In Home Personal Care: How Far are you willing ... - Elder Care Cafe

One of the most difficult tasks of a family caregiver is when the parent needs personal care. Very few adult children are able or willing to perform the intimate tasks of personal hygiene that will keep their parent clean and healthy. Most of us know how a shower or bath and a clean change of clothes can perk up our attitude and give us a feeling of mental wellbeing. The same good feeling happens when our parent is clean as well.

As people age, they often find it difficult or even impossible to take a bath or shower especially on a daily basis. It also becomes difficult to reach the areas of the body that need to be washed. It can also be difficult to get dressed afterwards. They may be suffering from arthritis or the numerous aches and pains in the joints that many aging seniors must endure. Even the act of getting dressed eventually becomes too difficult.

Adult children find it very difficult to have to see their mother or father naked, let along wash and dry their body and help them get dressed. It can be embarrassing to both the senior and their daughter or son.

One way you can deal with this situation is to remove clothing from their body one area at a time. Wash that area, or help them if they are still able to move their arm or hand, and then dry and cover that are before moving on the next. ? If they have a walk in shower, you can place a bench within the shower and use a handheld shower device to help them wash their body, especially in hard to reach areas. They can often wash their own face, hands and arms.

While you have them in the shower, this is a good time to help them wash their hair and brush their teeth. Trying to brush their teeth standing at a sink can be painful and awkward for them.

If your parent is bedridden, you will have to sponge bathe them using a dishpan of water. Again, you can wash one area at a time leaving the rest of their body covered in order to keep embarrassment at bay.

While active people usually bathe on a daily basis, inactive seniors can go a day or two before they need a full bath. A daily washing or hands, face, and private areas should be adequate in most cases.

Because I am caring for my father, I?ve been able to get help from a local home care agency. We call them Dads? shower gals. Currently they are coming in twice a week ? Monday and Friday ? and giving him a full shower and getting him redressed in clean clothes. What is cool about this agency is that they also clean his bathroom and bedroom and take out the trash. They would clean the whole house if we wanted to pay for that, but I?m able to take care of the rest.

I?ve said right from the start that I do not want to touch my father any more than necessary and I have been sticking to that. There are ways you can get help if you feel the same way about your parent. It?s actually not that expensive considering the alternative.

The other plus for us at this time is that since we joined the PACE program, the in-home care is at no cost to us. You should check on whether such a program is available in your community. It?s a state-wide initiative that helps seniors and their caregivers physically and financially.

Putin eyes trip to Antarctica, shuns elder image

Russian President Vladimir Putin is rejecting the advice of some of his PR specialists to dial back his trademark action-hero persona and instead cultivate the image of a "wise patriarch," according to the pro-government Moscow daily Izvestia.

President Putin, who's now over 60, has insisted on a full slate of his traditional macho stunts this year, including scuba diving, hockey playing, actions to protect endangered animal species, and a possible visit to a science station in Antarctica, Izvestia says.

"Vladimir Putin will continue his active hobbies. Maybe he will go scuba diving in the summer. He continues the fight to preserve endangered species," the paper quotes Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, as saying.

"As for a more 'patriarchal' style? Well, he has his own style, and that's his personal choice," he added.

Putin has been plagued with rumors of ill-health ever since he was seen limping at last September's APEC summit in Vladivostok. The Kremlin reacted indignantly to journalists' questions about his condition ? which only seems to have inflamed the rumor-mill ? and at some point Mr. Peskov conceded that the president was suffering from back pains.

Some pollsters argue that a recent dip in Putin's public approval rating, to about 62 percent from his usual 70 percent or so, might have been due to the uncertainties about his health.

"Putin's rating is down a bit, but it's a small fluctuation and doesn't spell a stable trend," says Alexei Grazhdankin, deputy director of the independent Levada Center in Moscow.

"These fluctuations occur for various reasons, and we attribute the latest dip to rumors about Putin's health. It's logical, because his image has always been based on his robust health and capacity for extreme actions.... I think he will repeat such actions because they confirm his own view that he controls his health much as he controls the country," Mr. Grazhdankin says.

Until recently, Putin had been regularly practicing at nights on a Moscow ice rink with Russian hockey pros ? and occasionally with journalists ? in preparation for what some Moscow sources whisper might be an exhibition game Putin was hoping to hold with other world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

PAST STUNTS

Last September Putin took to the skies in a motorized hang glider to guide a group of endangered Siberian cranes onto their correct migratory flight path.

At other times he has shot a Siberian tiger with a tranquilizer gun, harpooned a grey whale with a crossbow, and tagged a captured polar bear on an Arctic ice flow (all in the interest of science).

According to Izvestia, Putin accepted an invitation from Chilean President Sebastian Pinera during a meeting in the Kremlin last September to visit Chilean and Russian science bases in Antarctica sometime early this year.

Peskov told the newspaper that the date has yet to be decided, "but since Putin is occupied with ecological issues, he will work with this question."

Some professional spin doctors argue that Putin would be wise to go with the flow of advancing age and cultivate a different, more realistic image for himself.

"A good PR specialist should not concoct beautiful lies, but find some merit in the client to focus on, tell people about, to show him in the best possible light," says Stanislav Radkevich, director of PR-3000, a Moscow think tank.

"In Putin's case, it should be connected with positive changes in the country that he has championed.... He needs to develop the image of a wise reformer, a competent leader, who is thinking about the fate of the country," he adds.

ELDER IMAGE? NYET.

But other experts argue that Putin will never accept the image of an aging, sedentary leader.

"At the beginning of his new term there was a lot of talk about how Putin might now be positioned [in the media], because of his age, as a wise man sitting in his study and handing down advice," says Leonid Polyakov, a political scientist with the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.

"Then Putin had a spinal trauma during a training session, and his spokesman confirmed that. His response to that appears to be that he is definitely not going to become the old man in the Kremlin.... I'm absolutely sure we're going to see more of Putin on horseback, jumping by parachute, taming tigers, and so on," he says.

"The explanation is simple. He just likes it. Sport is a way of life, Putin's still in good shape, and he simply can't stop."

Philadelphia Eagles v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

Eagles running back LeSean McCoy has made headlines for his Twitter use before, but there?s a big difference between trash talking with Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and what happened between him and the mother of his son over the weekend.

McCoy lobbed volleys toward the woman, whose Twitter page identifies her only as Steph, in what seemed to be an argument about requests for money. USA Today has some of the tweets from McCoy?s account, which has been deleted, as well as the woman?s replies. Those replies included accusations that McCoy performed a particular sexual act to her to get out of paying child support and that McCoy?s current girlfriend had slept with one of his best friends.

McCoy originally deactivated the account by saying that his account was hacked. It?s a familiar explanation for unsavory content, but McCoy took the unusual step of admitting he made up the hacking story as part of a larger apology for the whole situation.

?In light of the recent events that played out over Twitter this past weekend, I would like to express how deeply sorry and remorseful I am to my family, the?Philadelphia Eagles, my fans, and every young person who views me as a role model. This is not who I am as a person, nor the image I ever wanted to portray of myself. It?s definitely not the example I want to set for my son,? McCoy said in a statement, via CSNPhilly.com. ?My Twitter account was not hacked. I take full responsibility and I apologize for trying to make it seem like it was not me. Due to my bad judgment and frustration, I allowed a very personal matter to be played out on a social network, of all things. It was immature and unprofessional for me to do so and to encourage others to join in.?

Anyone who follows athletes on Twitter can tell the ones who are doing it for themselves and those who are doing it with help as part of developing their ?brand.? The latter approach is boring and inauthentic, but it?s a lot less likely to get you in trouble for flying off the handle in full view of the public.

Tiger Woods starts fast at 2013 Farmers Insurance Open - SB Nation

After sitting out on Saturday, it didn't take long for Tiger Woods to get back on the South Course on Sunday and extend his lead with a quick birdie.

After a one-day postponement, Tiger Woods is now back out on the course at Torrey Pines for the 2013 Farmers Insurance Open. Woods lit up the North Course on Friday to take a two-shot lead at the midpoint of the tournament, but dense fog in the La Jolla area delayed Saturday's third round. A couple players got off the first tee, but the Tour promptly decided to scrap play for the day and schedule golf from sun-up to sundown on Sunday.

More: Can Tiger overcome recent weekend struggles?

And Woods is off to a steady start on Sunday, ripping his driver down the middle of the fairway on the first two holes. After an average approach shot, Woods had 21 feet left on the first green. He easily cleaned up with a two-putt par to stay at 11-under.

On the second hole, however, a perfect drive enabled Tiger to pull wedge for his second shot. He fired a dart to the center of the green, spinning it back to within a foot. With all the rain over the past two days at Torrey Pines, the greens will certainly be receptive on approach shots ? and Woods quickly demonstrated that on the second. After nearly sinking it with the wedge, he strolled up and quickly tapped in his birdie putt to move to 12-under and extend his lead to three shots over Billy Horschel, Josh Teater, and Brad Fritsch.

With 87 players making the cut, it's highly unlikely the tournament is wrapped up on Sunday. The Tour will not re-pair players, so Woods will play with Horschel and Casey Wittenberg during Sunday's march. It's likely he'll still have nine holes to play on a Monday finish. With the way Woods has looked so far, and the relatively underwhelming leaderboard around him, those final nine holes may be a formality on the way to his 75th career win.

Over 100 women attend free breast cancer screening ... - KCBD.com

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The Lubbock area Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate hosted free breast screenings and mammograms from Saturday morning at Cavazos Middle School and experienced a record turnout. Over 100 women turned out to get screened and talk with doctors.

They left wearing t-shirts that read, "I am selfish for my health."

It's a motto that speaks to mothers especially, who often find themselves too busy taking care of their families to focus on their own health and get screened.

Rita Sintas knows that feeling all too well.

"It's important for me because I am a mom. Sometimes it's good to be selfish. You can't take care of anyone else if you don't take care of you," Sintas said. "They gave a demonstration earlier that was right on point. Cancer has no discrimination - age, race, it doesn't matter, so it's just important to come out."

According to the Center for Disease Control, in 2009, the most recent year data is available, 211,731 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer. Of that number, 40,676 died from the disease - about one in every five women.

Dr. Candy Arentz, Medical Director of the UMC Breast Cancer Center, was one of the physicians giving exams. She says it's important to get checked once a year beginning at age 40, or 35 if you have a family history of breast cancer. Arentz said the earlier cancer is detected, the better the chance of saving your life.

"Nobody wants to get a mammogram, but if it's a picture that's going to save your life that takes about 10 minutes to do, it's worth it," Arentz said. "That way, you have the years at the end of your life to be with your family."

New Generation of Video Game Consoles on the Horizon | I Love ...

A new era of gaming is at hand.

playstation 270x179 New Generation of Video Game Consoles on the Horizon

Photo: facebook.com

Following their seventh-generation consoles, the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360, these two technology giants will launch their new eighth-generation gaming devices this year.

The new devices are expected to revolutionize the gaming experience. They?ll have biometric sensors and more accurate motion detectors, as well as the capability to play games that come out of the screen.

The first developments could be known next month, when Sony holds its annual Destination PlayStation event from February 25-28. The new Sony console is being developed under the code name ?Orbis.?

It is also rumored that Microsoft may announce the new Xbox console, being developed under the code name ?Durango,? at the E3 games exhibition taking place this June in Los Angeles.

With increasing competition from Smartphone and tablet gaming, some predict that this generation of home gaming consoles will be the last.

Santa Clarita Short Sales out number current Foreclosures by ...

First ? before I get into our Daily Santa Clarita Foreclosure Alert update, where I display all of the most recent scheduled Auctions, the Notice of Default filings(new), and the Bank owned real estate that is not currently on sale ? I will run through the current ?distressed? inventory for the Santa Clarita Valley Cities.Foreclosure Tours by Santa Clarita REMAX

We did a basic search for the ?active listings? this morning, before the sun came up. ?At the present time we are at 0538am. ?Active listings, are recognized ?active? because they are ?fully? available.

They are 100 percent able to have offers written, to be considered by their sellers. ?For this research I ran through the following Santa Clarita Cities:

  • Castaic
  • Canyon Country
  • Newhall
  • Santa Clarita
  • Saugus
  • Stevenson Ranch
  • Valencia

I then did my pull of inventory directly from the Santa Clarita Board of Realtors ? Multiple Listing Service. ?When I did I was reminded that the Short Sale listings, in the Santa Clarita Valley, are still the majority of our For Sale market?s ?distressed type? of active listings.

A Side Note ? when you go to search other than Local Santa Clarita real estate websites(like the syndication websites) ? you are going to see many more listings that appear as if they are for sale. ?However, they are not. ?There is no ?extra database? or ?secret search? with listings that are only available from certain websites. ?The actual listings are all contained within the Local Board of Realtors that?governs?the local city, municipality, or geographical area.

Searching on the local websites that pull their data from the actual Multiple Listing service is the only way the ?real estate interested? can guarantee they are seeing homes that are really for sale.

Here are the current numbers as they relate to the following categories within the current real estate listings. ?Please pay strict attention to the Bank Owned real estate versus the Short Sale inventory.

  • Standard real estate listings in SCV: ?171
  • In Foreclosure Listings, not necessarily short sales: ?2*
  • Notice of Default, different category ? short sale: ?5*
  • Real Estate Owned: ?18
  • Short Pay?s Subject to lender approval: ?33
  • 1 probate listing
  • 1 auction
  • HUD owned: ?0

*Because some agents choose one of the three categories that can be considered as a property is in Short Sale, but not necessarily in Default with their lender, the actual numbers of currently active short sales that are on the Santa Clarita real estate market will be considered as 40.

40 real estate listings that are Short Sales ? Versus 18 bank owned real estate listings? ?Amazing ? when you view the Standard Sales ? those have experienced a HUGE jump lately. ?With those real estate buyers that had purchased back in 2008-2009 being in an equity position today, they are getting the intel and selling to move up the real estate ladder.

Be safe ? please get good advice and let The Paris911 Team know when you need our help.

Types Of Gold Individual Retirement Account Invest | Liberty

Individuals who have some other retirement options can also join the retirement gold plan. It?s a quick transfer process from the standard plans. A rollover, on the other hand, is done when the employee separates from the agency?s retirement plan. The payments are rolled over from a retirement plan to an individual retirement account that?s self-directed.

An IRA involves payments which can be subject to taxes. If you are withdrawing from the individual retirement account, the assets are usually turned into cash which is subject to taxes as income tax. If withdrawing from the retirement gold option, you have 2 alternatives of getting it. The first is by turning the gold into cash and making payment on the tax. The other is by acquiring the gold bullion coins to liquidate in the future. The second alternative requires you to pay the taxes of the current value of the coin and 28% capital gains when selling them.

All the info you may need regarding the retirement gold plan is available on different online resources. There are other experts who train people and present them the best information prior to investing in this plan. One should read the agreements and know all the guidelines before getting into the plan.

You?ll certainly need assistance if you want to transfer a 401k account into gold. This process necessitates the help of specialists. For more details, kindly visit http://iratogold.net

FTC study taking aim at online marketing of booze

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) plans this summer to recommend ways that the alcoholic beverage industry can better protect underage viewers from seeing its advertisements online.

Distillers, brewers and wineries pour millions of dollars into brand promotion on Twitter, Facebook and other social media, and industry critics contend they are not doing enough to prevent young consumers from receiving these messages.

"We're doing a deep dive on how they're using the Internet and social media," said Janet Evans, a lawyer with the FTC, which is conducting a year-long study due to be released by early summer. "We're focusing on underage exposure."

She would not elaborate on any potential recommendations that might come out of the study, which began in April 2012.

The FTC is reviewing data from 14 big producers, Evans said, including Beam Inc, the maker of Jim Beam, Diageo Plc, home to Johnnie Walker, and Constellation Brands Inc, which makes Robert Mondavi and Ravenswood wines.

The FTC report "is something we take seriously and place at high priority," said Karena Breslin, director for digital marketing at Constellation.

The FTC has made two requests for information since the study began, she said.

The regulatory agency has not said it intends to impose restrictions on liquor company social media advertising but it can make recommendations to the industry.

The FTC is empowered to file suit to ensure consumers are protected from deceptive marketing practices, Evans said, but she stressed that studies of this nature are meant to promote better self-regulation, not provide a basis for a case.

Industry executives say alcohol makers and distributors voluntarily adhere to the same industry-set standard for marketing to underage viewers on social media sites that the industry set for its ads on TV and other media. That requires that at least 71.6 percent of an audience consists of adults 21 and older.

"No one in their right mind would want to advertise to people who can't legally buy their product," said Frank Coleman, senior vice president for Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS), the trade group that sets the industry's advertising codes.

Coleman also cited recent data showing the audiences for Facebook and Twitter are skewed heavily towards viewers who are above the legal drinking age.

"According to Nielsen's latest data, the demographic audience for Facebook is 83.5 percent 21 years and older, and for Twitter it is 85 percent," Coleman said.

In June 2011, DISCUS revised its code upwards to 71.6 percent from 70 percent, after the FTC recommended it review the standard to better reflect U.S. Census population data.

Industry critics, including David Jernigen, director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth at Johns Hopkins University, and Sarah Mart, research director of the advocacy group Alcohol Justice, contend the industry didn't go far enough and should raise the standard further.

Jernigen said it needs to be at least 85 percent to effectively protect youth, so there would be no more than 15 percent exposure to the underage drinking population.

"The industry says its self-regulating but it's ineffective and social media opens up a whole new set of problems because their ads are everywhere," said Mart.

Coleman said the group now requires members to install age-checking tools via instant messaging as a gateway to Twitter feeds and other branded Web platforms that ask the user for a birth date before admitting them.

In the first nine months of 2012, beer, wine and spirits manufacturers spent an estimated $35 million for paid Web display advertising, but industry executives estimate many millions more were spent on website creation, video production for platforms like Google's YouTube and social media marketing efforts.

"We've significantly adjusted more money to digital for online video, websites, Facebook and Twitter content," said Kevin George, global chief marketing officer for Jim Beam, which spends 30 percent of its media spend for online outlets, up from 10 percent in 2008, he said.

Many companies are expanding their digital staff. Wine maker Constellation hired Breslin three years ago to initiate digital marketing and now has a team of five reporting to her.

Many alcoholic beverage companies flocked to Facebook because it requires users to post their birth dates when signing up.

Last year Twitter partnered with Buddy Media to offer a screening tool that sends a direct message to fans who click on an alcoholic brand. The message sends the fan a link to a site that asks for date of birth.

Salesforce.com bought Buddy Media last June, which is now folding the platform into its marketing cloud portfolio.

Health advocates and industry critics are crying foul. "Facebook and other interactive platforms are poorly monitored and not well age-protected," said Jernigen of Johns Hopkins University. "Anyone can say they're 21 and click yes."

Dear Tim Cook, The Retina Display Is Great But It?s Not The Best

Screen Shot 2013-01-23 at 5.54.42 PM“iPhone 5 offers a new 4 inch retina display, which is the most advanced display in the industry,” said Tim Cook. “No one comes close to matching the quality of the Retina Display.” He is, of course, obligated to both say and believe this despite the fact there are plenty of displays already available and forthcoming that surpass the iPhone 5′s Retina display. Now, when we’re talking about size, there are various schools of thought on what works best. But Apple has stayed strong with the 4-inch iPhone 5′s one-handed usability, after years of refusing to budge from the 3.5-inch screen size. “We put a lot of thinking into screen size and think we’ve picked the right one,” said the CEO. Cook explained that the iPhone 5 managed to offer a larger Apple-flavored display “without sacrificing the one-handed ease of use that our customers love.” It’s true enough, to him at least, for Apple to put out a whole commercial on it. It’s called Thumb. It’s cute. But with all due respect: To think that the iPhone 5 (like the iPhone 4 of yester-year) has the best display on the market is a little naive. Since size is based entirely on opinion, there’s no need to delve into that. But when it comes to pixel density and display technology, a 326ppi LCD screen doesn’t really compete with the brand new stuff coming out of the Android pen. Consider the 5-inch 1080p SLCD3 display on the Droid DNA, with 440ppi. It’s already available, and getting rave reviews. Then there’s the Xperia Z, from Sony. It hasn’t been released yet, so we haven’t played with it extensively, but some hands-on time at CES proves that Sony, too, is capable of a stunning 1080p 5-inch display, topping out at 440ppi. The LG Optimus G Pro, not yet announced, is also said to have a 5-inch 1080p display. But HTC, LG, and Sony aren’t primary concerns for Apple. Samsung, on the other hand, is one to watch, and the latest rumors suggest the Korean firm’s flagship Galaxy S IV will have a 5-inch 440 ppi display, too. And that one will feature Samsung’s premium Super AMOLED screen. Regardless of competition, though, the question is whether or not Apple will push along with everyone else and bump up size and/or pixel density in the coming generations of the iPhone. Tax for internet companies | Stuff.co.nz

REUTERS AND TOM PULLAR-STRECKER

The French Government is preparing a new law that would change the way internet giants such as Google and Amazon are taxed in France, according to a French media report.

Citing a French finance ministry report entitled Taxation of the Digital Economy, newspaper Les Echos said the government would seek to tax the user data that web companies collected in the course of their businesses.

New Zealand Revenue Minister Peter Dunne last month ordered Inland Revenue to back the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in its effort to stamp out rampant tax avoidance by multinationals operating principally in the digital economy.

Notre Dame official explains not disclosing hoax

(AP) ? A Notre Dame spokesman says the university decided against disclosing the hoax against Manti Te'o immediately after an investigation commissioned by the school confirmed it because they didn't think it would be in the best interest of the teams playing in the BCS championship game or the individuals involved.

University spokesman Dennis Brown tells the South Bend Tribune in a story Sunday (http://bit.ly/YgO3aU) that some school administrators thought they should release what they knew about the hoax when they became aware of it.

The hoax about Te'o's "dead" girlfriend became public Wednesday when it was reported by Deadspin.com. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said after the news broke that Te'o and his family had intended to disclose the hoax, saying he believed they intended to do so on Jan. 21.

Asian tycoons near final battle in war for Singapore's F&N

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Thailand's third-richest man has raised his stake and takeover offer for Fraser and Neave Ltd to fend off a bid by a group led by Indonesian tycoon Stephen Riady as the battle for the Singapore property and drinks group draws towards a close.

Thai billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi appears to have the advantage going into a formal auction that begins on Monday to decide the fate of the 130-year-old company, which sold its prized Tiger Beer brand to Heineken NV for S$5.6 billion ($4.56 billion) last year.

The Thai gambit values F&N at nearly $11.3 billion and puts the pressure on a consortium led by Riady's Singapore-listed property firm Overseas Union Enterprise Ltd to counter the offer or withdraw from Southeast Asia's largest-ever corporate acquisition.

"This has extended Charoen's advantage. He has an upper hand over OUE because he's only about 10 percent away from gaining majority control of F&N," said Goh Han Peng, an analyst at DMG & Partners Securities in Singapore.

Monday's auction was triggered because neither bidder had declared a final offer by a deadline on Sunday set by Singapore's Securities Industry Council.

Thailand's TCC Assets Ltd, headed by Charoen, raised its offer last week to S$9.55 a share, above the S$9.08 bid by the Overseas Union-led consortium. F&N shares rose 1.4 percent to S$9.71 in early trade on Monday.

Charoen acquired an additional 90.8 million shares, or a 6.3 percent stake in F&N, at S$9.55 each on Friday and another 2.2 million shares on Saturday.

The move raised his total stake - held through TCC Assets Ltd and Thai Beverage PLC - to 40.6 percent including acceptances. Charoen's previous offer was S$8.88 per share.

The offers by Charoen and the Overseas Union group are conditional on getting more than 50 percent of F&N. If Charoen wins, F&N will have to pay a break fee of up to S$50 million to the Overseas Union group.

DRINKS AND PROPERTY

F&N has a property portfolio worth more than S$8 billion and soft drinks, dairy and publishing businesses. It sold Tiger Beer to Dutch brewing giant Heineken in September.

F&N's independent financial advisor JP Morgan has said its sum-of-the-parts valuation is S$8.58 to S$11.56 per share.

In the auction, each side can revise its offer by a minimum of one Singapore cent per share once a day. The revision must be unconditional and in cash.

The process will continue until neither side revises its offer or the securities watchdog stops the auction.

Forbes says Charoen is worth $6.2 billion. His rival, Riady, is also president of the Lippo group founded by his father Mochtar Riady.

Charoen has extended the deadline of his previous offer seven times and the Overseas Union group twice. The multiple extensions have tested the patience of F&N shareholders.

Kirin Holdings Co Ltd , F&N's second-biggest shareholder with a stake of around 14.8 percent, has given its conditional support to the Overseas Union group.

The Japanese brewer will offer to buy F&N's food and beverage business for S$2.7 billion if the Overseas Union group's bid is successful. JP Morgan's valuation of that unit is S$1.88 billion to S$3.82 billion.

If Charoen wins control of F&N, analysts say he is likely to use F&N's distribution network in Singapore and Malaysia to sell his other products and to market F&N brands in Thailand, where he already has an edge.

Turbines are providing energy for businesses, City of Gloucester

Gloucester was able to start the New Year with a new source of energy, and a new look to its skyline.

So far it?s been a success story on all fronts.

The goal was to have the two turbines located on the site of Gloucester Engineering completely assembled and functional before the end of December; both of the 400-foot structures were completed on the last day of 2012, and added a second and third turbine to the one erected just a few months earlier on the site of Varian Semiconductor.

While the Varian turbine will provide power for the Gloucester-based business, the twin turbines will benefit Gloucester Engineering by providing the company with electricity, and the city will benefit from net metering credits earned from the use of the turbines, resulting in a boost to the city?s economy.

Most of the feedback from the community regarding the turbines has been positive.

?The news is surprisingly good on that front,? says Gloucester Clean Energy Commission Chairman Candace Wheeler. ?I talked with the Mayor [Carolyn Kirk], and she received one call from somebody on Green Street, and they expressed that when the wind is blowing in a certain direction, they could hear the turbines. That?s the only call we?ve gotten in terms of complaints about the noise or shadows, or those types of things. At the moment, public perception has been positive.?

Additionally, there have been few complications with the new turbines so far.

?They?ve had some fine-tuning type things they had to do, but that?s typical for any start-up, as you get to know the conditions and the machinery,? says Wheeler. ?So far, they?ve worked very, very well.?

With that in mind, there are some days where the turbines aren?t spinning at all. There are a few reasons as to why that might be happening.

?One small part of it is the occasional fine-tuning and calibrating they?re doing,? says Wheeler. ?They have to stop them to make adjustments, and check into them.

The strength of the wind also determines when the turbines are operational.

?They cannot operate below seven miles-per-hour of wind,? says Wheeler. ?So, if it?s a very light day, they aren?t operating. Anything below that level, and they?re unable to generate energy. When the wind is over 50 miles per hour, they are shut down for safety reasons.?

Additionally, there are certain times throughout the year when the turbines are shut down due to language in the operating permit in hopes of avoiding what?s considered ?flickering? ? when shadows of a rotating blade repeatedly pass across a window or over an object, creating a flickering effect.

?There are provisions built into the terms of the permit that require them to shut down a very small number of days and hours per year when the sun?s angle would create a flicker problem in any abutting neighborhood,? says Wheeler. ?This will be for small periods of time over the course of the year.?

Residents may also have noticed instances when one of the Gloucester Engineering turbines is operating, but the one next to it is not; this occurs when both turbines are in the same direct line of wind.

?The reason for that is that the first turbine creates a wake that would disturb the operation of the other one for that period of time,? explains Wheeler. ?Some of the time there will only be one of the two Gloucester Engineering turbines operational, and that will be the reason. The Varian turbine is set far enough away that it?s not an issue; so, you could expect some days where the Varian and only one Gloucester Engineering turbine is operational. There is computer software in place that shuts down the turbine experiencing that turbulence.?

There has been no official measurement of energy production so far, but an output station that clearly displays this type of information is in the offing. It is estimated that together, the two turbines will generate 10-11 million kilowatt hours per year, roughly the amount that Gloucester?s municipal buildings and facilities consume each year. The more energy generated by the turbines, the more net metering credits ? incentives provided by various state-based sources to individuals and organizations that invest in renewable energy ? the city can earn and put toward the budget.

?They still have not installed an output station console to let you see what?s happening, but they plan to do that, and were also thinking they might try to coordinate with the Gloucester schools so students can watch the amount of power that?s generated,? Wheeler said.

Retailers taking tech battle for shoppers to next level

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The store of the future has arrived and it is threatening to leave technology laggards behind.

The modern store is equipped with cameras that look at you, guess your tastes based on your gender, age and behavior, and send deals to your smart phone accordingly. It also has the technology to reduce endless check-out lines and speed up the process for picking up something ordered online.

The deal-sending screen, by Intel Corp and used by Sears Holdings Corp and others, was just one example of cutting edge technology on display at this week's National Retail Federation conference in New York, showcasing the innovations retailers are trying out as they fight for shoppers.

New technology can help retailers know their customers' habits and preferences better and further integrate physical stores and e-commerce to make the most of the online sales boom.

"It's anticipating what the consumer wants," Don Kingsborough, the executive overseeing the push of EBay Inc's PayPal online payment processor into physical stores, said at the NRF convention.

To succeed, technology has to bridge the chasm between how people shop online, in stores and on their mobile devices, with more customers now doing all three simultaneously, he said.

Wall Street sees success in this area as a decisive factor in who will thrive in a tight retail environment: The NRF this week said U.S. retail sales rose 3 percent during the 2012 holiday season, below its forecast of a 4.1 percent gain.

U.S. retailers are expected to increase technology spending 1.4 percent this year even as they cut 0.7 percent from total capital investments such as store renovations, according to Citi analyst Deborah Weinswig.

According to Forrester Research, U.S. retailers with 5,000 employees or more spent $19.8 billion on technology in 2012.

Those retailers have an overwhelming array of technology to choose from, as evidenced by the 500 or so companies exhibiting at the NRF event, which drew 27,500 attendees.

The recent payroll tax increase means many U.S. shoppers are taking home less money, upping the stakes for retailers, particularly those catering to middle class shoppers, Weinswig said.

"They're going to need to get the shopper in the store, they're going to need to get the shopper to read their e-mail," Weinswig said.

Nordstrom Inc, Saks Inc and Macy's Inc each have spent tens of millions of dollars in recent years to integrate stores into their e-commerce to speed delivery and improve inventory management. A Citi report this week gave those three top marks for using technology, along with Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

"Historically, retailers have had very 'silo'-ed inventory and they have not known as much about the customer as they wanted to," said Eddie Capel, president and CEO of Manhattan Associates, whose clients include Macy's and J. Crew.

Struggling chains such as J.C. Penney Co Inc see technology as essential to improving sales. Penney is far along in a project to tag all its items with radio-frequency identification devices (RFID) so it can track them as it moves to one day eliminating cash registers and allow self-checkouts.

SMART SCREENS

Adidas AG is expanding its use of screens in stores to display hundreds of shoes on a "virtual wall," helping it compete with rival Nike Inc.

Shoppers who use the screens often trade up to higher-priced shoes, spending as much as 60 to 70 euros ($79.80 to $93.10) more in a purchase than planned, said Chris Aubrey, Adidas AG's director of commercial experience.

Several companies at the NRF show hawked devices they said can help retailers get sales staff to better roam the floor.

To be sure, in the race to catch up to Amazon.com, eBay and other e-commerce leaders, retailers must guard against turning off shoppers with technology that is "cool" but ultimately too invasive, such as facial recognition that tells them exactly who just walked in.

"Shoppers will tell us quickly, 'No'," Jon Stine, director of the retailer and consumer products practice at Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group.

Still, intense competition leaves retailers with little choice but to push forward to keep up with consumers.

After the collapse in consumer spending that followed the financial panic in 2008, companies pulled back on technology spending, said Diana McHenry, director for global retail product marketing at SAS, a provider of business intelligence software.

But now the risk of falling behind for good is making them focus on bigger, longer-term projects.

"It's like seeing new construction," McHenry said.

The Biggest Advantage Small Businesses Have Today | Constant ...

When you?re a small business, you have one distinct advantage over the big guys: customer relationships.

Every time you?re talking with a customer in store, emailing someone who has a question, or answering the phone, you?re building a relationship. The odds are good that you know the name of your customers and what they like. You may even know a bit about their personal lives.

It?s almost impossible for bigger companies to establish the same connection with customers (that?s why those that do really stand out).

In the days of social media and the ultra-connected customer, your ability to build relationships can be the biggest advantage you have.

Let?s take a look at why that is:

1. Your business has a personality

You have a personality.

When you allow your personality into your business, it separates you from the competition and allows people the opportunity to connect with you.

Everything from the set-up of your store to your Facebook Page is going to reflect that.

That?s what compels people to return to small businesses in the first place. People like to do business with those they know, like, and trust.

Sure, convenience and prices are factors in their purchasing decision, but keep in mind that a great experience is also a deciding factor.

In fact, a 2011 Accenture Survey found that service experience and brand awareness (your company?s personality!) are the top factors for customers making a purchase, not price.

So, ask yourself:

  • How do I show the personality of my business across all points of contact? (I.e. in store, on my website, in my emails, etc.)
  • How can I use my personality to create a memorable?or Wow!?experience for my customers?

2. You know your customers

You know your customers in a way that big businesses don?t. If someone tweets you, you may know who they are. If they call the store, you probably know their name.

Your customers will remember their interactions with you, whether it was virtually or face-to-face. If it was a good interaction, they?ll tell friends about it and they?ll keep coming back.

You can take that relationship to the next level by asking:

  • How can I give my customers recommendations that suit their individual needs?
  • What kinds of discounts and deals can I offer that I know my customers will like?
  • How do I market my business to the customers I already know, so I can keep them coming back and get people with similar interests coming to my store?

3. You can build relationships that last

A lot of your customers are coming to you because they genuinely like your business, and the more times they come back, the more likely they are to become your most loyal fans.

You?re in charge of making sure that your business flourishes and having long-lasting relationships can be the most important part of that growth.

Small businesses know that repeat customers and loyalty are the best parts of having relationships in the first place. You get to know your customers and they become personally invested in your business.

So, ask yourself:

  • How do I make sure that my relationships with customers last?
  • What do I do to reward customers who keep coming back?
  • How can I continue to build those relationships?

The next steps

The odds are good that you already have great relationships with your customers.

Continue to focus on those relationships. You?ll find that your current customers are your best source of new business, because they end up marketing your business for you through word-of-mouth.

Of couse, you may have noticed word-of-mouth has been rapidly changing over the past decade thanks to social media and mobile devices.

Tune in tomorrow to see how it?s changed, why it?s more powerful than ever before, and how your relationships are going to help you spread the word about your business.

?What are your thoughts on customer relationships? What role do they play in your business?

Life possible on extrasolar moons

Jan. 10, 2013 ? In their search for habitable worlds, astronomers have started to consider exomoons, or those likely orbiting planets outside the solar system. In a new study, a pair of researchers has found that exomoons are just as likely to support life as exoplanets.

The research, conducted by Ren? Heller of Germany's Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam and Rory Barnes of the University of Washington and the NASA Astrobiology Institute, will appear in the January issue of Astrobiology.

About 850 extrasolar planets -- planets outside the solar system -- are known, and most of them are sterile gas giants, similar to Jupiter. Only a few have a solid surface and orbit their host stars in the habitable zone, the circumstellar belt at the right distance to potentially allow liquid surface water and a benign environment.

Heller and Barnes tackled the theoretical question whether such planets could host habitable moons. No such exomoons have yet been discovered but there's no reason to assume they don't exist.

The climatic conditions expected on extrasolar moons will likely differ from those on extrasolar planets because moons are typically tidally locked to their planet. Thus, similar to Earth's moon, one hemisphere permanently faces the planet. Beyond that moons have two sources of light -- that from the star and the planet they orbit -- and are subject to eclipses that could significantly alter their climates, reducing stellar illumination. "An observer standing on the surface of such an exomoon would experience day and night in a totally different way than we do on Earth." explained Heller. "For instance stellar eclipses could lead to sudden total darkness at noon."

Heller and Barnes also identified tidal heating as a criterion for exomoon habitability. This additional energy source is triggered by a moon's distance to its host planet; the closer the moon, the stronger tidal heating. Moons that orbit their planet too closely will undergo strong tidal heating and thus a catastrophic runaway greenhouse effect that would boil away surface water and leave them forever uninhabitable.

They also devised a theoretical model to estimate the minimum distance a moon could be from its host planet and still allow habitability, which they call the "habitable edge." This concept will allow future astronomers to evaluate the habitability of extrasolar moons. "There is a habitable zone for exomoons, it's just a little different than the habitable zone for exoplanets," Barnes said.

The exquisite photometric precision of NASA's Kepler space telescope now makes the detection of a Mars- to Earth-sized extrasolar moon possible, indeed imminent. Launched in 2009, the telescope enabled scientists to reveal thousands of new extrasolar planet candidates. Since 2012 the first dedicated "Hunt for Exomoons with Kepler" is under way.

Wall Street dips as earnings season begins

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks were little changed at the open on Tuesday as an earnings season expected to show sluggish corporate growth gets under way.

Profits in the fourth quarter are seen above the previous quarter's lackluster results, but analysts' current estimates are down sharply from where they were in October. Quarterly earnings are expected to grow by 2.8 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

If earnings growth appears to be "less bad" than expected that would translate into a near-term uptick in the market, according to Eric Wiegand, senior portfolio manager at U.S. Bank Wealth Management in New York.

"But I think there's still ample areas for concern," he said, listing policy worries in Washington and uneven economic activity as a result of Superstorm Sandy during last quarter.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 40.65 points, or 0.30 percent, to 13,343.64. The S&P 500 <.spx> lost 4.28 points, or 0.29 percent, to 1,457.61. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 5.04 points, or 0.16 percent, to 3,093.78.

German data showed industrial orders fell more than forecast in November due to a sharp drop in demand from abroad, reinforcing concerns that Europe's largest economy may have contracted in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Monsanto Co shares rose 3.2 percent to $99.05 after hitting a more than four-year high at $99.99. The world's largest seed company raised its earnings outlook for fiscal 2013 and posted strong first-quarter results.

Education provider Apollo Group and Dow component Alcoa Inc , the largest U.S. aluminum producer, round out the start of earnings season after the closing bell.

Shares of restaurant-chain operator Yum Brands Inc fell 4.6 percent to $64.78 a day after the KFC parent warned sales in China, its largest market, shrank more than expected in the fourth quarter.

London-traded Vodafone shares rose almost 2 percent after its partner in U.S. joint venture Verizon Wireless said it would be "feasible" to buy out the British group. U.S.-traded Vodafone stock fell 1.5 percent.

Sears Holdings shares fell 1.4 percent to $42.31 a day after the company said its chief executive will step down for family health reasons. The U.S. retailer also reported a 1.8 percent decline in quarter-to-date sales at stores open at least a year.

GameStop shares fell 7.1 percent to $23 after it reported sales for the holiday season and cut its guidance.
