Dhoni blames rain for spinners? poor performance ? Cricket News Update

Following the dismal performance of the Indian spinners against Australia, which culminated in a humiliating 9-wicket defeat for the Men in Blue in their first ICC World Twenty20 Super Eights match, skipper MS Dhoni defended his decision to play three specialist spinners, claiming the rain had severely hampered the effectiveness of his spin bowlers against the Aussie batsmen.

Despite initially having been hesitant to use five specialist bowlers which would lead to a depleted batting line-up, Dhoni opted for the risky combination in the team?s final group stage match against England ? a dead rubber, with both teams already having qualified for the Super Eights.

The combination of three specialist bowlers did wonders against the Poms, who were forced to concede a massive 90-run defeat, with the spin duo of Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla proving particularly deadly.

The Men in Blue opted for a similar line-up in their first Super Eights match, played against Australia at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 28 ? however, in the damp slippery conditions, the combination backfired, earning the skipper a fair amount of flak.

?We played with five bowlers in the last match,? Dhoni said, pointing out that the combination had won the team the match against England. ?To say that the bowlers didn't bowl well based on this one match would be wrong because we need to take into consideration the conditions ... It rained towards the end of our innings.

?When the ball gets wet there is not much there for the spinners ... there was no real grip for them and that was the main reason we were not able to put pressure on the Australians.?

Dhoni rested veteran batsman Virender Sehwag in order to play Harbhajan Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin and Piyush Chawla, but the decision proved costly. Not only did the batting order fail to rack up a substantial total, the specialist spinners were unable to claim any wickets, and the trio gave away a collective 66 runs in just 6.5 overs.

Commenting on the batting performance which had preceded the bowling, Dhoni revealed that owing to the early wickets which had put pressure on the team, they had decided a score close to 145 would be sufficient ? however, the team had obviously not banked on the rain, which would later render their bowling attack impotent.

?We had a score of 145-150 in mind but we hadn't thought ... that it would rain like this,? he said.

Canada aware of two cyber attacks, won't say if China involved

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada said on Friday it was aware of an attempt by hackers to target a domestic energy company, the second time in 24 hours Ottawa had acknowledged a cyber security attack against a Canadian firm.

In both cases the Canadian government declined to comment on reports which suggested a Chinese connection.

The news comes at an awkward time for Canada's Conservative government, which is deciding whether to approve a landmark $15.1 billion bid by China's CNOOC Ltd to take over Canadian oil producer Nexen Inc.

Some Conservative legislators are wary of the proposed CNOOC takeover, in part because of what they say are China's unfair business practices.

Ottawa revealed the second case after being asked about a security report from computer manufacturer Dell Inc, which said it had tracked hackers who targeted a number of firms around the world, including an unnamed energy company in Canada. Dell said on its website that the hackers had used a Chinese service provider based in Beijing Province.

"The Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre is aware of this incident," said Jean-Paul Duval, a spokesman for Canada's public safety ministry. Dell did not name the firm and Duval declined to comment further.

Less than 24 hours earlier Duval said Canada knew hackers had breached security at a domestic manufacturer of software used by big energy companies.

Calgary-based Telvent Canada Ltd, which is owned by France's Schneider Electric SA, warned customers about the attack, which hit operations in the United States, Canada and Spain, the cyber security news site KrebsOnSecurity.com reported on Wednesday. It cited experts who said digital fingerprints left during the attack pointed to Chinese hackers.

China is often cited as a suspect in various hacking attacks on companies in the United States and other nations. Beijing dismisses allegations it is involved.

The U.S. Cyber Command's top intelligence officer accused China on Thursday of persistent efforts to pierce Pentagon computer networks.

Candice Bergen, an aide to Canadian Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, did not directly address the Telvent incident when asked about it in Parliament.

The opposition New Democratic Party said the Conservatives needed to pay more attention to security concerns when looking at foreign takeover bids.

"Cyber security is something we have to pay attention to and that ... includes how deals are set up and trade deals are set up and acquisitions are made," said legislator Paul Dewar, the party's foreign affairs spokesman.

Although Industry Minister Christian Paradis is responsible for deciding whether the CNOOC bid should be approved, independent Conservative legislator Peter Goldring says a parliamentary committee ought to examine it.

"One of the main priorities of this committee will be to determine whether a foreign state-owned enterprise is an acceptable bidder ... for taking over a Canadian corporation," he said in a statement.

If a committee were set up it could delay the government's timetable for a ruling on the CNOOC deal. Paradis is expected to announce that decision by Nov 12.

An organization that regulates U.S. electric utilities is looking into the breach at Telvent Canada Ltd, which makes software that energy companies use to manage production and distribution of electricity. Telvent acknowledged a breach had taken place but gave few details.

The government's Canadian Security Intelligence Service says hackers try to break into government networks every day.

"Another traditional economic espionage target we often come across is the oil and gas industry," the spy agency said in its annual report released last week.

CSIS did not identify nations it said were responsible for the attacks. In 2010, the head of CSIS said ministers in two of Canada's 10 provinces were under "the general influence of a foreign government" and made clear he was talking about China.

Syria rebels say launch "decisive battle" in Aleppo

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels said they had launched a major attack in Aleppo on Thursday at the start of a "decisive battle" to push President Bashar al-Assad's forces out of the country's biggest city.

Heavy fighting was reported in around 14 districts by opposition activists and several rebel brigades, though the scale of the fighting could not be confirmed independently.

A video posted on YouTube by rebels showed Abdulqadir al-Saleh, the head of the biggest rebel force in Aleppo, the Tawheed Brigade, carrying a walkie talkie and announcing the start of the assault.

"Now the attack on Assad's forces has started on all fronts and God willing today will be decisive in Aleppo," he said.

The 18-month-old uprising against Assad has killed 30,000 people and the violence is escalating sharply, say activists. World powers are meeting at the United Nations but are divided over the crisis, which has descended into civil war.

The U.N. refugee agency said up to 700,000 Syrian refugees may flee the country by the end of the year, nearly quadrupling its June forecast for the exodus from the deepening crisis.

Around 294,000 refugees have crossed into neighboring Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey, most of them in the last two months.

"This is a significant outflow taking place, 100,000 people in August, 60,000 in September and at the moment 2,000 or 3,000 per day or night," Panos Moumtzis, Regional Refugee Coordinator for UNHCR, said on Thursday in Geneva.

The flow of refugees surged in August when Assad deployed jets and helicopters to strike rebel-held towns in the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, sending thousands across the border with Turkey.

"ZERO HOUR"

Rebels flooded into Aleppo two months ago but have been held back by low ammunition and the army's superior firepower.

Insurgents from many brigades in Aleppo said "zero hour" had been announced by calls of Allahu Akbar ("God is greatest") from mosques at 4 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Thursday. They said there were clashes in the heart of the city, including the Hamidiya and Midan districts.

Tawheed Brigade Spokesman Abu Firas said all the battalions working in Aleppo "from the small ones that consist of ten people to the big ones" had met to agree on the offensive two days ago.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a violence watchdog with a networks of activists in the country, said hundreds of insurgents were taking part in heavy fighting and the government was responding with heavy artillery.

Aleppo is split roughly in half, with rebels in the east and government forces and local Assad-loyal militia in the west.

Syria's rebels are a mixture of army defectors, Islamists and civilians who have taken up arms against Assad.

Some groups have been accused of human rights abuses and western powers who call for Assad's removal are reluctant to support the disparate fighters. Western diplomats say they are looking for a clear command structure and coordination among rebels.

"STAIN ON U.N."

World leaders meeting at the United Nations have expressed concern at the violence but are deadlocked over their response to the conflict, which pits mainly Sunni Muslim rebels against Assad, who is from an Alawite minority close to Shi'ite Islam.

Qatar, one of several Sunni Muslim powers which supports the rebels, called for a no-fly zone to provide a safe haven inside Syria. French President Francois Hollande also called on the global body to protect what he called "liberated zones" under rebel control.

But there is little chance of securing a Security Council mandate for such action given the opposition of veto-wielding members Russia and China.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in Moscow on Wednesday any attempt to use force unilaterally or interfere with events in the Middle East would be counterproductive. China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said the destiny of the region "should be held in the hands of its own people".

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday Russia, China and Iran's stance on Syria was letting a massacre go on unabated.

Activists said more than 300 people died on Wednesday, making it one of the bloodiest yet. They said 55 people had been killed in rural areas around Damascus, including at least 40 who appeared to have been executed in the town of al-Dhiyabia, southeast of the capital.

The Observatory also said 14 people had been killed in a rebel bomb attack on a military command centre in Damascus and in a prolonged gun battle between rebels and members of the security forces.

The Islamist militant group Al Nusra Front claimed responsibility on Thursday for the assault, saying it was carried out in two stages, starting with a suicide bomber detonating a car near the building.

Rebels have also targeted Assad's inner circle during the conflict. The president's widowed sister Bushra has moved to the United Arab Emirates, a source close to the UAE government said on Thursday, apparently having fled with her children after her powerful husband was killed.

Bushra al-Assad, Bashar's older sister, was married to Assef Shawkat, the former deputy defense minister who was killed in a bomb attack in Damascus on July 18.

Napiergrass: A potential biofuel crop for the sunny Southeast

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A grass fed to cattle throughout much of the tropics may become a biofuel crop that helps the nation meet its future energy needs, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientist.

Napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum) is fairly drought-tolerant, grows well on marginal lands, and filters nutrients out of runoff in riparian areas, according to William Anderson, a geneticist in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Crop Genetics and Breeding Research Unit in Tifton, Ga. ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of developing new sources of bioenergy.

Government mandates call for production of up to 36 billion gallons of biofuel by 2022. While much of that will come from grain ethanol, 21 billion gallons is expected to be derived from other crop-based feedstocks.

As part of a nationwide search for alternatives, Anderson and his colleagues compared napiergrass with several other candidate feedstocks in a study to see how they would fare in head-to-head competition. The researchers grew energy cane, napiergrass, switchgrass and giant reed for four years and compared biomass yields and soil nutrient requirements.

Joseph Knoll, a post-doctoral researcher in Anderson's laboratory, led the research effort. The team included Timothy Strickland and Robert Hubbard, ARS scientists with the agency's Southeast Regional Watershed Research Unit in Tifton, and Ravindra Malik of Albany State University in Albany, Ga.

With sunny skies and long growing seasons, farms and forests in the Southeastern United States are expected to play a major role in providing biofuel crops. The researchers' findings, along with others, show that napiergrass could be a viable biofuel crop in the Southeast's southern tier. It is not as cold-tolerant as switchgrass, but does offer advantages, such as continuing to produce biomass until the first frost. The research results have been published in BioEnergy Research.

The researchers are continuing to study napiergrass with an eye toward improving yields, usable fiber content, and disease resistance. They are also evaluating production systems that use chicken litter, synthetic fertilizer, and winter cover crops, as well as different irrigation levels, harvest times and planting dates. Preliminary findings in those studies show yields are sufficient without irrigation, and that there is little difference in yield when poultry litter is used instead of synthetic fertilizers.

Jefferies cuts HP on weak PC business, risk from mobile push

(Reuters) - Jefferies & Co downgraded Hewlett-Packard Co to "underperform" from "hold," saying it continued to expect problems in the company's personal computer, services, and printer businesses.

The world's largest personal computer maker has been struggling with shrinking PC sales as consumers opt for smartphones and tablets, tough economic conditions in Europe and slowing growth in China.

HP recently wrote down $13.9 billion in assets related to its purchase of Electronic Data Systems Corp.

Jefferies also said it expects HP to aggressively invest in the smartphone and tablet markets, which may be risky, and cut its price target on the company's stock to $14 from $17.

Shares of the company, which closed at $17.11 on the New York Stock Exchange, were down 1.4 percent at $16.87 in premarket trading on Thursday.

Recent comments from HP suggest it may be focusing on tablets and smartphones again, despite its botched acquisition of Palm, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said in a note to clients.

"While the move makes sense strategically, we see it as a high risk move. On top of adding costs and working capital burdens to an already stressed balance sheet, there could be additional write-offs," Misek said.

Misek is a four-star rated analyst for the accuracy of his earnings estimates on HP, according to Thomson Reuters Starmine data.

He expects HP's services business, which provides outsourcing and support services, to decline as old service contracts of its AlphaServer product taper off in 2013 and inventory problems at its printer business to take several quarters to be resolved.

Woman hit by bullet at New Mexico State game

Victim thought it was a bug bite; police think shot was fired into air outside stadium

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:16 p.m. ET Sept. 23, 2012

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - University police say a woman watching the New Mexico-New Mexico State game was struck in the leg by a bullet apparently fired from outside Aggie Memorial Stadium.

Deputy Chief Andy Bowen of the New Mexico State University Police says the woman in her 50s was watching Saturday night's game when she felt what she thought was a bug bite. Then she realized she had been shot.

The shooting happened at about 8 p.m. at the stadium in Las Cruces.

Bowen says no one in the stadium heard a shot. The trajectory of the bullet was consistent with its being fired into the air outside the stadium and then coming down.

The woman was flown to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where she was doing well Sunday morning.

Claire Danes and Damian Lewis win at Emmy Awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Emmy Awards refused to play it predictably Sunday, with awards going to Damian Lewis and Claire Danes of "Homeland" and Jon Cryer of "Two and a Half Men" and Jimmy Kimmel proving a game but uneven host.

Lewis' win denied Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" wins his fourth Emmy Award as lead actor in a drama and made "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm an also-ran once more.

"I'm one of those pesky Brits, I apologize," said Lewis, who plays an American in the espionage thriller. "I don't really believe in judging art, but I thought I'd show up just in case."

Danes, eye-catching in a bright yellow dress that gracefully draped the pregnant actress, was effusive.

"My husband, my love, my life, my baby daddy, this doesn't mean anything without you," she said.

The acting trophies, along with a best writing award for the show, gave "Homeland" momentum as it headed toward the best drama award.

Aaron Paul won best supporting drama actor for "Breaking Bad" and "Homeland" won the best writing award.

"Thank you so much for not killing me off," Paul said of his drug-dealing character's lucky survival. "Thank you Hollywood for allowing me to be part of your group," he added, noting he'd moved from Idaho to pursue his dreams.

On the comedy side, Emmy voters decided that "Two and a Half Men" with Jon Cryer and without Charlie Sheen is really good, as Cryer claimed the best comedy actor trophy.

"Don't panic, people. Something has clearly gone terribly wrong. I'm stunned," said Cryer, who on the red carpet before the show has expressed confidence he wouldn't win. Among others, he beat out two-time winner Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory."

Ashton Kutcher, who joined the show after Sheen was fired, wasn't nominated.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honored as best actress in comedy for "Veep." ''The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" won best variety series,

Kimmel dared to mock the in memorian package that typically airs at awards shows with one showing him in various guises. Josh Groban sang a mournful "You're Beautiful" in background.

"I will be missed," Kimmel said.

Maggie Smith was honored as best supporting drama actress for her tart-tongued dowager in "Downton Abbey," unhurt by the program's move from the miniseries category.

"Homeland," the domestic espionage thriller, won the best drama writing award.

"Modern Family" made it look easy as the comedy's Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen claimed supporting actor awards, although there was at least a minor backlash online as some questioned whether the show had a deserving season.

Stonestreet was funny and touching as he accepted for his role as half of a devoted gay couple.

"I wouldn't be standing here without Jesse Tyler Ferguson, there is no Cam without Mitch," he said, saluting his co-star. "We get the awesome opportunity to play these two characters on TV and show America and the world what a loving couple we can be just like everybody else."

Then he turned saucy: "I never knew I'd be on TV as a gay man, but I love the pictures of hairy chests you guys are sending me, it's really amazing. Thank you for those."

Among reality competitors, "The Amazing Race" was honored as best reality series, ninth time in 10 nominations for the award. Tom Bergeron of "Dancing With the Stars" won as best host of a reality series.

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane found presenting can be tricky.

"Oh, the mic's over there," he said, after discovering he was on the wrong side of the stage. "This is what happens when you don't come to rehearsal," MacFarlane said.

Fashionistas noticed yellow was hot, the color of choice for Julianne Moore, a pregnant Danes, Julie Bowen and Hannah Simone from "New Girl."

"Best hair and makeup goes to Danes. Perfect!" tweeted Emma Roberts.

The show started with bathroom humor: A filmed bit with Kathy Bates, Zooey Deschanel and other nominated actresses prepping in the restroom, then discovering a weeping Jimmy Kimmel lamenting a Botox reaction he said would keep him off stage as host.

"You look beautiful," he was reassured. "You look like a 'Real Housewife.'"

Viewers of the skit may have been puzzled by a nude Lena Dunham, the creator-star of "Girls," who's routinely brave about showing skin on the HBO comedy.

Standup comic Louis C.K. won the Emmy for best comedy writing for "Louie."

Kimmel set up one of the night's best filmed comedy bits by musing on what "Breaking Bad" would have been like had it aired in a G-rated, pre-cable era.

The answer: a spoof of the opening to "The Andy Griffith Show," with "Breaking Bad" stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, fully suited up to cook crystal meth, out at the lake with their fishing poles as the "Andy Griffith" whistling theme song was heard.

As a pungent punchline, they shot dead an unexpected witness: a friendly deputy billed as co-star Don Knotts.

HBO came into the night with a leading 17 creative arts Emmys from a Sept. 15 ceremony honoring technical and other achievements. CBS was second with 13, followed by PBS with 11. Discovery received six awards, NBC got five and ABC and the Cartoon Network won four each. Fox received two trophies.

Emmy has to prove herself a winner with the audience. After rebounding somewhat to 13.5 million viewers in 2010 after an all-time low in 2008 of 12.3 million, last year's show drew 12.4 million viewers airing on Fox. The ceremony rotates annually among the four major networks.

(AP) ? A jeweler in metro Atlanta is adding some bang to the bling.

Under a new promotion, customers who buy a diamond worth $2,499 or more from D. Geller and Son will get a voucher for a free hunting rifle.

Owner Mike Geller told WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/UC5rCp ) that he got the idea after seeing a similar offer at a Missouri car dealership. He said many of his customers are hunters.

Geller's stores are not handing out rifles at the counter. Customers must go to a local gun dealer to redeem the voucher and follow all laws governing the purchase of firearms.

Some NFL players using helmets that could put them at greater risk of head injuries

In the National Football League, there are rules and restrictions on everything from how much white can show on a player?s socks to what sort of sweatbands can be worn on the wrists. Yet when it comes to the most critical piece of equipment ? the helmeted ? the league provides little guidance and essentially leaves the decision up to each player.

Even as head injuries have become a major concern, the NFL has neither mandated nor officially recommended the helmet models that have tested as the top performers in protecting against collisions believed to be linked to concussions. Some players choose a helmet based on how it looks on television or simply wear the brand they have been using their entire career, even if its technology is antiquated. As a consequence, despite lawsuits and the sport?s ever-increasing speed and violence, some players are using helmets that appear to place them at greater risk of head injuries.

?Frankly, the league has been far more aggressive about thigh and hip pads than they have about ensuring that every player has access and information regarding helmets,? said DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association.

The rules governing helmets are not complex. The league stipulates only that any helmet certified by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment, or NOCSAE, may be worn. That broad standard allows players to use models that may be archaic or did not score well on specific impact tests.

Perhaps most important, while NOCSAE?s standards are based on preventing so-called catastrophic injuries like skull fractures, those standards do not necessarily align with testing designed to simulate the collisions associated with concussions. This discrepancy, some observers say, could be likened to someone judging a modern car?s safety based only on its seatbelts, with no extra credit given for models that also have airbags.

Two years ago, as public awareness grew along with the number of concussion-related lawsuits involving former players, the NFL and the players union commissioned an independent study that identified three helmet models ? the Revolution and the Revolution Speed, both manufactured by Riddell, and the DNA Pro, made by Schutt ? as the top performers in protecting against collisions believed to be linked to concussions. But the league did not require nor officially recommend those helmets, opting only to send a memo to teams explaining the results. The reason, a league spokesman said, was that the study was not definitive with regard to actual on-field performance.

Additionally, while the NFL holds twice-yearly seminars for team equipment managers, there is no formal oversight of team operations with regard to helmets, leaving the process in the hands of each player and his team.

For some players, the choice is easy: The helmet that looks best on TV is the one they want. New York Giants linebacker Keith Rivers, a five-year professional, said there was no doubt that ?a lot of guys go looks first,? preferring more classic models. Modern helmets like the Schutt DNA Pro look ?a little Darth Vaderish,? Rivers said, and are turnoffs to some even if they rate higher in safety tests.

Other players, particularly veterans, simply wear the helmet model they have always worn, some of which can be outdated. Tony Boselli, an offensive lineman who played in the NFL from 1995 to 2002, said players ?just wore what the teams gave us. I didn?t even think about asking for something else.?

Giants centre David Baas, who is in his eighth NFL season, said veterans can be hesitant to change anything related to their equipment.

?Some guys don?t want to switch because they?re comfortable in the same one they?ve had since college or whatever,? he said. ?I change almost every year to get what?s new, but lots of guys don?t. It?s just not on their radar.?

The Giants? equipment director, Joe Skiba, fills out a profile sheet for each new player, complete with physical attributes, personality traits and equipment preferences, including what type of helmet the player wore previously. Any player who is interested can follow Skiba down a short hallway from the team?s main equipment workshop into a cinderblock-walled room with fluorescent lighting. Inside is a row of tall grey metal racks that slide open electronically, as if in a warehouse.

All types of gear fill the shelves, and two of the racks are dedicated solely to helmets. Skiba, a member of the league?s subcommittee on safety equipment and playing rules, said he spent so much time around helmets that he could tell a player?s model simply by looking at the marks the pads left on the player?s forehead. He talks passionately about the intricacies of helmet technology.

?If you?re excited about your job and show it, and make it clear that it?s important to you, the players will take that cue,? Skiba said.

With 32 NFL teams, each with different budgets and equipment staffs, there appear to be variations in how helmet distributions are handled. While some teams, like the Giants, the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins, are known as fastidious and well-stocked, the players union has received complaints in recent seasons, according to an official with knowledge of the criticisms, about teams having few models available for players to test. This is an important factor, players say, because they are reluctant to ask for a helmet they have not tried in practice.

There have also been alleged instances of teams failing to obtain requested models in a timely manner, according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the issue publicly.

The Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs were two of the teams cited, the official said. Rivers, who spent four seasons with the Bengals before joining the Giants, said that in Cincinnati ?our team had used a lot of Riddells and I wanted a Schutt, so I had to complain for a while. I finally got one like weeks and weeks later. Here, you say what you want and you get it.?

The Bengals disputed Rivers? account and said the team was not aware of any complaints about his helmet procedure.

?The Bengals will provide players with any NOCSAE-approved helmet they request, and the club handles all expenses,? the team said in a statement.

A spokesman for the Chiefs declined to comment.

Smith, the head of the players union, declined to identify or address specific complaints but said, ?We are aware of disparities and we have raised it with the NFL, not only this year but for the past several years. The fact that there continues to be disparities is unacceptable.?

Some observers question whether the league?s 23-year partnership with Riddell sends the wrong message. Because Riddell is the official helmet manufacturer of the NFL, it is the only brand name allowed to appear on helmets in use. For the roughly 30 per cent of players who use a different brand, the rubberized plate where the brand name would appear contains a team logo.

The agreement with Riddell does not include specific provisions for preferred pricing or free items for NFL teams, but as a general league policy, all equipment companies are allowed to provide favourable pricing. This can create perception issues: For example, Riddell offers a program in which a team that outfits a high percentage of its players in Riddell helmets ? believed to be roughly 90 per cent to 95 per cent ? is eligible to receive free helmets from the company, perhaps an incentive for budget-minded franchises.

Then there is the issue of consistency. When it comes to potentially mandating certain types of helmets beyond the NOCSAE standard ? based on a yearly study similar to the one the league and the union already commissioned, for example ? the league says it believes such a measure would stifle innovation among the manufacturers. Some helmet manufacturers say the opposite would be true.

Kevin Guskiewicz, a professor at the University of North Carolina and a member of the NFL?s head, neck and spine committee, said that permitting Riddell to be the only brand identified on the field could also be misleading to fans or to parents considering buying helmets for their children.

?I think we need to get away from ?the? helmet of the NFL,? Guskiewicz said. ?The fact that only one helmet can be advertised, the perception is there that they don?t have a choice. I think we need to educate them about that choice.?

A league spokesman said that when the NFL?s agreement with Riddell ends in 2014, the situation will be re-evaluated. Until then, the circumstances surrounding helmet selection seem unlikely to change.

Ultimately, it is up to each player to make what is almost certainly the most important health-related equipment choice of his career ? even if there is no guarantee that each player will be presented with similar information or options.

?This is our livelihood,? Giants quarterback Eli Manning said. ?It?s one of the biggest decisions we make.?

Henry deserves more than 1 game

Thierry Henry is a player of sublime skill, a man who has provided more than one YouTube-worthy goal. His talent is undeniable, and his value to the league cannot be in question.

But it?s becoming increasingly clear: That man has anger issues. And he needs to get it sorted out.

It shows up when he gets frustrated, like when he acted like a child during a routine post-game interview earlier this year.

He can be sneaky about it, like the beginning of last year, when Henry routinely got away with doing that little hand-on-the-face-thing, where he seems to be giving a good natured acknowledgement to an opponent ? but when he?s really giving ?em the business, slapping them harder than they expected.

And how about last October, when he was busted red-handed attempting a real bit of naughtiness against Sporting Kansas City, crashing into a fallen Roger Espinoza.

That night, Henry immediately feigned innocence, as if he didn?t see Espinoza, or as if someone with his grace, balance and athletic ability, somehow, could not avoid a player on the turf while jogging by. We all saw through that one, right? (The referee certainly did, red carding Henry rightly right after he put his knee into the back of Espinoza?s neck.)

Well, something about Sporting KC brings out the worst in Henry.

Because he just got suspended for his latest shenanigan. ?This time Kei Kamara was the victim. Henry, once again, immediately fell to the turf as if he was the injured party.

(MORE: the latest Henry suspension ? a cynic?s view)

And speaking of injury, let?s not forget two seasons back, when Henry injured FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman in an episode that was probably more about carelessness than hostility. (Here?s the video clip of that one.)

Considering his history, Henry probably should have gotten more than one game for something so needless as what happened this week against SKC.

Next time it happens, MLS really should throw the book at him. The league simply cannot have different standards for marquee players in matters of discipline.

What is Inbound Marketing? | Business 2 Community

learn why inbound marketing matters Attention marketers, PR professionals and small business owners! We?re about to let you in on a huge secret, which is that traditional interruption marketing strategies are becoming less effective. The way people connect and share information has recently undergone an enormous shift, and it?s time to adapt to the latest changes. The latest buzzword used to describe the new best way of connecting with your future clients is ?inbound marketing.?

No, it?s not a newfangled trend that will be replaced in another 6 months. Even though Facebook has replaced Myspace, websites, blogs and social media networks as a major highway for modern interactions aren?t going anywhere fast.? Put on your learning caps and join us for an overview of the basics of Inbound Marketing.

So, What is Inbound Marketing?

Traditional marketing methods, which those in the know refer to as outbound marketing, have typically included direct mail, cold calling, billboards, TV and Radio Ads, and email blasts to a purchased list of names. Over time, these methods have become less effective because we?ve become experts at blocking them out. Whether it?s caller ID, the FTC Do Not Call list, email spam filters, NetFlix or Sirius satellite radio, blocking traditional marketing methods has become a serious industry in it?s own right. Additionally, the Internet continues to grow as a major highway for learning, exploring and connecting with our friends. We?re more like to hit Google for information on major trends, and less likely to invest in an expensive trade show or seminar for learning the latest.

Inbound Marketing is known as permission marketing, because it?s less about bombarding people with cold calls during the dinner hour and more about optimal positioning. Inbound marketing is about helping yourself get found by people who have made the choice to learn a little bit more about your industry. Permission marketing is based on content that attracts and nurtures prospects, as opposed to commercials, spam, billboards or phone calls that interrupt them.

Who Are You Reaching, Anyway?

A good way to decipher the two types of marketing is to think of outbound marketing as a machine gun and inbound as a sniper rifle. With a machine gun ,the shots are less targeted and once in a while you?ll hit your target. On the other hand, a sniper rifle is more focused and it takes far less effort to hit the target. While this example might be a little strong, with traditional marketing methods you?re always going to be spending money trying to reach people who just don?t care. They don?t need your product, they?re never make the purchase, but they?re still reached by your television advertisement or direct mail drop.? Blogs, podcasts, videos, eBooks, eNewsletters, white papers, SEO, social media marketing, and other forms of content marketing are considered more targeted and effective at reaching people who already care.

Does Inbound Marketing Really Work?

Marketing software company Hubspot?s research has shown that companies that blog have 50 percent more website visitors than those that don?t and inbound marketing leads cost around 60 percent less on average. On the contrary, 86% of people skip through television commercials and 44% of direct mail is never opened. The reality is that Inbound Marketing drives more traffic and qualified leads, generates real customers, and is less expensive. What small business owner doesn?t want to spend less money on their marketing with bigger and better results?

What Caused this Cultural Shift?

The internet has been the driving force behind this paradigm shift. Consumers no longer even need to rely on billboards and TV spots to learn about new products and services to solve their needs. Thanks to major search engines like Google, performing basic research before making a purchase has become more of an independent, self-directed venture than ever before. With the rise of social media networks, consumers have been given a voice to provide feedback on great and not-so-great customer service experiences. New marketing dialogue has now become a two-way conversation between clients and brands, and traditional interruption marketing is being ignored.

Is This a Good Thing for My Small Business?

Absolutely. More than ever, consumers are taking purchase decisions into their own hands and using the Internet to find solutions. All marketers have to do position themselves optimally to get found by their future clients. This means building an effective website, maintaining a blog and an active presence on major social media networks. Use your online presence as a platform for showcasing your expertise, and actively invite your consumers to engage. Take the time to build relationships, find ways to provide value, answer their questions and enjoy the ease of letting your business come to you.

Man badly mauled in tiger attack at Bronx Zoo

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

Updated at 5:40 p.m. ET: NEW YORK --?A man jumped out of the Bronx Zoo's monorail into the tiger exhibit Friday afternoon, where he was badly mauled by one of the big cats before zoo employees rescued him using fire extinguishers, zoo officials said.

The man, believed to be around 25, severely injured his leg and foot in the attack, which happened just before 3:30 p.m., sources tell NBC 4 New York. He also has deep cuts to the back.?

Once the tiger backed away, the man was instructed to roll under a hot wire to safety, said Bronx Zoo Director Jim?Breheny in a statement. The keepers then called the tiger into its exhibit holding area and secured him there, Breheny said.

It appears the man jumped approximately 20 feet into the den, police said. Before rescuers could reach the man to help him, they first had to get the tiger into a cage, authorities said.

21st Century Schools Require 21st Century Finance

Recent teacher protests in Chicago show that students and parents suffer when public employee unions and elected officials fight over how to run schools. But there is one issue that should unite both sides: Tapping private sector capital to build schools - whether traditional or alternative - and other education-related infrastructure, leaving more public dollars for the instructional needs of children. Yonkers, a school district in New York State, is doing just that by deploying a solution that has worked well for transportation and other types of public infrastructure: Public-private partnerships (PPPs).

Schools matter. Children spend thousands of hours in?them,?so the existence of adequate facilities and learning environments within them?is important for academic success. Most school districts can't self-finance facilities up-front because they need new and/or improved capacity right now. But where's the money going to come from? Unlike roads, water treatment or other infrastructure assets, traditional public schools don't generate revenue for themselves. And with local governments struggling with declining property taxes and taxpayers unwilling to approve new tax and/or bond measures, school districts need creative new solutions to generate capital for new and modernized K-12 school facilities.

PPPs usher in private sector capital upfront, which is repaid in exchange for maintenance of the facilities over the course of the contract. Maintenance costs over the long-term are lumped in and included as a payment for a set period. Schools use the resources they would have used to repay municipal bonds and maintain the facility to repay a private partner instead, and more cost effectively. Rigorous procurement allows competing private firms to drive down costs within a framework that protects taxpayers.

Under the traditional model, school districts are responsible not only for overseeing education, but also for finance, building/property maintenance and asset management. In contrast, well-structured PPPs can drive down construction costs and lower life-cycle maintenance costs, freeing up resources that can be deployed in the classroom. These benefits should unify school administrators and unions, not to mention parents and children. Superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools Bernard P. Pierorazio recently explained, "(The PPP allows us to) concentrate on what we do best - preparing students to achieve."

Though Canada, New Zealand and several European countries have used PPPs to upgrade or deliver new schools in recent decades, this is a relatively new and growing phenomenon?within the United States. But major market players, such as institutional investors and international infrastructure firms, appear ready to meet that need. For example, Yonkers School District earlier this year hired PPP advisors to help determine whether private investment/financing can be used to rebuild 38 schools for $1.7 billion. The buildings are in dire disrepair, with over 95 percent of them deemed "unsatisfactory" by the state.

Experience has shown that PPPs are able to accelerate the delivery of infrastructure projects, getting them on the ground faster, better and cheaper than government's traditional red tape-ridden approach. That responsiveness is critical because the over 25,000-student district is 4,000 seats short and is expected to grow an additional 3,000 seats within the next 10 years, leaving a 7,000 seat shortfall. As Yonkers Board of Education President Paresh Patel notes, "The (PPP) model is a viable solution to the ongoing financial constraints that have limited our ability to provide our students with the modern, well-maintained learning environments they deserve."

Yonkers isn't alone. Last year, the Puerto Rico PPP Authority sought private partners to deliver a dozen new K-12 schools that are being built right now. Schools are one part of a larger PPP strategy being pursued by Governor Luis Fortuno's administration under the "Schools for the 21st Century" PPP program. Fortuno is contracting with private operators to design, build and maintain approximately 100 schools in 78 municipalities across the island. The program was designed as an innovative way to replace many decades-old, crumbling schools in one fell swoop, notable for a jurisdiction that has suffered from poor credit and limited access to infrastructure capital. PPP Authority Executive Director David Alvarez recently explained to Reason Foundation that he sees the PPP program as an indirect?path toward improving academic performance by providing and delivering better infrastructure. "[Our] goal is for students to perform better at school-to keep more children in school and to get better results."

Yonkers, Puerto Rico and others are using PPPs because they tap the strength of the private sector to deliver and maintain facilities (which is not a strength of school districts, whose core mission is academic), based on the public sector's need for good learning environments. Their approach is based on rigorous, well-structured PPP contracts that often span hundreds of pages that transfer key financial, project delivery and operational risks from the public sector (read: taxpayers) to the private sector. Exemplary PPP contracts incorporate enforceable provisions that make the private vendor responsible for everything from future repairs and maintenance, to the scope and timing of projects. Policymakers also sometimes include language to incentivize private partners to finish on (or even ahead of) schedule or hedge against both predictable and unpredictable changes in circumstances like inclement weather or fluctuating commodity prices.

PPPs aren't just valuable at providing capital when it's needed, or in holding down long-term asset maintenance costs; they can also be used to prioritize investment in the right facilities, in the right place, at the right time. They do this because projects have to pass rigorous evaluation from the market to determine whether or not it's a worthy investment. Of course, public officials could push a PPP to build something unnecessary, but that's true of traditional bond financing as well. In general, PPPs brings more of a cost-benefit and return on investment mentality to the public sector to drive more effective resource allocation.

Schools have to embrace new ways of delivering education if they're going to prepare students for the 21st century workforce during an increasingly difficult economic and fiscal environment. PPPs are a proven tool that has worked across roads, airports, seaports, and other public infrastructure. Yonkers and Puerto Rico are showing how this tool can be applied to schools so that policymakers can improve - if not reinvent - the American education system.

TORONTO (AP) ? Canadian autoworkers have reached contract deals with two of the Big Three and now are focusing in on the third ? Chrysler.

The Canadian Auto Workers union said late Thursday it reached a tentative deal with General Motors Co., leaving Chrysler as the only Detroit automaker that hasn't agreed to a new labor deal.

CAW President Ken Lewenza called it a difficult few days but said GM ultimately agreed to the framework of a deal that the union reached with Ford Motor Co. earlier this week.

The union decided to keep working past a midnight Monday strike deadline after reaching a deal with Ford and extending its contracts with GM and Chrysler.

Workers stayed on the job as talks continued, but the union warned it could go on strike after giving GM and Chrysler 24 hours' notice. They wanted the Ford contract to serve as a template for the other two companies.

Like the Ford deal, the GM agreement cuts wages for new hires and freezes pay for current workers. But it also gives them lump-sum payments to cover inflation and for ratifying the deal.

Under the Ford and GM deals, the companies will pay new workers 60 percent of the current top wage of $33.89 Canadian dollars ($34.74) an hour, according to the CAW. That would mean new workers would be paid around $20.33 Canadian ($20.84). They can move up the wage scale and reach the top wage in 10 years.

"We're avoiding a permanent two-tier wage system which was the stumbling block today," Lewenza said.

U.S. workers at the Detroit automakers approved a similar two-tier wage agreement five years ago, but in those agreements, workers don't automatically get the top wage after 10 years.

Lewenza said Chrysler hasn't agreed to the pattern set by Ford.

"As long as we're making progress there is no need to pull the trigger," Lewenza said of the possibility of putting Chrysler on 24-hour strike notice. "The trigger is the last tool in the tool box."

Canadian Ford auto workers will vote this weekend on the tentative agreement and the union said results of the vote will be released Sunday night. There was no immediate word when GM workers would vote on their deal.

The auto companies say Canada is the most expensive place in the world to make cars and trucks, and they could move production south if the CAW doesn't cut costs. The CAW represents about 21,000 auto workers in Canada and about 16 percent of auto production in North America.

"This set of talks with our labor partner have been candid and constructive, reflecting the challenges facing Canadian manufacturers," GM said in a statement.

GM and Chrysler make popular models in Canada that would soon be in short supply if a strike occurred. CAW workers also make key engine parts and other components for U.S.-built cars. In Canada, GM makes the Chevrolet Camaro, Impala and Equinox, along with the Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS and GMC Terrain. Chrysler makes minivans and the Dodge Challenger and Charger, Chrysler 300, and Ram Cargo Van in Canada.

Canada's advantages in the past ? a weak Canadian dollar and government health care ? have all but vanished compared with U.S. factories. In addition, the United Auto Workers union in the U.S. has agreed to steeper concessions than the CAW, making U.S. labor costs cheaper. Going into the talks, the Detroit automakers were paying an estimated $60 to $62 an hour for labor and benefits in Canada, compared with $50 an hour at Chrysler, $56 at Ford and $58 at GM, according to the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit research group.

The federal Canadian and Ontario province governments worked in tandem with the U.S. government on auto bailouts in 2009 to maintain Canada's share of North American auto production. Canada's share peaked at 3.2 million cars in 1999, about 17.4 percent of North American production. In 2011, Canada produced 2.1 million vehicles, or about 16 percent.

'Changes in body weight, composition, and shape: A 4-year study of college students' published today in Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and

Ottawa, Canada (September 17, 2012) A new study published today in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism (APNM) looks beyond the much-feared weight gain common to first-year students and reports on the full 4-year impact of higher education on weight, BMI, and body composition.

"Gropper et al. present a unique study that follows students through their undergraduate years. It documents the nature of the weight gain and shows the differences between males and females," says Susan Whiting, a professor of nutrition and dietetics at the University of Saskatchewan.

"While dozens of studies have investigated weight gain during the freshman year of college and have reported on the so called "freshman 15" (the commonly held belief that students gain an average of 15 lbs their first year of college), our study is the first to examine changes in weight, body mass index, body composition, and body shape over the 4-year college period," explains Sareen Gropper, a co-author of the study and researcher at Auburn University in Alabama.

The study followed 131 college students from the beginning of their first year to the end of their senior year. After 4 years in college about 70% of students had gained weight, which averaged at 5.3 kg, or 11.68 lbs; males gained significantly more weight, percent body fat , and BMI than females; and the percentage of participants considered overweight or obese increased from 18% to 31%.

"College and university students are often living away from home; they do not have a parent grocery shopping or preparing food for them. They can be distracted from their health by their studies and by extracurricular activities," says Terry Graham, Editor of APNM, and a professor in the Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph. "While one can alter their body composition at anytime by tipping the balance of energy intake and expenditure, this investigation demonstrates how important the years of early adulthood can be in this aspect. After 4 years the changes are quite substantial even though the daily, weekly, and even monthly responses are subtle. This study highlights that students need to make healthy choices and also that the institutions need to take steps to facilitate these decisions."

Gropper agrees, "Our findings clearly suggest the need for additional campus-based health promotion strategies for students from the freshman year through their senior year of college."

This study highlights that students need to make healthy choices and also that the institutions need to take steps to facilitate these decisions."

Gropper agrees, "Our findings clearly suggest the need for additional campus-based health promotion strategies for students from the freshman year through their senior year of college."
