How MiGym plans to quantify the health club workout ? Mobile ...

Chicago app developer MiGym is giving health clubs an app store presence, but it has bigger plans. It hopes to make the gym a critical element in the quantified self, tracking members? workout data and sharing that information with fitness and health platforms.

The new year is just a few days away, which means New Year?s resolutions are just about to kick in. A lot of people (myself included) have committed to getting in shape, but for many (again myself included) that resolution doesn?t get much further than signing up for a gym membership and a few perfunctory workouts before those grand fitness plans fall to the wayside.

A Chicago-based startup called MiGym, however, wants to weave a tighter-knit relationship between the gym and its customers, benefiting active exercisers and the less motivated alike. It?s developed a smartphone app platform used by health clubs across the country. The app doesn?t just create a smartphone presence for a gym, it seeks to engage its members more actively. It uses social networking to connect members with similar sporting interests and exercise regimes, and it allows them to view, book and manage classes.

MiGym appGeorge Monical, who heads up the MiGym division of Chicago app development shop Solstice Mobile, said he has even bigger ambitions for the app. Soon MiGym?s dozens of national and regional health club chains will be able to start tracking workout data. MiGym is tapping into APIs offered by gym equipment makers like Life Fitness and exploring ways of quantifying the health benefits of more traditional workouts from aerobics classes to free weights ? tying them all into a single unified workout tracking tool.

It?s a neat idea, but not one that?s very useful if all of that info is trapped inside your gym app ? it would become just one more disparate repository of health information. But Monical said MiGym believes strongly in the concept of the quantified self (subscription required), and it aims to incorporate its apps into the overall fitness data ecosystem, Monical said. In addition to working with Life Fitness, its tapping into the APIs of Fitbit (see disclosure) and Runkeeper as well as any source of open health data it can get its hands on.

The idea is that MiGym will accept information for its own app and share it with other apps, Monical said. So if you take a three-mile run in the park tracked by an external app or device, those steps run and calories will be included in MiGym?s meters. Conversely, any data taken from the gym, whether it?s scooped directly out of an elliptical trainer or approximated from a kickboxing class, could be funneled into any outside fitness portal, Monical said.

Eventually, MiGym wants to explore direct partnerships with the healthcare industry, transmitting information to your doctor or ? with permission ? to your insurer. If State Farm and Allstate can track use machine-to-machine technology to track your real driving behavior and consequently reward safe drivers with lower premiums, Monical asked, why can?t health insurers do the same thing, granting lower rates to people who keep in shape?

Disclosure: Fitbit is backed by True Ventures, a venture capital firm that is an investor in the parent company of this blog, Giga Omni Media. Om Malik, founder of Giga Omni Media, is also a venture partner at True.

Syrian rebels make more gains in north

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels fully captured a northern town near the Turkish border on Tuesday after weeks of heavy fighting and attacked a regime air base in a neighboring province, activists said.

The air base is in Aleppo province, where opposition fighters have already captured three other large military bases in recent months. Rebels have also laid siege to the international airport in the city of Aleppo, Syria's commercial capital, and launched an offensive on the police academy near the city.

With steady rebel gains across the north, President Bashar Assad's regime is having increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province, especially after rebels cut a major thoroughfare from Damascus. It is just another sign that the opposition is consolidating its grip across large swathes of territory in northern Syria near the Turkish border.

In his traditional Christmas address, Pope Benedict XVI decried the slaughter of the "defenseless" in Syria, where anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in fighting since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's rule began in March 2011.

In another blow to the regime, activists said that Mohammed Adnan Arabo, a member of Syria's parliament has left the country and joined the opposition. Ahmad Ramadan, an executive council member of the opposition Syrian National Council group, and other activists said Arabo arrived in Turkey on Tuesday.

He said the regime's hold on power is deteriorating and rebels are besieging military bases for weeks until they either take over or negotiate with local army commanders to surrender. He added that some regime forces are being diverted to the capital to fight there.

"The regime cannot protect its bases and also cannot send forces to support troops under siege," he said.

Over the weeks, rebels fighting to overthrow Assad have also been able to take the battles into the capital Damascus, Assad's seat of power, where the southern neighborhoods are witnessing almost daily clashes between troops and rebels.

The big successes began in mid-November, when rebels captured Aleppo's Regiment 46, a large military base, carting off tanks, armored vehicles and truck-loads of munitions. Three weeks later, they captured the Sheik Suleiman base near the provincial capital of Aleppo and days later they took an infantry base in the city.

Last week, they captured an army technical regiment near Damascus' international airport but were pushed back in a counter attack. The army command said in a statement that the regiment's commander was killed in the battle.

The rebels have also brought the battle to areas around Damascus international airport where some flights were cancelled earlier this month because of the intensity of the fighting.

One of the biggest blows came in Damascus on Dec. 12 when a suicide attacker blew his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many, including Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar. The government denied at first that al-Shaar had been wounded until it got out when he was brought last week to a Beirut hospital for treatment.

It was the second injury the minister suffered after being wounded in a July 17, bomb inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.

The rebel takeover of Harem, a town of 20,000 in northern Idlib province, was the latest in a string of recent rebel successes.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels captured Harem in the early hours of Tuesday. Mohammed Kanaan, an Idlib-based activist, said the last post to be taken was the historic citadel, which overlooked the town. The army had turned the citadel into a military post.

"Harem is fully liberated now," Kanaan said via Skype. He added that as the rebels pounded army posts and checkpoints in Harem, the troops withdrew to the citadel that later fell in the hands of rebels.

Rami-Abdul-Rahman, who heads to Observatory, said nearly 30 soldiers and pro-government gunmen surrendered late Monday. He added that rebels set free all gunmen at the age of 16 or less and referred others to local tribunals.

"Harem was very important because it is one of the towns that was loyal to the regime," Abdul-Rahman said by telephone about the town that is nearly a mile from the Turkish border.

In Aleppo province, which neighbors Idlib, local activist Mohammed Saeed said rebels attacked the air base in the town of Mannagh near the Turkish border. He said it is one of four air bases in the province, adding that rebels also attacked the police academy near the city of Aleppo.

Regime forces have been using helicopters to carry supplies to besieged areas and to attack rebel positions.

The regime has had increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province after rebels captured in October the strategic town Maaret al-Numan. The town is on the highway that links Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a major battleground in the civil war since July.

"Airplanes and helicopters are the only way to send supplies since the Free Syrian Army controls the land," Saeed said. He added that rebels are also laying a siege to Aleppo's international airport known as Nairab and threatening to shoot down military or civilians planes using it.

In the Damascus suburb of Jaramana, opposition gunmen ambushed the head of military intelligence in the area and seriously wounded him. He later died of his wounds, the Observatory said.

Elsewhere in Syria, the Observatory reported violence in areas including the eastern province of Deir el-Zour, the southern area of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Height and the southern region of Daraa.

In Israel, top officials said they cannot corroborate Syrian activists' claims that the regime has used chemical weapons against its citizens.

Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio that Israel has "no confirmation or proof" the regime has employed such weapons in the civil war. He says Israel is "monitoring the situation with concern."

Defense Ministry official Amos Gilad told Israel Radio that Syria was closely guarding its chemical weapons stockpiles.

On Monday, the Observatory quoted activists in the central city of Homs as saying that six rebels died in two neighborhoods the day before after inhaling white smoke that came out of shells fired by government troops in the area. Amateur videos released by activists showed men in hospital beds suffering breathing problems as doctors placed oxygen masks over their faces.

Theoretical frameworks on supplier relationship management in ...

Abstract? The evolution of modern communication methods, especially the transfer of data and information via the Internet, allowing companies to relocate relationships with business partners worldwide. New trends in the field of management, especially in the economic instability that shakes the world, have generated an increase in the significance of the concept of supplier relationship management (SRM). Enterprises that grants importance to this new concept become more flexible in dealings. By exchange of information they can streamline business processes more effectively and may have better access to resources boom. In this context, the success of an organization is due not only to their own efforts, but undoubtedly the result of collaboration with partners.
Keywords- supply relationship management, commitment, influence, behavior, collaboration, partnership.
I. INTRODUCTION
The deepening global economic disparities at regional or country level produces dramatic effects in the approach of business relationships. Constant changes in the market involve companies in a global competition [1]. Thus, in response to the upheavals of the new economic environment, companies can use competitive behavior and readjustment strategies to widening communications with business partners [2]. These challenges are forcing economic operators to accept and implement new technologies, to adopt modified forms of organization and management, to connect and to join electronic networks for transferring information for not coming in isolation, and, last but not least, to look in a different way the contribution of individual to the development of the company and its corporate strategies. Therefore, in terms of access to increasingly limited resources the option for integration and strengthening relations in the supply chain enables a better understanding of the needs and desires of partners [3]. Moreover, creating and maintaining a good supplier relationships emerges as a breath of new managerial philosophy based on several key features: growth and development, respect, partnership, proper risk management, developing new capabilities. But all this requires costs. Which weigh in company option to choose and maintain certain providers is undoubtedly the benefit consistency made on short or long term. Thus, by permanent concern they have, respective coordinate activities in order to obtain a benefit, companies focus more on suppliers than customers. Close collaboration with a valuable set of suppliers is always more productive than termination with them [5]. With such perspective customers and suppliers are not intended primarily to maximize short-term trading results, but looking for an advantage generated by long-term ties. Thus, through the relationship with suppliers, business management is put into a new light, and companies that are willing to embrace this philosophy will acquire in time adequate results. It is necessary to seek along with the partners the most effective ways of maintaining risk management business credibility and commitment initiated.
II. SRM. MEANINGS AND DETERMINATION.
A number of authors, Donoghue [4], IDC [13] argue existence of three essential elements in SRM: collaboration, integration and trust.
A. Colaboration

One way is to take the collaboration partner enterprises of the principle just the right time (JIT) ?Fig. 1?.

Larson [14] Guerra and Cianchette [15] consider that such cooperation does not require for networking organizations just an art of maintaining a balance between supply and demand, or only a mathematical rigor in the production process, or perfect synchronization of supply in customer-supplier equation, but also the mutual benefit provided by implementing common applications that enable continuous exchange of information and better control over the management of long-term contracts. More flexible organizational processes in terms of SRM by such agreements also involve discussion between the partners for the availability of affordable solutions. It is envisaged first the customer savings, and secondly guarantees for suppliers that goods will not remain in stock.
As for cooperation in the information exchange, Wienclaw [16], Wis. & Morrison [17] explain historical development of relations with suppliers, especially by making B2B software, by computer networks, the purchase and installation software , ideas, supported by Sethi [2] by showing businesses real time access in to information shared as a result of overcoming many of the technical barriers of the past thanks to the IT boom of 21st century.
B. Integration
By integrating, SRM intends to deepen the ties of dependency and mutual influence between the parties, creating the synergy processes in the value chain. Synthesizing the best practices of SRM, Barry, Senthil and Pradip [18] agree that the key business players, using a common e-platform of trade and marketing (e-marketplaces) they enlarge their e-business concerns, synchronizing the processes by connecting companies directly or indirectly. A similar view expresses the researchers Gartner Group [19] concerning the activation e-sourcing activities and e-procurement in B2B electronic market platform using the Internet. This approach to SRM enables large enterprises, small and medium to exchange goods, services, and information in a more efficient and effective way than was previously possible. Even if the supplier relationship management is theoretically it has a broad coverage and is not in Daley?s opinion [20] fully installed as a competence in business management, but rather accepted and defined as a formal discipline after Evans [21]. As a result of inadequate definition in SRM organizations it has little impact. It is in an identity crisis and has reduced its functions in integrated enterprise activities. Given the current limited objectives, particularly the cost of operating and risk management, says Vliet [22], SRM does not always appear as a source of competitive advantage. His study shows first frequency signal that this happens in organizations whose managers focus exclusively on supply problems, with low important component in increasing the effectiveness of relationship management. Secondly, some companies always pay attention to what managers are doing to strengths the links with suppliers recognizing the significance of relative size is important in creating value for the benefit of both parties.
C. Trust
The success depends on reliability and commitment of each partner in achieving strategies. Thus, SRM requests the acquisition and implementation of skills, values and behaviors aligned without distinction between providers. Usually, Mettler and Rohner [23] argue that the relationship with the suppliers concerns directly the development of the product or service. Taking into account these arguments as valid, Gecker [24] consider the beginning of the relationship as a strategic sourcing initiative and Emiliani [25] aware that this subsequently evolves in data and performance indicators. Adapting to the changing demands of end users is possible, as claimed by Lintukangas [26], the proximity of suppliers to increase trust and deepening cooperation and interaction.
Given these above three components, the company may adopt and implement a management system of providers to meet needs and to establish requirements in a fair. It may also standardizing the nomenclature of products, as suggested by Poirier [27]. This way no confusion or misunderstanding may occur regarding the delivery of goods or services.
III. BEHAVIOUR-COMMITMENTS IN SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIPS
A. Behaviour
Different behavior of economic agents and consumers are influenced by the needs and possibilities of access to resources. In their efforts to have a certain influence, the economic actors are in different relationships, but in Pound?s opinion [28], without always having a systematic and successful way. Therefore, as Moldovan [29] says, a relationship is convenient while it works fine. That is, for as long as the work and effort are appreciated and the desires and needs are taken into account. Achieving and maintaining connections in B2B relationships are the result of the efforts of partners. Strengthening of relationship gives safety to the parties while confidence expresses and devotion records. Thus supplier knows that he will have support if problems arise. However in a combination of type SRM it may occur elements that do not go well, that may vitiate the relationship, destabilize even hopelessly compromise it. It may appear different points of view (even if the ideas seem to be converging) state of decline, demotivation. Overcoming or elimination of problems in organizations can be done by using analytical models and influence behavior. Patterson, Grenny, Maxfield and McMillan [30], propose the use of the ?six sources of influence? model through which the company can identify measurable results, vital behavior and motivations and skills ?figure 2 ?.

Establishing the organization?s mission by using this model will inevitably change the attitude. Delimitation of of the relationship and clearly state of rules then you have to work with it will remove any assumptions that the partner would know instinctively to adapt the situations. Knowing the parameters of the relationship, perception of partner changes. Provider is given trust and hope in addressing seriously the obligations assumed. Therefore, understanding compliance requirements increase safety and reliability. Being a long process, building and confidence building is addressed especially to men. Abosag, Tynan and Lewis [31] argue that individuals? emotional involvement further reflects on economic relations Therefore, curdling trust claims politeness, friendship, empathy, similarity, honestly.
B. Commitement
Studying organizational behavior, especially in personal ?organization relationship, enabled the emergence of the concept of commitment in the early 1950s. After Abrahamsson [32], the evolution and development of the concept of commitment as presented in today literature, is based on several investigations, claims and disputes between researchers. Many definitions of commitment and measurement methods have been integrated in different models, the most commonly used model of organizational commitment has three components ? affective commitment, normative commitment and continuous commitment as proposed by Meyer and Allen [33].
By adopting commitment by the supplier, according to Abosag, Tynan, Lewis Dwyer [31], it is outlined the long-term benefits: quality products with lower cost information flow improved. The concept of Schurr and Oh [34], the implicit or explicit promise to continue the relationship is supported by Somogyi and Gyau [35], but it is envisaged the faith of partners for any short-term sacrifices to maintain the stability and efficiency as assessed Gyau and Spiller [36].
Representing the amount engages different entities to work together for a common goal, commitment is central to economic relations between partners. In Vogele?s opinion [37], commitment is the force that drives the relationship forward thus it is equated with growth or profitability. Studying manifestation commitment partners Corner and Patterson [38] Corner [39], notifies the occurrence of all kinds of tensions, resistances, and barriers that make it difficult to maintain it because the parties are unable to see the scale from the beginning their actions. The proposed model identifies three major phases of involvement in change, each assuming the completion of several steps ?fig. 3?.

IV. SEGMENTATION OF SUPPLIERS. PARTNERSHIP
To become more competitive companies must face global competition may otherwise risk leaving the business.
Following the achieving of additional values larger companies can make mistakes in choosing suppliers.
Hence the need to identify key suppliers. Degree of cooperation from the perspective of Billingt, Cordon, Volmanit [40], can provide a segmentation of suppliers in a mix of four levels ?fig. 4? on low, common to one very high of super-collaboration.

Trying to determine the depth of the relationship between partners in a business, Lambert [41], proposes a segmentation of collaborations with suppliers through a process with four components as follows: close, partnership, association, vertical integration ?fig. 5?

Lambert, Knemeyer, Gardner [42], confirm that the common law definition of partnership as a business relationship based on mutual trust, openness, sharing risks and rewards arising in business. Therefore, the partnership provides high performance of companies involved, more than would be achieved if they work separately.
Creating and implementing a partnership is a great challenge for managers who know that not all providers may be considered partners. Therefore their interest goes to those companies which will be a true partner. Implementing, developing and improving relations with suppliers can be based on a partnership model involving assessment, formulation, consultation, implementation, negotiation.
Any partnership model contains three types of partnership, says Lambert [41] by making the following specification:
? Type I ? with the wider use and with recognition as partners. Short-term approach.
? Type II ? does not emphasize coordination of activities but more on their integration in a longer time horizon.
? Type III which requires a high level of operational integration.
The enshrined partnership model in Lambert?s conception consists of three elements: ?engine? (Drivers), ?catalyst? (Facilitators), and ?components? (Components), ?fig. 6?.

The three elements lead to an expected result of parties: operational integration.
a) Driver elements are established after careful examination of potential parties counting on their belief in significant benefits by: (1) cost efficiency, (2) improve customer service, (3) marketing advantage and (4) before stability / growth.
and develop partnership providing a basis for good relations while establishing materiality chance. Facilitators include: (1) corporate compatibility, (2) similar managerial philosophy and techniques, (3) reciprocity and (4) symmetry.
c) Component elements are mostly similar set of managerial actions and events that determines and dominates the life of the partnership. Components are operational relationship through: planning, control, communication, sharing of risks and rewards sharing etc.
Sharing of above elements leads to a result that implies an assessment, perhaps a readjustment. Feedback requires regular updating of state drivers, facilitators and components. Own processes and performance measurement provider enables companies to fully inform the partner, not only about the lowest price
V. CONCLUSIONS
The message of this study reinforces the idea that enterprise economy is more advantageous if it is placed increased emphasis on relations with suppliers. As a relatively young discipline, supplier relationship management has no strong response in practice, not being widely adopted in business. Dealing primarily with segmentation suppliers, establishing performance measurement tools and being currently limited to a series of e-processes, SRM is easily confused with a component of acquisition chain (SCM). Therefore, in the forthcoming period, SRM will remain stuck especially in the area of electronic research of the best prices and markets as well as e-procurement, due to increasing interest shown by organizations for the installation of custom electronic systems for tracking processes. Therefore it is for the managers to reconsider SRM and ensure strengthening current practices, especially regarding the relationships of the organization change attitudes, to transfer information on process outsourcing, procurement, contract tracking, etc. SRM adoption by organizations is part of a new management philosophy to increase the commitment and ability of suppliers, to maintain a successful relationship with them.

Low-cost attractions offer cheap getaways

If you plan a vacation in which the primary activities are inexpensive, then the vacation is going to be inexpensive, Hamm writes.

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / December 18, 2012

Park ranger Marge Farnett, center, conducts a tour at the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site in Hyde Park N.Y., in this December 2012 file photo. The vast majority of National Parks are free and even the ones that have a cost are very inexpensive, Hamm writes.

It?s common sense. If you plan a vacation in which the primary activities are expensive things, then the vacation is going to be expensive. If you plan a vacation in which the primary activities are inexpensive, then the vacation is going to be inexpensive.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Thus, most of the time, it makes a lot more sense to choose vacations focused on inexpensive destinations.

How do you actually do that, though? Here are some options for planning a great vacation around inexpensive options.

Head to a national or a state park.?This past summer, we vacationed in western South Dakota. Over the course of a few days, we visited the Black Hills National Forest, Mount Rushmore, Devil?s Tower, and Custer State Park. Our total cost for several days of natural beauty and impressive monuments was a pittance.?

Farewell to Cutchogue church, after 135 years

Photo credit: Randee Daddona | Rev. Msgr. Joseph W. Staudt, pastor of Sacred Heart Parrish Church in Cutchogue, stands inside the church that will close before Christmas. (Dec. 18, 2012)

Christmas will come a few days early this year at Sacred Heart Church in Cutchogue -- a final, bittersweet parting gift from the last of generations of worshippers who started coming to that church 135 years ago.

The building is structurally unsound, is no longer used for regular prayer, and will be closed by New Year's Day.

Its members plan to gather Saturday morning in a tent in front of the church, to pray and sing and reflect on the change in their lives. They will finish by going inside the church for one final look.

Everyone in the parish knows their historic church is closing. But it is swiftly turning from an idea into a reality as Christmas gets closer.

Inside, about a third of the church has been closed off with yellow caution tape. The worshippers have been celebrating Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel, a larger, newer building in nearby Mattituck that is also part of the parish.

The bad news came around Thanksgiving in a letter sent out by Msgr. Joseph Staudt, the pastor. He told church members that an engineering inspection by the Diocese of Rockville Centre had found several problems in the post-and-beam building, including one wall was unsafe, and that it would cost about $2 million to repair.

The diocese will determine the empty building's fate.

"It's sad, but it has to be," Staudt said.

Much of the problem is economic. While the parish is the largest on the North Fork, with 1,100 congregants, it cannot afford the repairs. And, it has been hard to raise the funds to maintain two churches and six other buildings, Staudt added.

Sacred Heart holds 125 people, while Our Lady of Good Counsel holds 450.

A church committee has been working for months on a goodbye ceremony and found the job challenging.

"They said right off the bat that the church was unsafe, that we can't have a closing Mass in the church," said Marion Bopp, who heads the committee. "We rented a heated tent . . . after Mass is over, we will ask people to go reverently into the church."

They will see a Nativity scene set up in front of the church, and the building will be decorated one last time for Christmas, as in years past, with wreaths on the walls and poinsettias on the altar.

People at the 9 a.m. Mass in the tent will get a commemorative bookmark. "If anyone wants to stay and pray, they will stay on the left side of the pew. It will be open till 4 p.m., then the doors will be closed," Bopp said.

The final Latin Mass at the church Sunday will be the last public event. A new site for that weekly gathering is being sought, Staudt said.

"We'll be stronger when this is over," he said.

AP's Top 10 photos of 2012

The AP's award-winning team of hundreds of staff photographers, freelancers and photo editors sends out some 3,000 photos every 24 hours - over 1 million photos a year - to our subscribers around the globe.

How then to sum up an entire year of news in just 10 photos? The very notion is daunting.

Photo editing is a process of comparison and selection. It involves aesthetics and storytelling and impact and memory.

In the end, I chose 10 representative photos, some from the biggest stories of 2012, some for their eye-catching content (and then a broader edit of some 150 news photos to try to capture almost everything else).

In the 10, we see grief over the loss of children in Colorado and Syria. We see children being led to safety from the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. We see a fleet of emblematic New York taxis partially submerged after super storm Sandy. We see President Obama and Mitt Romney facing off in debate. A man sets himself alight in India to protest the situation in Tibet. We also see amazing things; A man leaps from a balloon 38 kilometers (24 miles) above the earth's surface, and a cruise ship floats on its side after running aground of the coast off Italy. A bear falls out of a tree after being tranquilized, and a high-speed underwater camera captures a swimmer plunging into the water at the London Olympics.

The choice of these photos is meant only to represent the broader spectrum of human experiences captured in the other images. Every experience is, in some way, a valid one.

University Hospitals Case Medical Center

As outcomes and quality measurements receive increasing attention in health care delivery today, University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center and Reach Ventures announce the formation of Socrates Analytics, Inc., an innovative software tool that promises to empower health care decision makers to transform data into timely and actionable insights.

Hospitals and physicians are struggling to better understand resource use, cost of care and outcomes, in order to meet the demands of rising care costs. But they are limited by existing administrative and clinical databases that communicate poorly and store information in disparate systems. As a result, the full potential to synthesize this critically important data for driving change in quality and efficiency goes unrealized.

Socrates Analytics, Inc., has the ability to overcome these obstacles by providing hospital administrators with the ability to look across a number of existing data systems, capture entire episodes of care and develop unique care pathways and manage resources across the hospital. A cloud-based software program, Socrates Analytics collects, standardizes, analyzes and reports on disparate hospital billing, administrative and operating room data.

Socrates Analytics was created and developed in 2007 by Conor Delaney, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at UH Case Medical Center, who sought to answer questions such as "What is driving costs in the operating room?" and "What factors are associated with readmissions within 30 days of discharge?".

Dr. Delaney envisioned a way to integrate disparate hospital administrative software systems to facilitate reporting on operational metrics, such as operating room use, hospital bed requirements and length-of-stay, direct and indirect costs, income, the measurement and management of outcomes, and efficiency of care. "Socrates gives hospitals the opportunity to interpret complex administrative data and view trends, outliers and variability in the process, so they can improve their efficiency and terms of care," said Dr. Delaney, who is also Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Michael Szubski, Chief Financial Officer for UH, said, "With government reimbursement policies increasingly holding health care providers financially responsible for inefficient and inappropriate care, Socrates Analytics can create new standards for ensuring quality of care for the benefit of our patients and community. In our use of it, Socrates has helped us continually improve patient care using data-driven analysis. In addition, Socrates will be a powerful tool for advancing clinical and health services research."

Through UH's support and grants from The Cleveland Foundation and the Ohio Savings Foundation, Socrates is poised to support the UH system and other healthcare facilities.

Kendall Wouters, CEO of Reach Ventures said, "With Dr. Delaney's vision realized through the on-going support of University Hospitals and the region, Socrates will help many hospitals visualize their cost structure and make objective, evidence-based decisions to improve their operations while ensuring the highest quality of care."

1,500 China-bound elephant tusks seized

Bazuki Muhammad / Reuters

Malaysian customs officers on Wednesday show elephant tusks smuggled inside wood planks.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Some 1,500 African elephant tusks???the biggest seizure ever ? were found this week hidden within timber planks and destined for China's ivory market. Shocked conservationists noted 2012 will now go down as the worst year in 24 years of records???and warned that 2013 could be even worse.

"In 2011 we thought the threats to elephants couldn't get any worse and 2012 draws to a close with the depressing news that the slaughter of elephants hasn't even drawn close to their zenith," said Jason Bell, who runs the International Fund for Animal Welfare's elephant program. "The illegal trade is simply voracious in its appetite for ivory."

Hidden in 10 crates shipped in two cargo containers, the tusks were found Monday by Malaysian customs officials at the port near Kuala Lumpur. The shipment had come from Togo in West Africa.

The tusks weigh about 20 tons, nearly as much as all that was seized in 2011???a year when an estimated 25,000 elephants were slaughtered for their tusks. For all of 2012, about 34 tons have been seized.

Ivory can fetch up to $1,000 a pound, the World Wildlife Fund said in a new report on poaching of elephants, rhinos and tigers.

"The bloody ivory trade has reached new heights of destruction and depravity in 2012," echoed? Will Travers, head of Born Free USA.?

"No part of Africa is now safe," he added. "Across the continent, for the first time, the number of carcasses recorded as a result of poaching exceeds the number reportedly dying from natural causes."?

The groups worry that the start of Africa's dry season will fuel a new round of poaching in the coming weeks. Since 1979, when Africa still had an estimated 1.3 million elephants, the population has declined to an estimated 450,000 in 2007, according to the group Save the Elephants.

Some 150 armed Sudanese men were seen riding on camels and horses across the Central African Republic a few weeks ago and locals suspect they were looking for elephant herds, according to a report on nationalgeographic.com.

Conservationists fear another massacre like the one in Cameroon earlier this year when some 600 elephants inside a national park?? half the local population???were killed.?

The tusks from that slaughter were never recovered, Bell noted.?

A poaching resurgence has pushed up the price of ivory, resulting in more elephant carnage. But some of the baby elephants orphaned in the wake of such violence will survive -- thanks to the dedication of naturalist Daphne Sheldrick. NBC's Chelsea Clinton reports.

"It is an indication of an illegal industry completely out of control that lawmakers still have no idea where the massive amounts of ivory poached in Cameroon have gone," he said.

The groups urged the international community to fund a protection plan already endorsed by African nations with elephant populations.

Bell said needed actions include "swift DNA identification of seized ivory, so that we know how and where to point our efforts to prevent further poaching and close down transit routes for smuggled ivory."

Related: Religious groups rally to save elephants, rhinos

China's status as an authorized ivory trading nation is also under fire from conservationists, who want it revoked until it can prove that the only ivory traded is from legally authorized stockpiles.

Born Free, for its part, has started an online campaign at?bloodyivory.org?to build public pressure against China.

As for the latest seizure, Malaysian officials did not make any arrests but are investigating a local trading company involved with the shipment. It could face fines and any individuals found guilty of knowingly trading in the tusks could get up to five years in prison, customs officials said.

Your SEO-Related Hard Work Is Going Down The Drain?

When you do business online, you will often use SEO as a method of doing marketing to increase sales from the site. Most of the time, you will find that when this tool is used properly, it becomes very potent and will drastically increase the amount of money that you make from the site. However, when you do a bit of research, you will find that there are a number of people who pay for or do SEO, but then do not get much out of it.

Some may even spend so much time and money trying to do it, but end up making losses instead of profits later on. This is usually a result of not approaching the issue of SEO (and online marketing in general) in the right manner. For you to fully benefit from this tool, you would need to keep a few things in mind. These include:

Always have an anchor when starting the project

One of the greatest mistakes that people make when they are trying to do SEO is not having a defined goal to work towards. For instance, they will simply think about increasing traffic to their sites, and then not consider how they are going to do this in more detail. When you take this kind of approach, you will end up doing a very poor job, since you will have no point of reference to work towards.

If you are to do SEO properly, you will need to first of all try to find out things such as how you are willing to do it in detail. For instance, if you want to use social media, you need to define details such as which sites you are comfortable using as well as what methods you are going to use to achieve your goals. This will make it much easier for you to organize yourself and be poised for success.

Pay attention to how you design your landing page

When you pay for or do SEO, you will effectively be increasing the amount of traffic to your site. Most of the people who you attract will get to the home page first before proceeding to other pages in the site. If the landing page is not of very high quality, you risk losing them altogether, since they will opt to leave the site and try to find information that they need elsewhere.

With this in mind, you should think about your landing page as some kind of reception for your visitors. You need to design it in such a manner that it is appealing to them, and that it will encourage them to stay on the site for longer in order to visit many other pages to do business with you. One thing you should be particularly wary of is the use of promotional content on the landing page. If you use too much of this, you will risk losing the customers. You need to aim to provide informative content that will encourage your readers to find out more about the kinds of goods and services that you offer.

Always test your SEO

Another issue that is very easy to ignore is testing of the methods you use. When you are doing SEO, you need to make sure that you keep tabs on the progress of what you are doing. This is very important since it will give you information on what you are doing wrong, so that you can then rectify it. When your SEO methods do not result in any effect on the site, it could be due to many factors such as the use of outdated SEO methods, the presence of elements such as low quality links in the site or lack of motivation of customers to buy what you have to offer. When you make sure that you constantly put your SEO methods to the test through the use of metrics, you can ensure that you always keep your methods optimized.

In summary, you need to remember that SEO is not something that you can do casually and then expect it to work wonders for you. You need to approach it in a more methodical manner for this to happen. This does not necessarily mean that you have to work with an overly complicated plan. Even the simplest SEO methods can work for you, as long as you keep the above in mind when doing it.

Jada Pinkett Smith On The Problems Facing Women And Men In ...

Jada Pinkett Smith Addresses The Problems Facing Today?s Women And Men In Relationships
Will-Jada-Pinkett-Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith has obvious concerns about the state of relationships between men and women nowadays and has posted a long blog to her?Facebook page?to address them.? In her latest post, Jada talks about how the true inner beauty of a woman over time has taken a backseat to superficiality of ?weaves and?red bottom shoes,? while men use?money?as a status symbol and as a way of buying love. Jada also believes that?women today have no voice and have been reduced to being just pleasure toys. She states that our culture promotes women looking good without saying anything meaningful, and men have become so frustrated with insecurity that it often leads to domestic violence in?the home.? Jada also says if one person in the relationship is lost, then the entire union is doomed because the couple are supposed to balance each other out..

Step into her blog below:

The war on men through the degradation of woman.

How is man to recognize his full self, his full power through the eye?s of an incomplete woman? The woman who has been stripped of Goddess recognition and diminished to a big ass and full breast for physical comfort only. The woman who has been silenced so she may forget her spiritual essence because her words stir too much?thought outside of the pleasure space. The woman who has been diminished to covering all that rots inside of her with weaves and?red bottom shoes.

I am sure the men, who restructured our societies from cultures that honored woman, had no idea of the outcome. They had no idea that eventually, even men would render themselves empty and longing for meaning, depth and connection. There is a deep sadness when I witness a man that can?t recognize the emptiness he feels when he objectifies himself as a bank and truly believes he can buy love with things and status. It is painful to witness the betrayal when a woman takes him up on that offer. He doesn?t recognize that the create of a half woman has contributed to his repressed anger and frustration of feeling he is not enough. He then may love no woman or keep many half women as his prize. He doesn?t recognize that it?s his submersion in the imbalanced warrior culture, where violence is the means of getting respect and power, as the reason he can break the face of the woman who bore him four children.

When woman is lost, so is man. The truth is, woman is the window to a man?s heart and a man?s heart is the gateway to his soul.

Power and control will NEVER out weigh love.

May we all find our way.
J

Deep.

Dick Armey pushes GOP to vote on ?fiscal cliff?, hits tea party

Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, who recently resigned as head of tea party group FreedomWorks, suggested House Speaker John Boehner should put the Republican plan to avoid a "fiscal cliff" to a vote already.

"Take the vote," Armey said Monday in an interview with CBS "This Morning." "If the president has his overwhelming mandate from the American people, the 435 members of Congress will recognize that mandate in their districts, and he'll win the vote. If he wins the vote, then he owns the results, and he can take them to the Senate, which is controlled by his party, sign it into law and live with the consequences."

Boehner is the lead Republican on talks between Republicans and the White House on negotiating a deal to avoid automatic tax increases and spending cuts set to go into effect Jan. 1. Armey defended Boehner's position Monday saying he has the "toughest job" in town.

"He's got a seriously divided majority in the House, he's got a dysfunctional Senate [and] it's questionable whether they can do anything over there," Armey continued, "and they've got a president who says basically, You give me what I want. Once you agree to that, I'll talk to you."

Armey recently cut ties with tea party group FreedomWorks citing displeasure with tea party losses.?On Monday he took the opportunity to bash some of the party's candidates, saying, "We had a lot of candidates quite frankly that did dumb things out there."

But Armey blamed the Republican party, not the movement, for failing to "school" these candidates on avoiding controversial subjects.
