Mars Rover's Twitter Feed Displays Bravura, Plus Cheek

Two days after NASA's rover Curiosity landed on Mars, comedian Steve Martin joked on Twitter that he was launching his own Mars mission to upstage NASA.

"I sneezed on it before blast off. I hope that's okay," he wrote Aug. 8.

Curiosity's cheeky response: "Oh, Steve. That's snot ok. We have rules about that." The tweet linked to a website on NASA's planetary protection rules, which aim to prevent other worlds from being contaminated by Earth microbes.

In general, the @MarsCuriosityTwitter feed strives for a tone of bravura befitting the biggest and best rover ever sent to the Red Planet, said Veronica McGregor, one of three voices in what NASA calls the "hive mind" behind the account. McGregor, Stephanie L. Smith and Courtney O'Connor carefully craft the voice of Curiosity to broadcast to its more than 1.1 million followers, including the celebrities who tweet at it, ranging from Britney Spears to Richard Branson. [Curiosity Team Spoofed In Hilarious Viral Video]

The Curiosity Facebook pagealso saw its audience expand tenfold in the week after landing, to 337,000 "likes."

"We hoped it would get big," McGregor told SPACE.com.

Reporters and the public

Of course, "big" presents pressures of its own. Among Curiosity's followers are a hungry pack of journalists and bloggers fighting to report news as soon as it is available. The craftier reporters also follow other accounts from the Mars rover team, such as Scott Maxwell's @marsroverdriverfeed.

The challenge for NASA is balancing the demand for speedy information with its desire to have spokespeople available to speak about the results. Other employees at NASA are often privy to sensitive data before its release and will allude to results on their Twitter feeds while saving the actual news for official agency announcements.

NASA has attracted criticism from some on Twitter for waiting until a press conference to release certain information. McGregor countered that it is a matter of making sure the right people are available to explain the results.

Employees are urged to "use the same rules every day that you use in your personal life" when trying to determine whether NASA would want to make an official announcement about a result, McGregor added.

"You don't find out your friend is going to propose to his girlfriend and then you post it on Facebook" before he actually proposes, McGregor said. "It's not your news."

If an employee's field of research or instrument contributes to a significant finding, she said, it should be up to that person to assist with breaking the news ? usually by lining up behind the podium at a NASA press conference.

And the NASA social team works to get out information as fast as possible during press conferences, she added. The Curiosity team usually sits in the room and broadcasts the information the instant it is mentioned. One recent example was the choice to name the landing site Bradbury Landing.

To aid in speed, McGregor said, at least one person on a spacecraft's social team must be authorized to tweet breaking news without higher approval. This saves the step of waiting for a supervisor to give the all-okay. In Curiosity's case, McGregor can approve her own tweets.

"Because I'm right there in the middle of everything, it makes it simple to work with this team and get those tweets out," she said.

Latest photos

NASA broadcasts some information outside of press conferences, such as uploading Curiosity's latest pictures to the mission website. Many people visit the sites several times daily, looking for uploads. In some cases, fans even have built computer scripts to scrape the new images as soon as they are available.

In recognition of this, Curiosity's social team will sometimes cull the best pictures as they are uploaded and mention them on the Twitter feed and Facebook page, McGregor said.

NASA has followed these social media procedures for previous missions. What makes Curiosity unique, though, is the reach and composition of its audience, which goes beyond the usual NASA fans.

For example, McGregor said, Curiosity's Facebook statistics show about 43 percent of the audience is female; in contrast, the followers of the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory page are about 34 percent female. (About 2 percent of the audience for each Facebook page does not report gender.)

NASA hopes to parlay this interest into offering career advice for students and women following the mission . This usually takes place in the form of answering questions about how to work for the agency.

"If we get more women who might be interested in a space mission," McGregor said,"they may also be interested in getting into a career in space."

Male birth control:stopping sperm with ultrasound examination ...

Among the 78 research projects to receive $100, 000 grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation earlier this week as part of the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative, is an effort by researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, to develop a non-invasive, reversible form of birth control for men using ultrasound.Based on preliminary trials in rats, researchers James Tsuruta and Paul Dayton hope to develop a technique that would render men temporarily infertile for up to six months after one or two ultrasound exposures.

The project is one of 10 to receive grants toward the goal of creating new technologies for contraception.Other projects geared toward men include a male contraceptive pill that researchers say would work by limiting the maturation of sperm, and research into the specific chemical compounds in the vagina that guide sperm to egg which researchers hope to recreate in the lab and potentially use to ? disrupt? sperm navigation en route to the egg.(Earlier this year, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco uncovered clues about how pH levels impact how sperm swim, and expressed hope that further research in this arena could yield possibilities for male contraception as well.)

In early trials, Tsuruta and Dayton at UNC were able to halt rats? sperm production for up to six months after giving the animals two blasts of ultrasound spaced by two days, the New Scientist reports. The researchers believe that ultrasound disrupts sperm production with a combination of heat and shaking, and plan to further explore the mechanism at work with the new funding.

Ultimately, the researchers hope to develop a contraceptive technique that could provide long-lasting yet reversible infertility for men.As Tsuruta told the BBC:

? We think this could provide men with up to six months of reliable, low-cost, non-hormonal contraception from a single round of treatment? Our long-term goal is to use ultrasound from therapeutic instruments that are commonly found in sports medicine or physical therapy clinics as an inexpensive, long-term, reversible male contraceptive suitable for use in developing to first world countries.?

DropSpace adds real Dropbox sync to Android

Dropbox offers a lovely client for Android, but it's lacking true "sync" functionality. You can merely browse your Dropbox, pull files into the device, and manually upload specific files.

DropSpace is a little Android app that makes Dropbox on Android work like Dropbox - that is, you get real folder synchronization in the background.

When you run the app you're prompted for your Dropbox credentials. After logging in to Dropbox, you get to select which device folders you'd like to sync to the cloud. It's a straightforward mapping process: You select a folder on the device, and then specify where in Dropbox it should go.

The interface is rather clunky, at least for now. The biggest annoyance is that you can't edit your "sync list": if you add a folder and then wish to remove it, you must delete the entire list of folders and start over.

In terms of functionality, it works quite well. I tested it with the camera folder, and it was nice to be able to take my photos using the lean default Camera app and have them sync up to the cloud instantly.

Sudan army clashes with rebels ahead of border talks

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Rebels clashed with Sudanese government forces in the oil-producing border state of South Kordofan, both sides said on Friday, just days before Sudan and South Sudan are set to resume talks on securing their disputed and volatile frontier.

South Sudan split away from Sudan last year under a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war, but the two have remained at odds over a range of issues and conflict has continued to plague their borderlands.

One of the most contentious issues has been Khartoum's accusation that Juba is supporting the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N) in South Kordofan and other insurgents. South Sudan denies the charge.

Fighters of the SPLM-N said in a statement they killed four enemy troops and captured equipment and ammunition during an attack on an army camp in the Rashad area in the state's northeast on Wednesday.

Sudan's armed force spokesman Al-Sawarmi Khalid confirmed the two sides had clashed in the state, but said the fighting broke out when rebels tried to attack a region called al-Murib.

"Their attempt failed," he said by phone.

Sudan and South Sudan are expected to resume talks over border security in Addis Ababa next week, after they were delayed because of the funeral for Ethiopia's former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

The two countries are expected to come under pressure from mediators to reach a partial deal on border security so that they can resume oil exports vital to both economies.

Landlocked South Sudan shut down its oil output in January in a row with Khartoum over how much it should pay to export through Sudan.

The two sides reached an interim agreement on fees this month but Sudan says it wants a security deal before crude flows resume.

South Sudan seceded after voting overwhelmingly for independence in a 2011 referendum. Some 2 million people died in the decades-long war between north and south Sudan.

How to save money on heating and cooling at your home ...

Do you need air conditioning repair in Northridge or heating and air conditioning service in CA? Heating and air conditioning use are the most responsible for the big chunk of our electric consumption. When your monthly bill goes up, it is most probably the doing of your heating or air conditioning systems. Based on studies, it is estimated that roughly two-thirds of a household?s annual energy use goes into heating or air conditioning consumption. During the winter season, understandably, the energy scales soar up and this activity is responsible for sending nearly four tons of greenhouse gases into the air each month. And what?s worst, as much as half of all the energy used in the home is wasted.

You can help the environment and cut down on your energy consumption by hiring contractors who can install energy saving HVAC units and make sure that your system is properly installed so as not to make it work harder in heating or cooling your home. In California, heat pumps make for a good alternative to high-end heaters that consume a lot of electricity. There are also a lot of companies who can offer air conditioning in Northridge and furnace in CA that are energy-efficient and save you a lot in your monthly bills.

Saving and cutting down on your heating and air conditiboning consumption is really something that you should definitely deal with starting at your home since it can save you a lot of money and at the same time you get to help save the environment. Here are some ways that you can achieve this goal without feeling too deprived of the comfort in your home. These techniques are pretty innovative and stylish, so soon you will discover that being frugal, efficient, and using less can be done in style.

First, we have water heating. When we heat water for maybe a warm bath or cooking, we don\\\?t realize that in an average American home, the third largest part of the budget for electricity goes to water heating. It accounts for 13% of your utility bill. Sounds quite a lot? Then do these steps that can help you cut your costs in water heating.

Obviously, you should use less hot water. If the weather?s not too cold, then just don?t heat water anymore when you take a shower. Second do not increase the thermostat on your water heater so that your shower will not need to generate more heat at higher temperatures. Third, if your water heater seems to be taking long in heating the water, better insulate your water heater, or buy a new, more efficient water heater. In order to insulate your heater, you will need blankets that should not cost more than $20 and will save you around 4-9% in heating costs.

When it comes to your air conditioning and cooling, always check your ducts for leaks, cracks, or breakages. These damages can cause your system to work twice as hard in generating cold and keeping your room cool. Remember to turn off the air conditioning unit when the room reaches a certain cold temperature and just use a fan to keep the room cool afterwards.
