NFL, MLB players reporting more daytime sleepiness get cut or retire early at rates higher than league averages

DARIEN, IL Coaches, owners and fantasy-league traders take note: Sleep researcher W. Christopher Winter, MD, has uncovered a link between a pro athlete's longevity and the degree of sleepiness experienced in the daytime.

Winter is presenting two studies today at SLEEP 2012 that associate the career spans of baseball and football players with their voluntary answers on a sleepiness questionnaire. The results show that less sleepy football players tended to remain with their drafting NFL teams after college. In addition, attrition rates for sleepier baseball players trended higher than MLB averages.

"A team's ability to accurately judge a prospect or a potential trade in terms of the value they will get for that player is what makes or breaks many professional sport teams," said Winter, principal investigator of the studies and the sleep advisor for Men's Health magazine. "These studies demonstrate that a simple evaluation of sleepiness may be a powerful tool to add to the list of tests athletes already undergo, such as the Wonderlic Cognitive Abilities Test and the 40-yard dash."

The football study looked at 55 randomly selected college players who landed in the NFL, finding that sleepier athletes only had a 38 percent chance of staying with the team that originally drafted them. In comparison, 56 percent of the less sleepy players were considered a "value pick" because they did stay with the original team. The baseball study analyzed the sleepiness scale of 40 randomly selected baseball players and found that players who reported higher levels of daytime sleepiness also had attrition rates of 57 percent to 86 percent, well above the 30 - 35 percent MLB average.

Winter said measuring sleepiness could do more for a team than help it decide who to draft. "Addressing sleepiness in players and correcting the underlying issues causing sleepiness may help to prolong a player's career," he said.

Winter and his colleagues at Martha Jefferson Hospital Sleep Medicine Center and CNSM Consulting in Charlottesville, Va., used the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), a short questionnaire that can be helpful in detecting excessive daytime sleepiness. EDS is a common symptom of many sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea.

The abstracts "Sleepiness as a predictor of draft value in the National Football League" and "Sleepiness as a predictor of player longevity within Major League Baseball" are being presented today at SLEEP 2012, the 26th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS) in Boston.

PFT: Vick says his Top 100 ranking 'a joke'

anthony-hargroveGetty Images

Last week?s ruling from Stephen Burbank in Bounty Grievance No. 2 gave Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove a glimmer of hope.? On Monday, Burbank snuffed it out completely.

Burbank has ruled, a week after retaining jurisdiction over Hargrove?s grievance, that the attempt to shift the case away from Commissioner Roger Goodell should be rejected because Hargrove?s eight-game suspension arose in no way from potential salary-cap violations.

The outcome should come as no surprise, given that Burbank?s initial decision supplied the league office with a road map for slamming the door on the argument that Goodell lacks jurisdiction to impose penalties for cap violations against Hargrove.? The league needed only to specify that Hargrove wasn?t being punished for receiving extra money for inflicting injury, and the league accomplished that fairly easy feat via a letter sent to Hargrove on June 8.

?This letter attributes the ?vast majority of [Mr. Hargrove?s] eight-game suspension to [his] lying . . . and obstruction? and the ?balance . . . to [his] active participation in the program by pledging and contributing money to the pool,? Burbank writes.? ?The June 8 letter goes on to state that Mr. Hargrove?s ?suspension was not attributable to any agreement on your part to accept payments from the pool or to any moneys that you may have received from the pool.??

Of course, there?s a chance that the discipline was at least in part based on Hargrove receiving money for inflicting injury, especially since Hargrove was believed to be one of the players who was in line to get paid for banging the bejeepers out of Brett Favre in the 2009 NFC title game.? Indeed, the original letter sent to Hargrove said nothing about the player being disciplined for pledging or contributing money to the bounty program, even though the substantially similar letters sent to the other three players use such language.

But with Burbank?s initial ruling making it clear that all the NFL needed to do was clearly state that Hargrove wasn?t being suspended for getting paid to injure Favre or anyone else, it was a quick and easy fix for the league office, which allowed Burbank to in turn make quick and easy work of Hargrove?s grievance.

The NFLPA previously has said that an appeal will be filed on behalf of Hargrove and the three other players whose grievances were dismissed by Burbank:? Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, Saints defensive end Will Smith, and Browns linebacker Scott Fujita.? That appeal most likely will not delay the appeal hearing on the bounty suspensions, which will be conducted by Goodell on Monday, June 18.

The Amateur Family Historian: Family Tree Rebuild Update - 6/10/11

All main branches have been entered back to the earliest ancestor listed in the family histories for that line as shown in my original family tree rebuild post?here.

I am sourcing information from?A Genealogical History of the Kolb, Kulp, or Culp Family for individuals also listed in?A Genealogical History of the Hunsicker Family. Once I have completed this I will begin sourcing all of the original documents I have plus documents I can easily acquire from places such as Ancestry.com.

As I have added the information from the various family histories I have noticed that even though the source is original (despite the fact that I have copies that have been reproduced either on paper or electronically (or both)) I have come to realize that the information is secondary (not primary) in that the authors were reporting second hand information that they found in their research without citing the source. Therefore, until I find a primary source or several different secondary sources (not another family history) of information I will consider these facts as unproven.?

Seton Hall University goes big with Lumia 900 - Nokia Conversations

?Seton Hall University

Seton Hall University, located in New Jersey, is announcing a new component of the University?s Mobile Computing Initiative, which has been providing students with laptop computers since 1997.

Starting this Fall, all incoming freshmen will receive a Nokia Lumia 900 each for extensive use across the University. As a part of the initiative, the Lumia 900 will be used to give the students state of the art technology and a way to connect inside and outside the classroom.?

Why Seton Hall leaders chose the Lumia 900

When I asked?David Middleton, Executive Director of the Center for Mobile Research and Innovation at Seton Hall, why they chose the Nokia Lumia 900 for this huge Initiative, he said the choice was simple.?

After surveying the competitive landscape, Seton Hall wanted a phone that was solidly built (to stand up to the abuse a college student is capable of providing) and would offer an extension of their existing campus IT infrastructure:

The Lumia 900 was the logical choice for our project as it provides deep integration with our Microsoft infrastructure, critical native academic (Office) and social applications (People Hub, live tiles) and extensive multimedia consumption and creation tools in a high quality form factor on the fastest cellular network.

The University already has an existing partnership with Microsoft and having the capable Lumia 900 can extend existing Windows services into the pockets and hands of incoming freshman.

Connecting freshman before they step foot on campus

In addition to the Lumia 900 hardware, Seton Hall students will have access to SHUMobile, an app that provides campus news feeds and maps. The app will be customized for new batch of incoming Seton Hall students with a Freshman Experience component that will have social media integration and direct communication channels with freshman peers.

SHUMobile

?The idea is to connect incoming freshman before they come on campus in the Fall?, says Middleton. In the application, freshman can connect with other classmates, peer advisers and roommates, as they first meet at Freshman orientation in the early Summer.

Additionally, the University will leverage Nokia Data Gathering, recently made available for Windows Phone to communicate with the incoming freshmen beginning this summer by conducting polls, providing information to help students prepare for college and to learn how the Lumia 900 device and other technologies are being used.

Meanwhile back on Seton Hall campus, AT&T is working hard to make sure the 4G network is seamless.?

A fantastic partnership for enterprise productivity

Seton Hall?s Mobile Computing Initiative utilizes the best of Nokia, Microsoft and AT&T?s offerings to create a seamless, connected experience for the class of 2016.

As a bonus, Seton Hall Freshman will?receive?pre-paid service on AT&T that will get them through the Fall?semester?with fast 4G speeds and 24-hour access to friends, classmates and campus-focused materials in the SHUMobile app.

I don?t know about you, but I?m feeling pretty jealous of those Seton Hall freshman. Are you sending your college student off with a smartphone this coming school year?
