Even though the colder weather is upon us, the kids can still go outdoors to play. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department has started a program designed to bring some extreme sports to local neighborhoods for youngsters to try out.
On Saturday, Mobile Recreation will visit Crocker Amazon Park in the Excelsior and Crocker-Amazon districts, bringing with it more than enough adventure to keep your kids ? and maybe you, too ? occupied for an afternoon.
Jim Wheeler, the recreation services manager, says he and his colleagues started the program as another way of bringing sports to kids in the community.
?Mobile Rec is designed to safely introduce extreme sports like rock climbing, BMX biking and skateboarding to kids in communities around the city,? Wheeler says. ?We wanted to be able to expose the youth of San Francisco to alternative activities.?
Each Saturday and Wednesday, organizers take the program?s sporting gear to a different rec center, park or playground. Depending on the location, they may also offer additional sports: For instance, when Mobile Rec sets up near Lake Merced, kayaking might be an option.
No matter which sports are on tap, the experience is free and open to the public.
Armed with a grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation and the San Francisco Parks Alliance, program organizers have supplied Mobile Rec with all the equipment that might be needed for each sport ? although if you have your own helmets or safety pads, it?s a good idea to bring them along.
The activities are staffed by the Recreation and Park Department and designed to be safe for even a newbie. On the 30-foot climbing wall, which features routes that are good for beginners as well as more challenging routes for advanced climbers, experts will be on hand to help guide each participant, help with technique and auto-belay safety lines.
For those who have always wanted to try out the twists and turns of BMX or skateboarding, Mobile Rec will have bikes and skateboards on hand, as well as mini ramps and some advice on improving tricks.
For younger sports enthusiasts, the program creates a safe learning zone, while more experienced, older kids can benefit from the chance to hone their skills, as well as learning the etiquette of ?dropping in? and how to help out and mentor a younger climber or skater.

Fitbit Flex hands-on at CES 2013 (video)
Fitbit's been in the fitness-tracking game for a while now, but today marks its first official entry into the wearable band space. Shown off here at CES 2013, the Flex is a wireless band much in the vein of Nike's Fuelband and Jawbone's rebooted Up. But while it shares many similarities with those existing products, there are a few very notable areas where it breaks apart from the pack-- namely, the inclusion of Bluetooth 4.0. Now, health nuts can wirelessly update their stats to an iPhone or limited selection of Android (!) devices via that standard without having to manually sync.
While it doesn't boast the Yves Behar design that Jawbone fancies, the Flex should prove to be a welcome accessory for fashion conscious consumers. To that end, it comes in five different colors -- navy, black, tangerine, slate and teal -- and features a thin strip of LEDs that can be activated by a simple tap. Those lights, five in total, each represent 20-percent towards a user's assigned goal, so current progress can be easily monitored. And, as you might expect, there's a vibration motor within the band to alert users based on settings made from the companion app.
The Flex is indeed a waterproof product and can be worn in the shower or even the swimming pool, though we wouldn't advise you take it diving. Despite this H20 resistance, the Flex won't track your butterfly strokes (or doggie paddles), but it will keep count of your steps, calories burned, sleep and distance walked.
Perhaps one of the most welcome innovations of this particular wearable is its ability to play friendly with Android -- specifically, the Samsung Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III. Users who purchase this band will be able to download that app from Google Play at the end of January. Further, there's one additional perk for Android users: the ability to tap-to-pair with NFC. In theory, this functionality should provide users with easy access to their stats, but we (in addition to the company's many reps) had significant trouble triggering the action on repeated occasions.
If you've been monitoring the fitness-tracking space, but have been holding out for a band that offers just a little extra, then it's worth considering the Flex. You can look for it to hit this spring for $100. Stay tuned for a video demo of the Flex in action.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch attempts to explain murky statutes revolving around found property versus stealing. After Bonnie Land found the expensive ring and agreed to return it weeks later, she was arrested. She subsequently sued the ring's owner for $66,500 alleging breach of contract as Land wasn't given the posted $3,000 reward money.

Comp plan details extreme sports site, community/rec center, indoor ...
When the new Comprehensive Plan for the City of Storm Lake debuts at a Jan. 9 public forum, it will include concepts designed to spur growth and recreation.
?We?re getting into the esoteric as well as the practical,? says City Manager Jim Patrick.
The plan will address the coming 20 years, with expectations that it will be updated every five years. The City is looking for public input before it finalizes the plan next spring.
Included in the 11-chapter document are mapped possibilities for a new indoor sports field, possibly even a dome, in an expansion of the Field of Dreams complex.
A Community Center is a prime focus of the plan. ?This is a very strong suggestion, it would be a great thing to have,? Patrick said. ?The plan does not set out an exact location. Renovating old South School remains a possibility, but so would building something new that would be more useable.?
The comp plan foresees a ?community/arts/cultural/recreation? multi-use center.
Several new parks are also suggested, including one to locate in the downtown area. A possible site could be the area of the current Sara Lee/Hillshire Brands feed mill, as the company is considering multiple possible locations to build a new mill, Patrick said. The proposal calls for a ring of townhouse/condo developments to face the park.
An ?East City Square? with parkland is proposed for the east part of town, and a new Seneca Park in the 10th-13th street areas.
The City has been considering possible uses for an old dredging spoil site, and the comp plan proposal suggests an extreme sports park for the site ? where ATVs, motocross motorcycles, BMX bikes, snowmobiles and cross-country skis could use trails.
An off-leash dog park is proposed for the areas behind the Storm Lake cemetery.
The comp plan proposes cross-town recreation trails to add to existing trails and a scheduled construction project adding a trail along North Lake Avenue.
The plan also details continued efforts to develop new housing, which has been identified as a pressing need in recent years, as population growth of about 10 percent a year has outstripped the available housing.
The proposed comp plan anticipates growth and development to the north and west edges of the City, with some potential for expansion to the south, Patrick says. A major focus would be to develop the Highway 7 corridor with natural resource areas, office space and retail stores. The King?s Pointe area is a key focus, where commerical development has yet to live up to expectations from the Project AWAYSIS planning seven years ago. The City is especially interested in bringing in restaurants and new stores to the area, Patrick said.
The plan?s vision includes changes to the traffic patterns and handling systems to slow vehicles down as they pass through Storm Lake, and increase options for pedestrians, runners and bikers. Capital improvement plans and continued replacement of aging infastructure are also addressed.
?This document is a lot of good reading ? basically it serves as a set of suggestions for where the City?s efforts should be focused in the years to come,? he added. ?The idea is that we need to pull the whole community together a little more, os that we can have everyone working side by side in the same direction. It?s going to take not just government, but all of us.?
The January 9 session at King?s Pointe is open to the public, and begins at 5:30 p.m.

APAgent Bob LaMonte has been a busy man in recent weeks.? And for good reason.? With plenty of coaching and executive clients who want to find jobs or upgrade those they have, LaMonte is spinning plenty of plates, while periodically focusing closely on one or two of them.
Much of his time last week was spent finding a new job for Andy Reid.? Ultimately, it worked, with a five-year deal that surely pays the former Eagles coach handsomely to run the show in Kansas City.
Next up, apparently, is the Big Show.? Otherwise known as Mike Holmgren, for coach of the Packers and Seahawks and most recently the surrogate owner of the Browns.? LaMonte methodically and consistently has been planting stories about Holmgren?s potential interest in coaching again, starting with the notion that Holmgren would be interested in coaching the Cowboys.
In fact, at one point Ed Werder of ESPN reported that Holmgren would return to coaching only with the Cowboys.
Since then, Holmgren has broadened his focus, saying that if anyone is interested, he?ll listen.
The Chargers, according to CBS, are now interested.? On the surface it makes plenty of sense in light of the fact that former Packers G.M. Ron Wolf, who hired Holmgren in Green Bay, is advising the Chargers in their search for a coach and a G.M.? But on closer inspection, it doesn?t make much sense at all.? Holmgren won?t come cheap; for what it would take to land him, the Chargers could have made a pre-emptive play for Reid.
Moreover, we can?t get out of our heads Werder?s report that, for Holmgren, it would be the Cowboys and only the Cowboys.? And so this idea that the Chargers are interested in Holmgren very well could be the equivalent of the report that the Cardinals were 95-percent sure to hire Reid, with the goal of flushing a bigger blue-starred bird out of the bushes.
