First ever family tree for all living birds reveals evolution and diversification

The world's first family tree linking all living bids and revealing when and where they evolved and diversified since dinosaurs walked the earth has been created by scientists from the University of Sheffield.

Experts used the family tree to map out where the almost 10,000 species of birds live to show where the most diversification has taken place in the world.

Researchers, from the University of Sheffield, Yale University, University of Tasmania and Simon Fraser University, say the creation of new species has speeded-up over the last 50 million years. Surprisingly, species formation is not faster in the species rich tropics, but was found to be faster in the Western Hemisphere compared to the Eastern Hemisphere as well as on islands.

As well as being the first time scientists have created a family tree for birds, it is hoped the research could help prioritise conservation efforts in a bid to save the most diverse species from extinction.

Dr Gavin Thomas, of the University of Sheffield's Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, said: "We have built the first ever family tree showing the evolutionary relationship among the species of birds. We used fossils and genetic data to estimate the ages of all the different branches of the bird tree so that we could assess how diversity has accumulated through time. Our work is indebted to researchers from museums and universities who have collected astounding amounts of genetic data from birds around the world."

Despite major steps forward in modern super computers it has still taken the researchers almost five years to analyse the millions of year's worth of fossil data, DNA, maths and maps, to create this never-before-snapshot of how the thousands of birds alive made it to where they are today.

To even enable the scientists to calculate which species were more or less diverse they had to create a new "species rate" measure.

Dr Thomas added: "Diversification is the net outcome of new species arising, called speciation, and existing species going extinct. We combined this data with existing data on the geographic ranges of all living bird species so that we could map diversification across the world.

"This 'phylogeny' is important because it is the first that includes all living birds. It means we can ask questions about biodiversity and evolution on a global scale and gain new insight into how diversity has changed over millions of years as well as understand those changes. More widely, one way in which the phylogeny can be used, and which may not be obvious, is in helping to prioritise conservation efforts.

"We can identify where species at greatest risk of extinction are on the tree and ask how much distinct evolutionary history they represent. Some species have many close relatives and represent a small amount of distinct evolutionary history whereas others have few close relatives and their loss would represent the disappearance of vast amounts of evolutionary history that could never be recovered. Environmental change has very likely affected diversification over time. Climate change could be a part of that through its effects on the extent of different types of habitat."

The paper ? titled 'The global diversity of birds in space and time' - is published in the journal Nature.

Improving Your Home One Tip At A Time! - Blog for Energy Saving ...

If you are new to home improvement, then you may feel overwhelmed. You may be at a loss as to where to begin. Home improvement can be more than a little overwhelming. Read on and learn some great tips to help you with your next home improvement project.

Keep in mind that the cheapest bid may not be the best. As you are getting estimates, take the time to research the different companies providing the bids carefully. Initially, the lowest bid may seem like a bargain, but you could wind up with more expenses because of low-quality work.

If you would like to make a simple home improvement to give it an updated look then go to the local store and pick up some paint. A fresh coat of paint can make a house feel brand new and requires minimal output in both cash and time. Getting a new coat of paint will make your home more appealing to potential buyers.

You can reduce the costs associated with a project by putting in cabinets without hardware in your kitchen. Thankfully, you can easily purchase cabinet handles, knobs and drawer pulls online or at a local hardware store. You can opt for vintage-look pulls, modern knobs, or designer accents that can be installed in minutes.

Proper planning ensures that your home improvement project will go more smoothly. Procrastinating until start day can be disastrous, as it can result in hasty decisions and bad judgments. Planning ahead will help the work go faster and will keep last minute costs to a minimum.

Some home improvement projects may seem a bit costly, but you?re actually saving money in the long run by tackling them. New, energy-efficient appliances reduce electricity usage. Roof repairs and improved insulation also saves energy bills. Do these things while keeping your finances in mind.

One of the most basic ways to update or freshen up your house is with a few coats of new paint, especially in a new color. A new paint coat makes everything look fresh. The effect of a fresh coat of paint in an exciting new shade simply cannot be underestimated.

Do not neglect regular maintenance of your septic tank. It is easy to purchase chemicals capable of hastening decomposition and which prevent overflows. Make sure that your home improvement projects do not incidentally mess up your septic tank. If you need to get a detailed plan of your house and be extremely carefully to avoid costly damages.

It doesn?t take a lot of time to clean your gutters, but it can make a big difference in the success of your home maintenance plan. Things like clogged gutters can cause water damage to the home. This can lead to wood rot. Maintaining your home and keeping the gutters clear is very important.

As has been shown in this article, making improvements to your home isn?t as daunting as it first seemed. Think about the money you can save, including money for expenses related to repair needs. There are also other benefits to home repair.

I?m currently publishing a collection of content articles about how energy saving light bulbs can help in saving the planet. Even using natural energy if you use LED bulbs then you will create much less carbon. My personal work on this subject is for magazines and on-line forums.

(AP) ? Actor Daniel Day-Lewis is donating papers belonging to his father, the poet Cecil Day-Lewis, to Oxford University.

The archive, which fills 54 boxes, includes early drafts of the poet's work, as well as letters from actor John Gielgud and famous literary figures such as W.H. Auden, Robert Graves and Philip Larkin.

Daniel Day-Lewis stars this year in the much-anticipated film "Lincoln," about the assassinated U.S. president. He and his sister, Tamasin, said Tuesday they are thrilled that their father's papers will be housed at Oxford's Bodleian Libraries and become accessible to students and researchers.

Cecil Day-Lewis, who studied classics and became poetry professor at Oxford, was appointed the U.K. poet laureate in 1968. He also wrote mystery novels and stories under the name of Nicholas Blake. He died in 1972.

That was a blast: Cruses walk-off HR leads Lady Bruins to softball ...

COLUMBUS ? Madison County went with the conservative approach to manufacture its first and only run in Saturday?s Class 4A softball state championship.

Northwest Whitfield was rewarded for being aggressive in response.

On the second pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning, Lady Bruins junior catcher Bayli Cruse launched a line drive to the deepest part of the field, straightaway center, but all that mattered was that the ball landed on the other side of the fence at the South Commons Softball Complex.

The walk-off, two-run home run gave the Lady Bruins a 2-1 win and the first fast-pitch softball state title in school history.

After seven scoreless innings from both sides, the Lady Red Raiders scored in the eighth, when the international tiebreaker ? which places the player who made the last out in the previous inning ? went into effect. Brianne Carr advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, then scored two batters later on Jessica Allen?s grounder to second baseman Karlie Henson.

Needing a score to avoid heading to a do-or-die second game in the double-elimination tournament, Northwest (35-3) could?ve used the same small-ball approach taken by Madison County (33-8). With Hannah Godfrey starting the inning on second, a successful sacrifice bunt would have moved her to third and anything but a strikeout or shallow popup most likely would have scored a run.

Instead, Cruse, the team?s top power hitter, was granted the chance to swing away.

?We talked about it,? Northwest coach Jason Brooker said. ?We had our Nos. 3, 4 and 5 coming up, and I kind of depend on one of them to get a hit. We talked about bunting and trying to bunt (Godfrey) in, but they?re a good team, and it would take a great bunt to get her in.

?I just kind of went with my gut. Bayli had been struggling, but the last time up she hit it hard to the center fielder.?

Cruse, who originally acted like she would bunt, connected as solid as she had all week with the fastball from Lady Red Raiders starting pitcher Randee Bettis.

?(Coach Brooker) said I wasn?t going to bunt no matter what,? Cruse said. ?I?ve had a rough tournament. I?ve had five (total hits) in the four games.?

But Cruse knew the state title was coming to Tunnel Hill the moment the ball left her bat, and so did all of her teammates.

?I stopped and watched it, which is not the thing to do,? Godfrey said, giving her perspective from second base. ?But I knew it was out.?

Junior first baseman Mallory Souther watched it from the dugout.

?Right when it hit off the bat, we knew it was gone,? she said. ?We were going crazy.?

Third baseman Mykeah Johnson, who was also standing in the dugout, did one better.

?Actually, I called it,? the senior said. ?Me and my teammate, Macy Weeks, were sitting, and I said, ?Watch her hit a walk-off home run right here.??

This was the second time Northwest, ranked No. 1 in the Ga.PrepCountry.Com Class 4A coaches poll, beat second-ranked Madison County in the state tournament and the third time the Lady Bruins topped the Lady Red Raiders this season. Coincidentally, all three wins were similar, and Northwest started and finished its 2012 campaign by beating the Region 8 champs.

The Lady Bruins won their first game of this season 7-6 in eight innings against Madison County in a game played at North Georgia College and State University. On Thursday, Northwest won 8-7 in eight innings in the tournament?s second round to move just two wins from a state title.

That win came after an 8-0 victory against Macon?s Rutland in the opening round of the tourney, and on Friday the Lady Bruins won 3-2 against West Laurens, which Madison County beat 2-1 in eight innings during Saturday morning?s consolation bracket final to earn a rematch with the Region 7 champs with the state title on the line.

?You have to give Northwest Whitfield credit,? Madison County coach Doug Kesler said. ?They?ve beaten us three times this year, and each time has been in extra innings by one run. ? We had our opportunities to win in all three games, but it did not go our way this year.?

Northwest finished third in Class 4A in 2009 and was fourth a year ago.

Two years ago, Madison County eliminated Northwest from the state playoffs just one round shy of Columbus. It?s the only time in the past four years the Lady Bruins did not make it to the state tournament, so going 3-for-3 against Madison County added something special to hoisting the trophy.

?We wanted to play them since the beginning,? said Emily Boyd, a senior who has been the team?s ace for four straight seasons. ?From coming so close and not getting it, and having to lose your last game, it?s so much better to win your last game.?

Boyd also played a major role in the Lady Bruins? win. She pitched all eight innings, allowed just five hits and struck out seven. She also walked one and had to deal with two Northwest errors as Madison County got runners on base in each inning except for the fifth and a runner to second in all but three innings.

However, the only time the Lady Red Raiders pushed a runner to third was in the eighth, because Boyd and her defense kept finding ways out of the jams.

?She battled the whole game,? Brooker said. ?She has heart. She had a blister on her thumb. Her dad (assistant coach Greg Boyd) was saying he wasn?t sure if she could make it if it went another game. She sucked it up.?

And Northwest?s offense was similar. The Lady Bruins had a runner reach second base in all but three innings and even had runners at second and third in the fourth when Boyd grounded out to shortstop for the third out. Bettis held Northwest to six hits in the game, with Cruse collecting two and Souther having the only extra-base hit aside from the winning home run.

Colbie Thomas, Godfrey and Macy Weeks each had one single.

?We were guessing too much for their pitching, trying to figure out if she would come inside or outside,? Boyd said. ?(Madison County hitters) were just trying to put it in play, not really swinging too hard. ? They did a good job of it, and we had to step up and play defense. When you get to this level, you will be fighting out of jams. It?s just the pitchers who can get out of them who are the ones who win.?

Historic event ? Just Cruisin 2

On Friday we didn?t post any events but
felt there was one worth mentioning in a
post. It isn?t often a dealership
celebrates 75 years in business.

Dahl Ford opened in 1937 in Davenport,
Iowa. Sunday, October, 28, 2012, Dahl
Ford will host a ?Caravan? starting at
the Old Car Home, 5215 Grand Avenue,
Davenport, Iowa beginning at 10 am.

The Old Car Home contains some of the
Dahl family collection of antiques,
classics, and hot rods.

We?re not sure of the route, but around
noon the Caravan will arrive at the Dahl
Ford dealership at 1310 East Kimberly
Road where they will host a classic car
show.

If you bring a car there will be prizes,
food, and music. It should be a dry,
cool day, and would be a good reason to
get out the ride and cruise.

The great thing about this show is you
don?t have to have a Ford to attend, all
makes and models are welcome.
Comments are always welcome.

Afton Water (Robert Burns)

Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.
Thou stock-dove, whose echo resounds thro' the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing, thy screaming forbear,
I charge you disturb not my slumbering fair.
How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighbouring hills,
Far mark'd with the courses of clear winding rills;
There daily I wander as noon rises high,
My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye.
How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where wild in the woodlands the primroses blow;
There oft, as mild Ev'ning sweeps over the lea,
The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.
Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides,
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As gathering sweet flowrets she stems thy clear wave.
Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,
Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

Wall St Week Ahead: Jobs data, election may overshadow earnings

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Earnings season may be only half over, but the focus on profits should subside next week as investors turn their attention to the coming election and Friday's jobs report, the last major data release before the November 6 contest.

More bellwether companies are scheduled to report results in what will be another "peak week" of the earnings season. Such a flurry of numbers normally holds Wall Street's attention and can lead to market swings. But volume and volatility may be slight next week, with market participants opting to remain on the sidelines ahead of the jobs data and the election.

The U.S. government's October jobs report will give a snapshot of the current labor market. It could also give a bit of a lift to President Barack Obama, should it come out better than anticipated, or help Republican candidate Mitt Romney - if it is worse than forecast.

Polls currently indicate that President Obama is a slight favorite to win on November 6, but the race will be tight. The most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely voters shows the president ahead - 47 percent to 46 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 1.5 percent this week, largely because of a spate of earnings disappointments. The Dow Jones industrial average slid 1.8 percent this week, and the Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.6 percent.

What's notable, however, is that rebounds have been brief and quick to attract sellers.

Some investors cited the approaching election as a barrier to committing new capital to the market.

"Not many people have the stomach to plop down their bets when polling is so close," said Hayes Miller, the Boston-based head of asset allocation in North America at Baring Asset Management. "For the most part, investors will wait and see what happens."

Miller, who helps oversee more than $50 billion in assets, said the trend of caution would be especially pronounced in the health care, financial and energy sectors - three areas that may face different regulatory outlooks, depending on the election's outcome.

"These are the ones really in play," he said.

Expectations for the next nonfarm payrolls report, set for release on Friday, are by no means certain, either. Analysts expect 124,000 jobs were added in October - up 10,000 from September. However, the unemployment rate is also seen ticking higher - to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent.

A payroll surprise in either direction could further cloud expectations for the election's outcome.

"A big change in payrolls could cause some uncertainty over the winner," said Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee, in Birmingham, Alabama. "I don't expect a big surprise, but while the S&P doesn't seem especially vulnerable at these levels, I don't think it is in a hurry to go up, either."

The market will also have to contend with the weather. Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the U.S. East Coast early in the week. New York City officials were considering closing down bus and subway lines next week.

At the New York Stock Exchange, the plans call for business as usual. The exchange issued a statement on Friday saying it has contingency plans to have the market running, adding that it has back-up power generation facilities. The Big Board will make accommodations for critical staff and traders.

Rival marketplace NASDAQ OMX said in a statement that it has plans to make sure its systems are ready. It will communicate with its members before, up to and after the storm.

EARNINGS IN PLAY, IF NOT IN FOCUS

While the market at large may be waiting on news events, individual stocks could still be volatile as earnings season grinds along. More than half of the S&P 500 components have reported results so far. Next week, though, will bring reports from some marquee names such as Dow components Chevron and Pfizer , as well as S&P 500 stalwarts Visa , Ford Motor and Starbucks.

This earnings season, a number of high-profile companies have missed estimates, including this week's sour notes from Apple Inc , United Technologies and DuPont .

With 54 percent of the S&P 500 companies having reported results so far, 62.5 percent have topped earnings expectations, under the 67 percent average over the past four quarters. Just 37 percent have topped revenue forecasts, well under the 55 percent over the past four quarters.

The earnings disappointments led to some intensive selling, driving the Dow industrials down 243.36 points on Tuesday alone.

The S&P 500 has ended down in five of the past seven trading sessions. Those declines have pushed the benchmark S&P under its 50-day moving average of around 1,434, leading some analysts to believe it may be ready for a bounce.

"We'll use any pullback as an opportunity to buy," said Chip Cobb, senior vice president at Bryn Mawr Trust Asset Management in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. "Even though we've seen a number of companies miss expectations and be overly cautious, we're focusing on how a majority have beaten."

Cobb said next week he was especially looking to results from U.S. Steel Corp . Its stock is down almost 20 percent so far this year.

"Steel companies have been participating really poorly, and I'm anxious to see if that will continue," he said.

Tips for Taking the Right Sports Supplements | Health Tips | Daily ...

Posted by jimmy | Posted in Nutrition & Supplement | Posted on 26-10-2012

When you are picking a sports supplement you need to be aware of your own goals first. You should also shop around and find products that have a good reputation and that contain ingredients you know are safe. We will help you with a few tips for finding a good sports supplement. When used correctly many sports supplements can prove effective in meeting your fitness goals.

You should always keep safety in mind when choosing sports supplements. Remember that products labeled as sports supplements aren?t strictly regulated and can make all kinds of claims about the benefits. Many of the ingredients found in certain products are not well tested, or have been shown to have side effects. The best policy is to be cautious and research any ingredients you?re not familiar with. If there are any issues about a particular product or ingredient, you should be able to find lots of information on it online. The bottom line is to verify everything for yourself, and also keep in mind any issues you might have in relation to various sports supplements, such as any allergies or health conditions.

Burning fat and losing weight is a common goal of people who work out, and some sports supplements can help you do this more efficiently. Exercising vigorously is the best way to lose weight, but there are supplements that can support your workouts and help you burn fat more quickly. You should go beyond the promotional material for such supplements and be sure that every ingredient used is high quality and safe. Some fat burning drugs have side effects, so you should look for products that are safe and all natural.

Ephedra, for example, is a stimulant that?s been associated with some health problems and is still used in some weight loss formulas (where it?s legal). If you see products that call themselves thermogenic, this just means that they help to increase your metabolism, which is necessary for weight loss.

Fish oil has received a lot of publicity as a supplement because of its fatty acid designation.

Tech CEOs trade barbs, warm up for holiday tablet wars

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The biggest names in consumer technology, stung by a string of disappointing quarterly results this month, are suiting up for what's shaping to be the fiercest holiday battle in years.

Investors and consumers have already largely written off flaccid quarterly numbers from tech behemoths like Microsoft, Apple, Google and Amazon. What counts is the next 60 days, when the biggest names in technology do battle at a near-unprecedented scale and pace.

Just on Thursday, Amazon compared its Kindle Fire with Apple's new iPad mini, point by point, in its earnings release, an unusual forum to name rivals. Apple CEO Tim Cook compared Microsoft's Surface tablet to an over-engineered car that can fly and float. And Microsoft went for the iPad, saying its Surface boasted twice its storage.

All three tablets will vie for the shrinking consumer dollar these holidays. By tech standards, it's getting ugly.

"The tablet space is where the growth is. That's why they are all fighting over it. PC shipments are down and some tablet buyers may never buy another PC," said Michael Allenson, strategic consulting director in the Technology and Telecom Research Group at Maritz Research.

"Last holiday season, we saw a lot of buying of tablets in the $200 to $300 price range. This year, the iPad mini and Amazon's Kindle Fires are targeted as large gifts. They are trying to ride that wave and win as much as they can."

The impending clash is far from decided.

Odds-on favorite Apple has lost some of its aura of invincibility, with Google's Android and Samsung making inroads into its reign in smartphones, Microsoft's quickening marketing blitz, and Amazon's Kindle nipping at its heels as the No. 2 tablet in the United States market.

That competition has weighed on Apple's share price, which is at three-month lows after it reported a second straight quarter of disappointing results, sullying its reputation for blowing away Wall Street estimates.

Google is struggling to figure out the dollars and cents of the mobile market and Microsoft is facing witheringly unimpressed reviews for its new Windows 8 platform and Surface tablet.

Meanwhile, Amazon's outlook for the holiday season is being taken as a disappointment, and Best Buy warned late Wednesday that sales and margins are falling.

CLAWS COME OUT

Tech companies hope lackluster calendar third-quarter results mean consumers have held off from buying gadgets so they can save up for something new and shiny this Christmas -- from the lowest-end Fire at $159 to a Surface around $499 or the biggest, fastest, newest iPad at $829.

The technology industry is grappling with a fundamental shift from deskbound computers or heavy laptops to sleek mobile devices like tablets, which are upending the traditional PC model and prompting companies like Google and Microsoft to invest deeply in hardware manufacturing.

Their entry however is raising the competitive stakes. Companies like Apple usually spend most of their time talking about how great their own products are, but with the competition more intense than ever, Apple CEO Cook spared a not-so-kind thought for Microsoft on Thursday.

"I haven't personally played with the Surface yet, but what we're reading about it, is that it's a fairly compromised, confusing product," he said, later adding "I suppose you could design a car that flies and floats, but I don't think it would do all of those things very well."

Cook may have been going for levity, but the Twitterati booed his joke, since after all most gadget-heads would be very content with a flying, floating car.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, for his part, was pretty impressed with the company's handiwork, notwithstanding reviews that used words like "disappointing" and "undercooked."

"We have a device that's uniquely good at being a tablet and a PC (with) no compromise on either one," Ballmer told Reuters Television ahead of the Windows 8 launch event in New York on Thursday. "Work. Play. Tablet. PC. Boom! One product."

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, in a talk this month, took a shot at Apple, which has faced a barrage of complaints about glitches in its mapping software since dumping Google's service from its iPhone.

"What Apple has learned is that maps are really hard. They really are hard," he said. "Apple should have kept with our maps."

Not to be outdone in the sniping, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos took a subtle swipe at Apple's high prices in the Internet retailer's quarterly results statement Thursday, saying "our approach is to work hard to charge less."

Right below those comments, Amazon listed head-to-head comparisons between its $299 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet, its $199 7-inch Kindle Fire HD device and Apple's iPad mini, which was unveiled on Tuesday.

Analysts were taken aback by how brazen Amazon was being in taking shots at peers.

"I have never seen them directly compare products in a results release like this, and in so much detail clearly calling out their competitors," said RJ Hottovy, an equity analyst at Morningstar. "This shows they are taking the tablet wars very seriously."

The Paleo Angel

Today we?re here with Kaleigh Laventure, author of The Paleo Angel, and our old friend George of Civilized Caveman.

This show is fun, but it also gets real.

The quest for perfect health (and a perfect body) isn?t always butterflies and fairy tales. Kaleigh?s story is a poignant example of how you can take a Paleo success story into dangerous waters?

I grew to love Paleo eating even when my weight loss stopped. I slept amazing. My skin started to glow, my teeth were whiter, I was at peace and a happier person in general and I adopted a LOVE for Paleo cooking and discovering and creating great meals that were truly nutritious and delicious?

Suddenly instead of being focused on my health and fitness goals (which were to be healthy, feel great via high energy, quality sleep, mental clarity and to get stronger and be a part of a program that will help me live a longer quality life),

I was focused on my body image.

George originally brought Kaleigh?s story to the masses in this extremely popular guest post at his blog Civilized Caveman. For you in the same boat, this will be a must-listen.

In today?s show, Kaleigh, George, and I cover:

  • The potentials dangers of intermittent fasting
  • Why LeanGains is not necessarily a healthy approach to nutrition or?lifestyle
  • How to address body image issues and eating disorders for both women and men
  • Why you should eat to optimize the way you feel, not the way you look

When I first invited George on The Fat-Burning Man Show, he convinced me to give his crock pot pulled pork a whirl. So I hopped on down to the farmers? market, grabbed a 4 pound pork shoulder, spiced it up, and threw it in the pot.

8 hours later, I had the best pulled pork of my life. Really.

I couldn?t keep this to myself.

Despite desperate pleas from his loyal listeners and fans, George?s schedule as a full-time Marine simply didn?t allow the time to write a book. But the world needs to taste George?s cooking, so I had to help. For the past few months, my team and I have compiled, designed, organized, and edited? Coke Ad Forces Ordinary Folks Into A 007 Foot Chase - Business ...

Coca-Cola

Coke Zero's "Skyfall" video

The new Coke Zero "Skyfall" video is yet another textbook case of how to create a successful viral ad.

It's a simple idea, followed by an incredibly complicated execution: How do ordinary people react if they're suddenly forced into a James Bond-style foot chase through a crowded European railway station?

The spot was created by viral masters Duval Guillaume Modem, best-known for their Belgian TNT effort earlier this year, which featured unsuspecting villagers who find themselves in the middle of gunfights, runaway ambulances, and lingerie-wearing women on motorcycles.

Following a similar formula for Coke, Duval Guillaume Modem set up digital vending machines in an Antwerp train station to offer travelers free tickets to the launch of "Skyfall."

There's just one catch: the free tickets are on platform 6, and the punters are given only 70 seconds to get there.

As they race across the station, the befuddled commuters find themselves confronted with just the sort of nonsense that crops up in the movies ? two guys carrying a plate glass window at just the wrong moment, a fruit vendor spilling an avalanche of oranges, and so on.

It turns out that the guys who take up the challenge handle the assignment with a fair amount of grace:

Rising payroll tax to weigh on economy

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

A tax break that?s added about $19 a week to many paychecks for the last two years looks like it?s going away in January. While most taxpayers may not notice the difference, it?s a good bet the economy will.

To help offset the income lost during the surge in unemployment following the 2007, Congress and the White House gave American households a small ?tax holiday? starting in 2011 and followed it up again this year.

While unemployment remains high, consumer spending has perked up strongly in the last few months. That extra spending power could take a big hit if, as now appears likely, the Obama administration?s payroll tax holiday expires at the end of this year.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

Enacted in 2010, the tax holiday was designed to help pull a stagnant economy out of the doldrums by?boosting consumer?spending, which accounts for roughly 70 percent of gross domestic product.

The money came from taxes paid to fund?Social Security, half of which is paid by employers and the other half?by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

That meant someone making the median income of about $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week.

Taxes go up next year, no matter who is president

The extra money diverted into consumers? pockets, though, is money that isn?t going to shore up the Social Security trust fund, which is already creaking under the actuarial weight of a large influx of aging baby boomers. With Congress already staring over the edge of a ?fiscal cliff? into a budget deficit abyss, the idea of underfunding Social Security has lost a lot of its appeal.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Technically, the tax cut hasn?t robbed money from Social Security. When the law was enacted, Congress agreed to reimburse Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

That has raised concerns that borrowing from Peter to pay Paul will only make it harder to get the trust fund back on a sound footing.

Are you still having mortgage trouble with your bank?

?Further extension of the payroll tax holiday would undermine confidence in Social Security and put at risk the program?s dedicated funding stream and the hard-earned benefits of millions of Americans and their families,? AARP CEO A. Barry Rand wrote in a letter to Congress and the White House Friday.

It?s also far from clear just how much good the tax cut did to revive the economy, and whether whatever stimulus it did provide is needed. Economists are divided on how much of that was spent, how much was saved and how much used to pay down debt.

Even if it did help boost spending, the tax holiday windfall pales in comparison to the money consumers have freed by paying down the mountain of debt they accumulated during the height of the borrowing binge of the 2000s.

At the start of the decade, American households spent about 17 percent of their disposable income to cover payments on a list of financial obligations tracked by the Federal Reserve, including mortgage and consumer debt, car leases, rent, homeowners' insurance, and property taxes. After peaking at 19 percent in 2007, that burden has fallen to 15.8 percent of disposable income.

Some of that drop is the result of a wave of credit card defaults and mortgage foreclosures. Some is from households? efforts to pay down debt. But a large measure of the debt relief has come from the Fed?s unprecedented effort to drive interest rates to the floor, which has sparked multiple waves of mortgage refinancing

Altogether, the cash freed up by the falling debt burden, thanks in part to the Fed?s low-rate policies, is roughly four times as much as the money diverted from the payroll tax holiday.

The savings from low interest rates on debt payments, of course, are offset by the lost interest on savings like money market funds. But the improvement in American household finances has undercut a major argument for extending the tax cut holiday for another year.

Still, lopping some $125 billion from consumer paychecks with what amounts to a tax hike won?t help the sluggish economy recover any faster, especially if the money is cut all at once. Based on estimates of how much flows directly into spending, ending the tax holiday would represent about a $100 billion hit to consumer spending, according to JPMorgan chief U.S. economist Michael Feroli.

?Even if the adjustment is spread out over the first two quarters of the year, which seems more consistent with past experience, the headwind to growth should be noticeable,? he wrote in a recent research note.?

Microsoft Touch Mouse gets promised Windows 8 support, works like a Charm

Microsoft Touch Mouse hands-on

Microsoft vowed that its Touch Mouse would get Windows 8 support in time for the software's big release day, and it's being very true to its word by posting the relevant update with less than a week to go. Mouse and Keyboard Center 2.0 saves time for those not graced with a touchscreen by introducing multi-touch swipes that bring up Windows 8's Charm bar, switch between active apps and invoke Semantic Zoom. Will the Touch Mouse update trick you into thinking you have a Surface? No, but it's certainly much easier on the wallet.

Roy Hibbert Does Gangnam Style in Mall (Video) - Rant Sports

Roy Hibbert October 2012

Pat Lovell-US Presswire

If you aren?t familiar with the song ?Gangnam Style,? you must have been living under a rock or something. The latest song by South Korean pop singer/rapper?Psy?has been going crazy for the past few months from all over the world.

It?s already the most viewed video on YouTube and people can?t get enough of the catchy tune. Many have already done their mock-ups of it, some who are celebrities and other who are athletes.

For?Indiana Pacers?center?Roy Hibbert, he decided to join in on it and he did it himself at a local mall in Indiana. It took him a while to get in to create suspense, as some Pacers fans started out doing it, maybe some who are part of Hibbert?s ?Area 55? fanbase.

When it was towards to building up to the chorus, Hibbert came in the most?suspenseful?way with his 7-2 frame, coming in with a white tuxedo and breaking it down for the public to enjoy that saw this performance coming out of nowhere.

It?s pretty fun to watch, though Hibbert wasn?t too great at it. He did look pretty stiff doing it and really couldn?t gel, but at least he did his part and gave people some enjoyment out of it. I know I did; it was pretty funny to watch.

Basically, we?ve seen the Pacers center just about everywhere now.

He?s been in MMA training places, he plays a role in?Parks & Recreation, he tries out to be?a member of Samcro or a One-Niner on Sons of Anarchy, he brings his fans to go see?Prometheus and now he does his own version of Gangnam Style in a mall.

Hibbert, you?re one of a kind.

Marijuana Legalization: Republican Support Growing, Legal Pot Is ...

conservatives support legalizing marijuana

Marijuana legalization backers are courting the support of conservatives in Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. Pot is not just an issue of concern for aging hippies and organic medicine proponents anymore. Cannabis activists have successfully lobbied some prominent conservative politicians to lend a hand with their cause.

Former presidential hopefuls Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson appear to agree that marijuana is a states? rights issue. Fiscal conservatives traditionally favor the power of governance to rest firmly in the hands of the people and local leaders as much as possible.

Colorado marijuana initiative (Amendment 64) volunteer Mark Slaugh had this to say about Republican and Libertarian support for the ballot issue:

?This is truly a nonpartisan issue. It?s fiscally prudent. It would be taxed, regulated, and monitored. It makes a lot of sense to Republicans.?

Tancredo referred to marijuana prohibition statutes as the enforcement of a nanny state mindset. Before attempting a bid at the presidency, the Republican politician was a congressman representing the Denver area.

Republican US Senate candidate Michael Baumgartner had this to say about Amendment 64 during an interview with the Associated Press:

?It?s taking a different approach to a very expensive drug war, and potentially a better approach. They?ve checked all the boxes as far as what you would want to see happen in terms of provisions to keep it away from children and limiting access in the public space. I?ve just been impressed with the initiative and the people running it.?

Oregon State Senate candidate Cliff Hutchison also supports pot legalization and noted such measures would cut wasteful government spending on corrections and reduce gang violence, according to CBS News. Wrapping the cannabis prohibition argument in a fiscally and personal responsibility banner appears to have even turned ultra-conservative Pat Robertson into a supporter.

Democratic governors in both Washington and Colorado opposed ending marijuana prohibition. Oregon?s governor, also a Democrat, has remained on the fence and not uttered an opinion on the matter publicly.

'Invisibility' could be a key to better electronics

Monday, October 15, 2012

A new approach that allows objects to become "invisible" has now been applied to an entirely different area: letting particles "hide" from passing electrons, which could lead to more efficient thermoelectric devices and new kinds of electronics.

The concept ? developed by MIT graduate student Bolin Liao, former postdoc Mona Zebarjadi (now an assistant professor at Rutgers University), research scientist Keivan Esfarjani, and mechanical engineering professor Gang Chen ? is described in a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Normally, electrons travel through a material in a way that is similar to the motion of electromagnetic waves, including light; their behavior can be described by wave equations. That led the MIT researchers to the idea of harnessing the cloaking mechanisms developed to shield objects from view ? but applying it to the movement of electrons, which is key to electronic and thermoelectric devices.

Previous work on cloaking objects from view has relied on so-called metamaterials made of artificial materials with unusual properties. The composite structures used for cloaking cause light beams to bend around an object and then meet on the other side, resuming their original path ? making the object appear invisible.

"We were inspired by this idea," says Chen, the Carl Richard Soderberg Professor of Power Engineering at MIT, who decided to study how it might apply to electrons instead of light. But in the new electron-cloaking material developed by Chen and his colleagues, the process is slightly different.

The MIT researchers modeled nanoparticles with a core of one material and a shell of another. But in this case, rather than bending around the object, the electrons do actually pass through the particles: Their paths are bent first one way, then back again, so they return to the same trajectory they began with.

In computer simulations, the concept appears to work, Liao says. Now, the team will try to build actual devices to see whether they perform as expected. "This was a first step, a theoretical proposal," Liao says. "We want to carry on further research on how to make some real devices out of this strategy."

While the initial concept was developed using particles embedded in a normal semiconductor substrate, the MIT researchers would like to see if the results can be replicated with other materials, such as two-dimensional sheets of graphene, which might offer interesting additional properties.

The MIT researchers' initial impetus was to optimize the materials used in thermoelectric devices, which produce an electrical current from a temperature gradient. Such devices require a combination of characteristics that are hard to obtain: high electrical conductivity (so the generated current can flow freely), but low thermal conductivity (to maintain a temperature gradient). But the two types of conductivity tend to coexist, so few materials offer these contradictory characteristics. The team's simulations show this electron-cloaking material could meet these requirements unusually well.

The simulations used particles a few nanometers in size, matching the wavelength of flowing electrons and improving the flow of electrons at particular energy levels by orders of magnitude compared to traditional doping strategies. This might lead to more efficient filters or sensors, the researchers say. As the components on computer chips get smaller, Chen says, "we have to come up with strategies to control electron transport," and this might be one useful approach.

The concept could also lead to a new kind of switches for electronic devices, Chen says. The switch could operate by toggling between transparent and opaque to electrons, thus turning a flow of them on and off. "We're really just at the beginning," he says. "We're not sure how far this is going to go yet, but there is some potential" for significant applications.

When youre interested in investing in any type of foreclosure homes, look for public listing foreclosures as well as repo houses to get an idea of whats available in a neighborhood that you want to live in or in an area you think may provide you with a solid resale profit.

Some of the rooms in a home you should pay special attention to are the ones that people traditionally focus on, like the bedrooms. It wasnt that long ago that if a bedroom was big enough for a bed, dresser and nightstand, that was all you really needed. However, if you are trying to keep pace with the way things are updated in todays world, you need to focus on the bedrooms for a different reason in the repo houses that you are looking at.

Modern requirements say that a 10? x 10? bedroom is the bare minimum. Remember that a master bedroom suite with a large walk-in closet and an attached bathroom is considered an absolute must feature, because it appeals to married people as well as those who are planning to have children.

When youre looking through public listing foreclosures as well, keep in mind that kitchens, living rooms, and family rooms are social gathering areas that have the best chance of resale when they are large, attractive and comfortable spaces.

You might even want to carefully inspect the laundry room in repo houses and visually survey the ceilings to look for any water damage or other stains, and observe the water pipe connections to the washing machine to make sure that everything is present and accounted for.

Start Up Businesses And Online Marketing | Content for Reprint

It is a rather unfortunate fact that today's businesses are facing one of the most difficult economic times in history. As a result of the historic double dip recession, a banking culture on the verge of collapse and the ever growing EU crisis businesses of all sizes and of all industries are now forced to do whatever it takes in order to survive.

Marketing has long since been the forefront of the commercial industry; a chance for businesses to expand their brand, grow their customer base and come out on top amongst their competitors; in short, marketing allows for longevity and ultimate survival. Naturally as technology and the internet are now the forefront of today's society; it is now online marketing that holds the key to success and why internet marketing consultants are constantly thrusting the terms search engine optimisation and pay per click at any and all business they come across.

In a world where over fifty per cent of the population now head directly to Google when in search of a product or service; it is only natural to state that a website is a must have tool however, as online marketing grows in popularity the internet is now a competitive arena and hence why many businesses are now choosing to undertake SEO strategies and PPC campaigns that, when implemented correctly can ensure the business achieves a desirable ranking position for profitable keywords. By ensuring a website and an overall online presence is fully optimised with the profitable industry keywords, todays businesses are improving their chances at achieving growth in an otherwise futile economy however if readily established businesses are only just embracing online marketing when should a new business jump on the bandwagon? The honest answer, is from the moment the business idea is born.

Between ten and five years ago, a website was a sufficient extra tool to aid business growth however, in todays growing society it is ultimately the difference between success and failure and thus why, any start up business of any size must have this in mind and be ready and willing to build an online footprint from word go. A strong website must be ready to target your online customers however, pretty designs aside it can only do so with the assistance of SEO.

Do not wait to face a struggle before implementing SEO; in fact for any start up business, SEO services should be considered from the moment of design conception. Images, layout, design, usability, loading time and content must all be created with SEO in mind in order create the ideal user experience and in effect the ideal, search perfect website. Whilst waiting for a website to launch, a company could begin establishing an online presence through external blogs, guest blogging and a social media presence on sites including Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn; these can be ideal to create a 'buzz' and now that social media sites play an ever important role in Google's search algorithm; there could not be a better place to begin.

A start up business is in effect bringing something new to the table and that is what SEO is all about; whatever your product or service may be, new or old, a start up will have a great deal more flexibility. The end goal of search engine optimisation is to increase the number of people arriving at a site and is a method that may not only work alone but alongside external marketing measures and with strong keyword targeting, site structure and content targeting, the potential to enhance growth is ready from the onset and in fact, gives a start up a far better chance than a current, long standing business.

SEO in a start up business is most definitely a foregone conclusion, if not to work alone and put the start up at an advantage but to work alongside external marketing measures. Do not get us wrong, the implementation of an SEO strategy is always difficult whether the business be they new or old however, no business should wait till they end up facing struggle before they take action; SEO can provide a real level of growth from the word go; why wait any longer?
