the vehicle is built with a car platform, which is lighter than a truck frame. One metal frame supports both the body and the powertrain. This creates a more unified object for the driver to control; the driver feels that the car is an extension of himself, and handling is more agile and responsive. However, because everything is tied together so closely, damage tends to be more severe in collisions.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a traditional SUV is classified as a truck and a crossover SUV is glorified, tall station wagon. Marketers felt the term ?crossover? would be more appealing than ?station wagon? ? and boy, were they right.

Power

Traditional SUVs generally offer four-wheel drive, have powerful engines with six or eight cylinders, and can tow heavier loads. These characteristics are great for driving off-road but not-so-great for fuel economy.

Crossover SUVs are either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, which is not nearly as rugged as four-wheel drive. Generally, only four- or six-cylinder engines are available. Towing capacity is limited, but fuel economy is higher thanks to the lighter frame.

Repairs

Traditional SUVs are often less expensive to repair because having a separate body and frame means that a damaged part can be removed and replaced with relative ease.

Crossover SUVs are more costly to repair because the body and platform are one physical structure. Damages to this system require cutting the car-based frame and welding it back together again.

Practicality

Traditional SUVs were developed as a more spacious and stylish version of trucks while retaining power and ruggedness.

Crossover SUVs were born of a desire to blend the versatility of traditional SUVs with the refined driving experience and higher fuel efficiency of cars. This goal has been achieved admirably, at the price of power and durability compared to traditional SUVs.

Luxury and Amenities

The truck-based traditional SUV tends to have more utilitarian design and features. The truck frame rides higher off the ground, so running boards may be provided to help passengers reach the cabin.

Crossover SUVs generally offer more luxuries and elegance.

Despite these fundamental differences between traditional SUVs and crossover SUVs, technology has advanced to the point where many consumers can no longer distinguish between the two without examining specifications. The automotive press generally recommends that drivers who tow heavy loads or who drive off-road or in inclement weather would prefer a traditional SUV, while consumers who drive primarily in urban areas will appreciate the handling and fuel economy of a crossover SUV.

Differences Between Traditional and Crossover SUVs

Traditional and Crossover SUVs are among the available options when it comes to 7-passenger vehicles. Understanding the differences between them can help consumers make a more informed decision when looking to buy their next big family car.

Who was my audience, who would actually buy information over the internet?

?

Sure, it?s easy to find niches on the net.

?

If you can somehow zero in on people who will do anything to, for example, cure there acne, who wish to stop their pain ? be it physical or emotional, then you can sure sell to them!

?

This may sound a little heartless but really, you?re just filling a need and it?s your duty to cash in on it.

?

Once you?ve got your audience you have to solve their problem. And here we come to one of the great secrets of Internet Marketing. You can repackage free information and sell it.

?

The truth is that people are lazy and they will generally rather pay for information and know that it will answer all of their queries in one place, rather than hunt around for the info themselves. Even if their own research would save them money.

?

Obviously there is a lot of fine tuning to be done to that formula ? but very basically that is how to get people to buy.?

?

So, with a market hungry for your product, an informative product and a killer sales letter ? your new career awaits.

Imagine what would happen with Microsoft if Bill Gates would have quite two months after he started.?

The fact is most people can make a lot of money on the Internet if they just do not give up.?

All I knew was that there had to be a lot of money in the Internet as millions of people search it everyday.

That is really what it is all about, finding a way to make a few dollars and duplicating it as many times as possible.?

If it takes you 6 months or longer to start making a little money then that is still a little money that you would not have been making otherwise.

Gazans celebrate Brotherhood victory in Egypt

(AP) ? The Gaza Strip erupted in celebratory gunfire on Sunday with news that the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate won the presidency in neighboring Egypt, but one person was killed.

Tens of thousands of joyous Palestinians took to the streets across the territory after Egypt announced that Mohammed Morsi won last weekend's runoff election, the first time an Islamist has won that nation's highest office.

Gunmen fired automatic weapons in the air, while mosque loudspeakers rang with prayer. Some revelers handed out candy on street corners. Others waved Egyptian flags and blasted the country's national anthem from car speakers.

A Gaza health official said that one person was killed and six others wounded by celebratory gunfire.

Gaza is ruled by the militant Islamic Hamas, a local offshoot of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt's ousted president, Hosni Mubarak, collaborated with Israel in a blockade of Gaza they said was necessary to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas.

Now Gaza residents say they are optimistic that the new Egyptian leader will improve relations with the impoverished Palestinian territory.

"Today is new era for us in Gaza. The days of suffering due to the Egyptian authorities are over," said Rawhi Talab, 51, a food store owner. "It's a day of joy ... I voice my hope that Egypt will work to improve our life here," he said.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh phoned Morsi to congratulate him on becoming Egypt's first Islamist president. "This is a victory for all Arabs and Muslims, and this is God's promise to his believers," the Hamas leader said to the newly elected president.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum and other Hamas leaders followed developments closely on TV and went ecstatic when the announcement came that the Brotherhood won. "This is a victory for Egypt and the revolution and the Arab people," Barhoum said.

Gaza resident Alam Mansour handed out candy to revelers. "Today is a festival for Gaza," the 25-year-old engineering student said. "I am sure that the president of Egypt will lead the Islamic nation to great prosperity, and he will help us here in Gaza," he said.

Hamas plans a rally Sunday evening in support of Morsi.

Gaza has a 15-kilometer (9-mile) border with Egypt's Sinai desert and one official border crossing between the two.

Turkey says Syria downed jet in international airspace

Turkey on Sunday accused Syria of shooting down one of its warplanes in international airspace, as a watchdog said the Damascus regime suffered new setbacks and violence reached new heights.

"According to our conclusions, our plane was shot down in international airspace, 13 nautical miles from Syria," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told TRT television.

Syria has said it downed the F-4 phantom jet on Friday after it violated its airspace, and on Saturday Turkey acknowledged the plane may have done so in comments seen as a bid to cool tensions between the former allies.

Meanwhile, at least 20 people were killed, including 16 troops, in clashes with rebel fighters in Syria on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

"The clashes happened almost simultaneously at dawn," in the northern province of Aleppo bordering Turkey, the Observatory's Rami Abdel Rahman of told AFP.

The fighting took place in the town of Dara Aza, and at military checkpoints near the town of Al-Atarib and the village of Kafr Halab, the Britain-based watchdog said.

It reported that following an attack on an artillery battalion, a number of soldiers defected, taking with them a large quantity of weapons.

And, in another setback for the embattled regime of President Bashar al-Assad, rebels captured 11 government soldiers in the central province of Damascus, it added.

"This is one of the bloodiest weeks in the conflict," Abdel Rahman said.

According to the Observatory's figures, 94 people were killed in Syria on Monday, 62 on Tuesday, 88 on Wednesday, 168 on Thursday, 116 on Friday and 116 on Saturday.

"It's like we are in a war," Abdel Rahman said. "Sometimes when two countries are at war, not even 20 people are killed a day. But now in Syria it has become normal to have 100 killed each day."

The mounting death toll was a result of the international community's inability to agree on a way to resolve the crisis, he said.

"The UN observers have suspended their mission and this is a very bad decision. They are just staying in Syria and not going out to observe," said Abdel Rahman.

"Either go out and observe properly or leave," he said, his frustration palpable.

Sunday's developments come after a bad week for the Assad regime.

On Thursday, a Syrian pilot was granted asylum in neighbouring Jordan after flying his MiG-25 fighter across the border.

Meanwhile, Iran, Assad's staunchest ally, called on Damascus and Ankara to show restraint after the shooting down of the Turkish warplane by Syria.

Tehran "asks both sides to show calm and restraint, and hopes that with tact and tolerance and dialogue this issue will be evaluated and through a peaceful resolution, tranquillity and stability will be preserved in the region," Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying.

He made the appeal in a telephone conversation late Saturday with Davutoglu.

Anti-aircraft batteries hit the jet as it flew low and fast about a kilometre (less than a mile) from the coast over Syrian territorial waters, a Syrian military spokesman said, adding it was unidentified at the time.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had expressed his "deep concern" over the incident in a telephone conversation with Davutoglu, a spokesman said.

NATO member Turkey acknowledged one of its warplanes may have violated Syrian airspace, but its muted response has been seen as a bid to take the tension out of the latest rift between the former allies.

Turkey-Syria relations have already been strained by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's outspoken condemnation of the Assad's regime's bloody crackdown, which rights activists say has killed more than 15,000 people since March 2011.

Meanwhile, a Russian ship that tried to deliver attack helicopters to Syria entered the northern port of Murmansk on Sunday after being forced to turn back when news of its mission was leaked.

An unnamed Russian diplomatic source said the ship would soon try again to make the highly controversial delivery under the Russian flag.

The switch appears to be an attempt to avoid security inspections that come when sailing under the flag of a third country.

Russia says the Soviet-era Mi-25 helicopters are being returned to Syria after undergoing repairs under a contract that could not be breached.

The Alaed was forced to turn back after its mission was initially mentioned by the US State Department and then reported in the British press.

Those reports prompted the ship's British insurer to withdraw coverage, effectively barring it from entering any other ports on its journey.

(AP) ? A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles over the weekend, prompting the evacuation of a popular vacation town and the closure of nearby highways Sunday.

At least 11,000 residents of the town of Manitou Springs and nearby communities of Cascade, Chipita Park and Green Mountain Falls were ordered to leave Saturday or early Sunday. The fire quickly grew to more than 2,000 acres amid tinder dry conditions, gusty winds and temperatures that reached into the 90s.

Officials didn't immediately have a count on those evacuated from campgrounds, inns, rental cabins and other vacation properties that were emptied, but an evacuation center set up at a high school housed mostly tourists.

They included Mark Stein of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and 12-year-old son, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 100 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

The fire also prompted evacuations for the west side of Colorado Springs and in the towns of Cascade and Ute Pass, but no structures have been destroyed and no buildings were under immediate threat.

The Garden of the Gods park, which has dramatic red rock formations, was also closed. Pikes Peak, the most-visited high-altitude peak in the nation that inspired the song "America The Beautiful," was completely obscured by gray smoke.

Officials closed traffic into Manitou Springs, a vacation town at the base of Pikes Peak, and shut down the Pikes Peak Highway, which goes to the top of the mountain.

Hundreds of other residents were under voluntary evacuation orders and were packing up, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported Saturday.

About 350 firefighters were dispatched to the blaze, with more in the way, said Rob Deyerberg of the Fairmount Fire Protection District. But the fire was still zero percent contained. A plume of smoke from the foothills near Pikes Peak thickened and turned from light gray to brown.

Conditions remained dry and windy Sunday, and the National Weather Service said temperatures were forecast to be close to 100 degrees throughout much of the state.

Gov. John Hickenlooper said two C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would assist fighting the fire on Monday. With eight separate wildfire burning across Colorado, Hickenlooper said half the nation's firefighting resources were in the state but that it will take time to put out the blazes.

"People recognize this going to take a big push," Hickenlooper said.

Colorado and other parts of the Southwest have become a tinderbox for wildfires as the region faces extremely dry or prolonged drought conditions. At least seven were burning across the state, where officials have been challenged by one of the most severe fire seasons in recent memory.

The weather also helped fuel another blaze that sparked Saturday and destroyed 21 structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. Investigators were determining whether it started in a cabin or as a wildfire before moving toward the homes, according to the Denver Post.

"Even though we lost 21 (structures), which is a huge tragedy, we saved many homes because of firefighters' efforts," Estes Park Fire Chief Scott Dorman told evacuees.

A separate fire continued burning near Fort Collins, scorching more than 118 square miles and destroying at least 191 homes.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico and California.

? In Utah, about 2,300 residents were allowed to return to their homes Saturday after officials determined a wildfire no longer posed a threat to homes near Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain. Officials believe that fire was started Thursday by target shooters. A second major fire has burned 16,500-acres of high desert near the central Utah town of Delta.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Ventura County fire officials said the fire has blackened at least 400 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained after heavy rain helped crews Friday. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained. It has burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.
